yes - the mail setup of the system was broken and the mails bounced

Sorry, that wasn't meant as a criticism of the portal itself or your work
on it. But it requires a process that doesn't seem to be working. When I
hear (off-list) that we have 30+ pending plugin verifications for NB15 a
week or so before we're scheduled to push a new release with a currently
empty plugin centre, it's hard to see how this process is working for us.

To turn this on its head, then, how would you suggest addressing this
problem within the existing portal? And what needs to be done by the rest
of us?

By "replace" incidentally I didn't mean replacing what the portal currently
does, but solely looking at what is needed to provide a catalog file to the
IDE. And make sure every committer can easily participate in verification.

And I still don't see why we're reverifying the same plugin versions for
each NetBeans version. We didn't do this until NB 13, and changing the
version scheme was not meant to create extra work for us or plugin authors.

Best wishes,

Neil

just say, that you or someone else wants admin priviledges. I have no
problem switching PMC members to admin status and thus giving them the
ability to create versions (and thus empty catalogs) and send
informations out.

As one of the people doing actually work on the portal, I get fed up by
people knowing "the right" way and don't do it. This comment is not so
much directed at you Neil, but more on the general tone of this debate,
which just plain makes me ignore these emails as the just annoy me.

Re: Sending NB16 notice to plugin authors (was: Re: [PLUGINS][RELEASES] Preparation for NetBeans 16 plugins)

2022-11-16 Thread Ernie Rael

Yeah, all true.

A release note on how easy it is to access the NB13 catalog might be
useful. I'd guess almost all the plugins still work. But maybe best to
just ignore it until there's a better story.

There were several tweaks to the current portal that have been mentioned
over several months, which seemed like they might offer a workable
solution without an entire replacement.

One thing I've long wondered is how the plugin portal relates to Apache
NetBeans. I don't recall ever having seen a VOTE relating to the portal.
(But I could easily have missed it; especially if it was long ago). Of
course there has to be something to vote on, not to mention the manpower
that puts the voting candidate together.

Technically, no, and I put that in place temporarily for the NB 14
release candidates. The problem is, the plugin centre was never ready
during NB14's lifetime, and that temporary change is still there!
https://github.com/apache/netbeans-website/blob/master/netbeans.apache.org/src/content/.htaccess#L31

It just opens up a whole bunch of other issues, including going back
on what was previously agreed upon, making shipping plugin updates a
problem, and generally not being transparent to users about what
they're receiving. All of which causes additional work for us too -
eg. out of date plugins leading to bug reports.

>From a release perspective, we have certain fixed dates where we need
things in place in the plugin portal. If the current portal and
process cannot meet those requirements, then we need to replace it.
But realistically that's not going to happen until NB17 at the
earliest.

The PR for this with a Screenshot can be found here:
