This might be a kernel issue and not just a problem with Ubuntu since
I've had this exact same issue on an HP Envy 13 i5 Kaby Lake running
ALC295 on pretty much every distro. Back when I'd dual boot, I used to
boot into Windows before booting back into Linux to fix this problem and
it worked on

I guess there is only one case where the current "fix" would help. If
someone had some library providing libungif in a different place, the
broken symlinks in /usr/lib might take precedence, thus hiding the
correct files.
In my opinion, removing the dangling symlinks is a slight improvement on

me (suspend/resume, Vart van Deenen's solution, "sudo alsa force-reload"
or anything else). The settings in control center/sound detects that the
headphones are plugged in, but sound comes out of them.

@msclectera, the problem is not in OpenVPN config files. The problem is
in NetworkManager (that does not store configs in .ovpn format and does
not support running update-resolv-conf.sh).
Most (if not all) of us are already using OpenVPN configs that include
up and down scripts, nevertheless
