Re: Any objections against turning netbeans.org OFF?

2020-01-16 Thread antonio

Hi again,

We have 83 source code sample zip files [1] referenced from the
tutorials, with simple examples, that we may want to add.

Do we want to redo then under the Apache License? Request Oracle to
donate these as well?

Thanks,
Antonio

Re: Any objections against turning netbeans.org OFF?

2020-01-16 Thread antonio

Hi again,

Some tutorials (see [1] for an example) point to source code zips (no
ASF headers) hosted at netbeans.org. These are small zips that add value
to the tutorials.

I'll try to enumerate these files and try to salvage them. Maybe we want
to create a "samples" repository for hosting these?

Thanks,
Antonio

We already have a OSOUL service. Maybe we can upload the repository
there, and then redirect from bits.netbeans.org to that place (we're
already redirecting requests from Apache to Oracle infrastructure).

Cheers,

I would check that with Apache Infra whether something can be arranged
there. I have a feeling that archiving pre-ASF resources under the
old coordinates might be something that would be OK, as long as
they're not distributed via ASF infrastructure. Fairly sure similar
things must have happened before.

Best wishes,

Hi Lars,
As groupid org.netbeans on central is own by Apache, I ask Infra. Maybe there
is a solution to have maybe not and we can go to your plan.

I think you can forget about Maven Central. As far as I remember they require
that you can prove that you own the name used as Maven groupId (reversed). My
plan is to host them under the exact same Maven coordinates as used at the
moment, and that would mean that Maven Central is not an option since I
obviously do not own 'netbeans.org'
(org.netbeans prefix on groupId). So my plan is to publish to GitHub Packages.
Or somewhere else.

Salvage means downloading all the artefacts ?

Lars can you do that salvage? I'm not sure to catch them all.

I will ask sonatype for central.

If people outside Oracle would do this, that would be best and simplest (any
process or decision in Oracle takes time).

2020-01-16 Thread Jiří Kovalský

Hi Eric,

we have only manually migrated the most precious Wiki pages and as
far as I know there is nothing planned to bulk migrate everything. In my
opinion it is not even needed but if anyone would want to host the
snapshot of the wiki.netbeans.org, we can create a MySQL dump and
publish it somewhere for download together with all images/attachments.
Should be just a couple of GBs.

Best regards,

Hi Jirka
  Very late to the thread.

Is there a way to backup wiki.netbeans.org ? We migrate a few page, but I see
missing one linked from apidoc.

If I'm right, turning off netbeans.org will also remove the following:
  apidoc from 5.5 to 8.2
nexus for netbeans and visualvm (the maven artefacts from 5.5 to 8.2)
some documentation in platform.netbeans.org or some .netbeans.org

Best Regards

And the NETBEANS-3569 issue has been implemented.

In my opinion, the new NetBeans Plugin Portal 3.0 is ready to replace the old
one. I hope you agree Ernie.

I believe that until [NETBEANS-3569] is resolved, the portal is not
ready for general usage.

It's fine for creating the update center catalog, but not for user

It seems the plugin portal will stop working. Don't know if the new
plugin portal is a substitute.

Cheers,

Can we identify parts which still need to be migrated? Is

infrastructure hosting the legacy services?

Are there any Mercurial repositories [1] worth their backup before
we turn the servers off or we are ready?

If people outside Oracle would do this, that would be best and simplest
(any process or decision in Oracle takes time).

Re: Any objections against turning netbeans.org OFF?

2020-01-15 Thread Lars Bruun-Hansen
Hi Matthias

Sure. When suggesting to "salvage" the Maven artifacts from
bits.netbeans.org/maven2 I made it clear that the hosting couldn't be
affiliated with the ASF. But that doesn't prevent a community member
doing it on his own or some other organization doing it.

The old license [1] doesn't prevent redistribution, afaik. So I think
it would be perfectly legal to take a copy of those Maven artifacts
and host them somewhere else, while retaining the existing license.

Am I wrong? Let me know if I read the license correctly.

Also, before I start doing any such thing on my own it would be nice
to know if Oracle is contemplating the same, i.e. to make a copy into
e.g. GitHub, before they decommission all their old NetBeans Nexus
infra. It would save me - or some other volunteer - the work.

Thx

Lars

Re: Any objections against turning netbeans.org OFF?

2020-01-15 Thread Matthias Bläsing
Hi Lars,

I don't see a reasonable way to do what you describe. The code is
GPLv2+CDDL (to my knowledge), the content of the repositories owned by
Oracle. Only the donation files can be relicensed to ALv2 and thus are
eligable for integration/redistribution.

The message from the ASF to my understand is pretty clear: We will
_not_ distribute GPL (regardless of the classpath exception).

Greetings

Matthias

Re: Any objections against turning netbeans.org OFF?

2020-01-14 Thread Lars Bruun-Hansen
As the suggestion is phrased, "turn off netbeans.org", I cannot support it.

It has to be clearer. Will that TLD cease to exist? Or what exactly do
you mean by "turn off" ?

Summary:

Things to consider which are hosted (or redirected from) netbeans.org:

- NetBeans WWW (the page you arrive at when doing netbeans.org)
- NetBeans Maven. (i.e. bits.netbeans.org/maven2 -->
bits-adc.netbeans.org) - Sonatype Nexus Maven Repo.
- NetBeans downloads (netbeans.org/downloads), download of NetBeans
IDE up until v8.2
- NetBeans Wiki (wiki.netbeans.org)
- NetBeans API Docs
- NetBeans Plugin Portal
- NetBeans Mercurial (hg.netbeans.org)

(all of it legacy of course)

In particular for the legacy NetBeans Maven repo I think we as a
community have an OBLIGATION to make that available "forever", or at
least to place somewhere which (we think) won't go away anytime soon.
We need to salvage the artifacts and make them available somewhere
else. We cannot assume that Oracle will take on that resp. I'll be
happy to work on that. I understand it cannot be affiliated with the
Apache NetBeans project. GitHub can act as a Maven Repo so that may be
a simple solution. Bintray Jcenter is another.

But as people have mentioned there are also the other things on the
list above to consider, besides the Maven repo.

Suggestion for structured way forward:
Is the list above exhaustive?
If so, a Jira Ticker for each of them where we track decommissioning.
For some of them that may already exist. An overall Jira
"netbeans.org" ticket too which links to the individual tickets. Then
we work from that from that Jira plan.

my 2c.

Lars

RE: Any objections against turning netbeans.org OFF?

2020-01-14 Thread Eric Barboni

Eric

In my opinion, the new NetBeans Plugin Portal 3.0 is ready to replace the old

It still essential to keep bits.netbeans.org: it hosts older Maven
artifacts that are still required. If you want to create a Mavenized plugin
for VisualVM 1.4.x which is still based on NB platform 8.2 or 9.0, you need
to access the RELEASE82 and RELEASE90 artifacts. I recently faced this
issue.

Alternatively, we could move the artifacts to another repository.

For the plugin portal I would like to ensure, that the keys to the
client credentials for the OAuth infrastructure are accessible to the
PMC. Please see my email about that here:

https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/e53df0e59b362e342bfca064c9fdaab4ac922b681616eb8d0bbabeb8%40%3Cdev.netbeans.apache.org%3E

The donations are not done yet. If this does not hinder them, I see no
problem. One repository that is critical is nb-java-x. If I understood
correctly, that is the home of nbjavac.

That code is GPLv2-CPE and thus can't be hosted on apache
infrastructure. I have two ideas:

a) Oracle hosts it itself and/or migrates it to git and hosts it on
github

b) We form a new organisation on github and host it there

Both approaches will work, but we should do it before the repository
vanishes.

Greetings

Matthias

Yes, I agree with both suggestions i.e. not exposing the VM URL but
rather https://plugins.netbeans.org instead plus aligning the
decommission of Oracle hosting to 12.0 release date.

Thank you Antonio & Neil.

We may want to _also_ shut down "plugins.netbeans.org", and then make
"plugins.netbeans.org" point to
"http_S_://netbeans-vm.apache.org/pluginportal".

Keep in mind also the IDE links are not directly to

  and are different for
every release. Those redirects should probably bypass
plugins.netbeans.org completely in

It might be good to keep existing plugin infrastructure live until

2020-01-03 Thread antonio

Hi Jiri,

I don't think exposing the "netbeans-vm.apache.org/pluginportal" url is
a good idea (because it ties a service to a specific box).

We may want to _also_ shut down "plugins.netbeans.org", and then make
"plugins.netbeans.org" point to
"http_S_://netbeans-vm.apache.org/pluginportal".

That would require adding a new virtual host using puppet (Infra ticket
+ pull request) and should require no changes in the existing code/setup
in netbeans-vm.

Kind regards,
Antonio

Yes, the redirection will be taken care of since ASF already owns the
netbeans.org domain and it now forwards the traffic to the Oracle
servers. ASF will simply update the redirection rule to netbeans.apache.org.
