May I suggest: turn off onboard graphic from the BIOS. Then change the
quiet splash in grub to nomodeset. It resolved the issue with my
nvidia driver, otherwise I had unreadable screen on my desktop. Hope

Keyboard layout changing shortcuts does not work for me on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
x64 with the latest updates when the screen is locked from the Unity session
(anyway it is done by the gnome-screensav).
I have installed Caffeine app, but it seems it has not changed any screensaver
parameters. And

GUI apps become broken, the visual image is attached.
For example, geary email app has empty GUI window and the following log:
