Here's a patch, based on reverting the patch that disabled this feature [1]. Tested to work with at least Gedit and Nautilus, but I haven't tried if any other apps might regress. I hope Ubuntu will decide to carry this if the GTK3 guys don't go back to previous behavior. Right now we have e.g.
