And it should be possible to turn off the subpixel rendering
alltogether.
I do not like "colored" characters and would prefer subpixel rendering
being off by default but at least an easy option to turn this off would
be great.

I have heard of gnome-tweak-tool, but I have also heard a lot of
warnings about it, which say that it shouldn't be used for Ubuntu. So
this is not a recommendation we could give to users.
