Reporter: Pierre Smits
Priority: Critical

Currently (all) defaults settings are retrieved from property files on
startup and used throughout all applications and components.
However in a multi-tenant environment this is to restrictive.
 Think of:
 - currency.uom.id.default
 - ORGANIZATION_PARTY
 - VISUAL_THEME
 - currency.decimal.format
 - currency.rounding.default
 - currency.scale.enabled
 - locale.properties.fallback
 - country.geo.id.default
 - defaultFromEmailAddress
 - mail.notifications.enabled
 , to name a few.
In a multi-tenant environment ideally these should be set at setup of the
company, and kept with the company and used throughout the applications.
Specifically the currency.uom.id.default and the country.geo.id.default are
 used frequently.

It appears that the citing of Drupal/WordPress/Magento solicited quite a

commentators would agree that theme developement in Ofbiz does require more
attention. The vast majority of threads on this ML focuss on backend
business rules and processes. That in itself is not a problem - if you
regard Ofbiz as a Framework only. It only means that, as far as frameworks
go, we need a better framework for theming as well. This will encourage
more participation from developers who have more of a front-end
orientation. I would support a drive towards better themeability in
2014. In this regard I would like to suggest that we take a look at the
VisualThemeResource entity which currently is currently poorly defined.

To be pragmatic, rather than working on new features, a new framework or

I have heard much complaints about this and I'd really like to 1st
replace as much as possible the Freemarker templates used in
 backend by widget forms.

I know already some cases where it's impossible, like the geo location.
But in most cases this should be possible and would much facilitate
designers work, when themes or such are needed.
Because we would then have a consistent HTML generation.
And in most cases even a better (consistent) UI, compare the old Price

 (still available at

Because it contained a new FTL template, I recently refused to commit a
working patch for Improve to allow purchase order ship

I though must say that I still want to finish pending new features
 (actually 2 new specialpurpose components)

 1) I expect to merge the seo branch soon
 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-5312.
I only see minor issues now, and anyway at some point you need to have
 your feet wet...

 2) And to finish the Solr integration
 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-5042.
I sill have to figure out how bad is the security issue. In a first step
adding a credential acces to the the Solr admin should
be enough. But yes underneath is not totally secured as is...

JIRA issue OFBIZ-5458 new branch request.

2014-01-07 Thread Pierre Smits
Hi all,

Would you please be so kind to create for each issue a new branch.

*Re OFBIZ-5458 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-5458*
This improvement issue deals with the aspect of retrieving default values
from the database and as a failover from .properties files. Currently there
are over 1200 elements in .properties files providing the default/failover
data values used throughout the system through the getPropertyValue
function in UtilProperties.java. Most are intended for a production
environment. In a multi tenant setup this is inadequate as these
default/failover data values can (and most likely will) differ per tenant.
As a result the function getPropertyValue in EntityUtilProperties.java was
created to first pull data values from the table SystemProperty and as a
failover pull from a .properties file through the earlier mentioned
function in UtilProperties.java.

Unfortunately, the usage of the function in the various apps/components is
sparingly applied and in several cases with a hard coded default value.
Correcting this is a huge undertaking that isn't resolved immediately as it
impacts various function (screen, form, groovy, ftl and java) and
(expected) data files.

As I am willing to undertake the endeavour to correct this and, I request a
new branch to separate these modifications from trunk. So that the
improvement can be assessed seperately, and when completed (and accepted)
migrated back to trunk.

Pierre Smits

We can't simply replace all calls to UtilProperties with calls to
EntityUtilProperties - because there are build dependency issues. Like I said
earlier, the current design is flawed, so let's fix the design and then the
related problems will be solved.

From my perspective, the correct way to provide this functionality is to have
the entity engine inject a location resolver or a ClassLoader implementation
in the base component. Using that approach, UtilProperties will get its values
from the entity engine without having to modify any code - the feature is
completely transparent to calling code, and we can eliminate
EntityUtilProperties altogether.

Thanks Pierre,

Your slightly modified patch is in trunk at revision: 1556166

I also added activemq (recently added) in the clean-downloads target

Then in r1556174
I fixed a long time pending minor issue when deleting downloaded jar files in
Windows (were not deleted). Using deleteonexit did the
trick (but saw later not for all), also added verbose to see which downloaded
jar files are deleted and uncommented the clean-downloads sub-target in the
clean-all target, and added a description to clean-ivy

About the not deleted jar, I found this link useful
http://raibledesigns.com/rd/entry/ant_won_t_delete_a

Last note: mysql was missing in clean-downloads target added at r1556185

Pierre Smits commented on OFBIZ-5458:
-

I did a quick assessment on how often UtilProperties.getPropertyValue and
EntityUtilProperties.getProperties.GetPropertyValues occured in the code.

A search on UtilProperties.getPropertyValue matched 595 times across all
components in apps, framework and specpo.
520 in .java files (more than 100 - I stopped counting - including hard coded
default value
72 in .groovy files (15 including hard coded default value)
3 in .xml files
This included also 61 EntityUtilProperties.getPropertyValue finds.

A search on EntityUtilProperties.GetPropertyValue revealed:
- in apps accounting, content, marketing, order, party, product and securityext
- in framework common, minilang, webapp and widget
- in specpo ebay, ecommerce and googlebase
- 34 finds had a hard coded default value
- 5 finds had no delegator reference

An earlier assessment on entries in .properties files revealed that there were
over 1200 property definitions (not counting those in locale variations in
specpo pos). But there might be more in other configuration files with
different file extensions.
So there might also be a mismatch between definitions and usage, indicating
deprecated properties.

[jira] [Commented] (OFBIZ-5464) Extend Ivy usage for easier external lib management

Jacques Le Roux commented on OFBIZ-5464:

Pierre,

This is quite a good idea, notably regarind security concerns I recently
expressed in dev ML. Due to possible jar dependencies maybe it will not be easy
for all libs. But we can begin with the simpler ones.

Now this would also introduce a drawback: it takes times to download libs, and
we have (roughly) 250+ of them for a total of 105MB... On the other hand, less
to checkout, then an ant target could download them *up to date* (part of the
build target seems a bit too much, maybe not, once in the Ivy cache it's not
too slow)

Reporter: Pierre Smits

Currently Apache Ivy is used to facilitate downloads of specific external jar
files for Activemq, mySQL, postgreSQL configuration and Sonar and Cobertura
 functions.
However, Apache Ivy can also be for easier management of the standard jars
 OFBiz is dependent on, in
 - various framework areas
 - various base and special purpose applications/components.
Applying more ivy functionality will decrease the load on commiters regarding
maintenance of (and upgrading) external jars used and required licence
 information.

Jacques,

We experienced the aspect of jar dependencies already in a testbed.

The download drawback seems (to me at least) moot. Whether including 105 MB in
a single zip or or in a subsequent download process it still remains 105 MB.

But for maintenance there are advantages, like no more deletion of old and
uploading of new jars to svn, or modifying licence and classpath references.
But also in a CI setup you could have automated tests against the defined
(specific) jar version and against latest (release or available).

Best is not to do this against trunk.

Applying more ivy functionality will decrease the load on commiters regarding
maintenance of (and upgrading) external jars used and required licence
 information.

[jira] [Comment Edited] (OFBIZ-5458) getSystemPropertyValue is never called/used

Pierre Smits edited comment on OFBIZ-5458 at 1/7/14 12:41 PM:

So there might also be a mismatch between definitions and usage, indicating
possible deprecated property definitions.

Mmm, not at all, thanks for checking.
Actually, apart the link fixing, it only replaced tabs by 2 spaces, no
functional changes

Currently Apache Ivy is used to facilitate downloads of specific external jar
files for Activemq, mySQL, postgreSQL configuration and Sonar and Cobertura
 functions.
However, Apache Ivy can also be for easier management of the standard jars
 OFBiz is dependent on, in
 - various framework areas
 - various base and special purpose applications/components.
Applying more ivy functionality will decrease the load on commiters regarding
maintenance of (and upgrading) external jars used and required licence

Pierre Smits commented on OFBIZ-5464:

The approach should be as follows:

1. determine whether there is a jar with the same version number that can be
integrated through the ivy functions.
1.a. if yes,
1.a.1 add config lines in build.xml for downloading the jar to its proper
location;
1.a.2 remove the existing jar file;
1.a.3 adjust the LICENCE, NOTICE and OPTIONAL_Libararies doc
1.b if not, Houston - we have a problem, then we have to choose what direction
to follow, namely,
1.b.1 leave exisiting jar as is, with its manual maintenance process
1.b.2.a try to get a minor upgraded version, or
1.b.2.b try to get a mayor upgraded version, or
1.b.2.d revert to an earlier mayor release version

2 Test, test and resolve
As there are many dependencies, we need to test thoroughly. Especially if we
are choosing directions 1.b.2.a, 1.b.2.b and 1.b2.c. If issues are found with
newer version, these need to be resolved.
Best way to do this testing and reporting thereof is in a CI environment, as
not only building must work, but also junit-test the available test definitions.

Jacques Le Roux commented on OFBIZ-5464:

I thought about 3 other possible drawbacks, if all libs would be downloaded by
Ivy:
* Needs an Internet connection (though initially checking out or downloading a
packaged release also, so I don't think a blocker)
* Sometimes (very rarely) with a new lib version you get compilation issues
* Rhaaa... a 3rd one I can't remember :D

This said, as I said earlier, we could use this mechanism for most off-centered
ones. And it could be a way to compare with our current versions and check
about security fixes if different..

Also Ivy is able to handle the dependencies once told and use Maven2 repo by
default: http://ant.apache.org/ivy/m2comparison.html (if you follow links there
you will get a lot to read, not done here yet...)

What issues did you cross with trunk, or is it only a warning?

And I did not know Ivy could generate (entries in?) a .classpath Eclipse file:

Pierre Smits commented on OFBIZ-5464:
-

Yes, the internet connection is required. But we are dealing with a web
solution with intended external connectivity. If used only internally (within
the firewalls) then there are limitations. But these can be overcome. (inhouse
repositories, dedicated access points, etc).

The aspect I spoke about earlier, had to do with unwanted dependency downloads
when resolving a module (jar) via Ivy. But also seeing that some of the modules
used in OFBiz being that old (or specific) that they aren't found in any
repository.

The compilation issue when using a different module than currently in trunk is
a serious one. Any uptake of an upgraded module (whether manually implemented
or automated through Ivy) must trigger a complete build and test sequence to
flesh out the kink before incorporation in trunk.

By the way, what did you mean by 'off-centered ones' as stated in your earlier
posting?

Extend Ivy usage for easier external lib management

 Key: OFBIZ-5464
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-5464
 Project: OFBiz
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: ALL COMPONENTS, framework
Affects Versions: SVN trunk
Reporter: Pierre Smits
 Attachments: jarfiles.txt

Currently Apache Ivy is used to facilitate downloads of specific external jar
files for Activemq, mySQL, postgreSQL configuration and Sonar and Cobertura
 functions.
However, Apache Ivy can also be for easier management of the standard jars
 OFBiz is dependent on, in
 - various framework areas
 - various base and special purpose applications/components.
Applying more ivy functionality will decrease the load on commiters regarding
maintenance of (and upgrading) external jars used and required licence
 information.
