Hi Michael;

That's pretty weird because I just built everything fine.

Try "svn update" and if you get errors report the revision number,

Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache Open Office Module

2013-01-24 Thread Donn Gilray
Hello,

I would like to help with the Apache project - if possible.

My name is Donn Gilray. I am retired from the United States Navy as a
nuclear power operator on submarines. I spent 20 years in the Navy, 12 on
operational submarines, and have collectively spent 7 years under water.

When I retired, I completed my degree in Accounting, a lifelong goal. I
started working for a property management company the day of my last class
as an undergrad. I went back to school and obtained a Masters in Accounting
as I fulfilled the requirements for taking the CPA exam in Texas.

I still work for the same employer - and am still an accountant. I started
messing with Excel more and more and soon was given projects by the
company's president. She knew what she wanted, but wasn't sure how to get
there. I created several tools that reduced weekly and monthly tasks to easy
to do jobs. One tool reduced a 4 day billing process for our clients down to
less than 30 minutes start to finish - and more accurate.

I have developed my skills in Excel and Word over the last 6 years and am
the go to guy for our company for most software solutions - using what we
have to solve day to day process challenges. I have recently started reading
about cognitive science research and personal productivity. I use VBA
extensively in my applications. I have limited the number of places we have
to enter new clients by using a VBA updating tool that refreshes our various
spreadsheets from a master file. It's not ERP, but it does reduce a lot of
keystrokes.

The reason I would like to join the Apache Project is that I feel I have
something unique to offer. I have seven children with various levels of
secondary education, but none of them are proficient at Office suite
products. I think a lot of that is because of the cost associated with
owning the software. I have been fortunate enough to obtain military
appreciation versions of the software, but it is not for commercial use.

Here are some goals I have concerning office suite type programs:

1. To have a training program - online or in person to guide new users how
to get the most of the open office products at a young age. The more
experience they gain with these tools, the more they will be able to offer
their employer. It is one thing to know the field in which they obtained a
degree, but it is another to do the day to day task of documenting financial
or research related projects. Having a background in office suite products
allows them to spend more time in their specialty rather than having to
create spreadsheet or word-processor solutions to organize their data.

2. Provide easy to digest documentation for the various products. Coming
from in the nuclear-powered navy, I understand the need for step by step
directions for segments of projects to move the project to completions.
Being able to follow and understand the basics lays a great foundation for
the user to create their own applications and usable spreadsheets, word
documents, and databases.

3. Basically contribute in any way I can - perhaps building my own skills in
the process.

Please let me help where you may need me.

Re: Hi

Hello Michael;

There are many interesting things to do with Java: we could use a general update
to the code to use generics (I think Eclipse has tools for that) and we have
stuff like
Lucene that I am pretty sure needs a review to see where we can use the new
features. hsqldb could also use some tender care: we even have code for
review that no one has looked at.

You could make a walkthrough SVN to see how the code is distributed and
have a try to build it in your platform. I am not going to lie: the code is big
and some parts are scary (hey it's C++ !) , but with patience you get to
understand enough to make a huge difference.

Pedro.

Hi Stuart,

We've migrated the wiki to a new server since 2010. It looks like it
might not have the server extensions needed to do that book export.
We can ask for it to be added, but we're currently just recovering
from a period of spam attacks and server instability, so there might
be some delay before we can get this to happen.

I don't have a particular module in mind and would like to know where is
the best place to start. Do I just pick something bugzilla? I am up for

The problem is not LibO, but the modified LibO version delivered by Fedora.
AOO and the official build of LibO can live together without problems.

But first of all, removing other's software is not a nice action...

That's depends on the distro: openSUSE and Mandriva makes those thing quite

hmmm...for some reason, I didn't think we needed a vote on this...oh
well, my mistake obviously

According to this plan think of the following release plan to vote,
make
the bits available, prepare announcements, prepare the download page
(update for new languages), ...

1. start vote on Jan 23th and inform infra about the planned release
2. provide the bits after the final vote on Jan. 26th, I will do that
late
on Saturday becasue I am traveling to he US
3. inform infra and SourceForge about the release and wait at least 24
hours for synchronizing the mirrors, I would say until Tuesday
(Tuesday is
always a good day for an announcement)
4. in the meantime prepare an announcement and have it in place for
Tuesday, Jan 29th

Tuesday next week is also good.
I should be able to assist with the website in the evening hours (CET).

5. the same for the adapted download page

@Kay, all:
Any need to test the additions in a test area? I've just changed the 8
new languages in "languages.js" to be available ("n" ---> "y"), added
download links to the "other.html" and also for the checksums webpage.

It might be nice to able to do a "live" test once the packs are at
SourceForge -- I can't tell by this when that might be -- late Sun?

So, I would suggest uploading revisions to /download/test just to make
sure.

OK, I'll make them available in test area as soon as I can see the
packages online - maybe already on Sunday.

Marcus

Ok, great -- I will keep my eyes open for this.

6. put the changes live and fire up the announcement, share the news
via
all channels
7. adapt the update mechansim to support the new languages

... and make sure to exclude "hu" as it's already available.

Marcus

8. start counting the downloads
9. being proud of a further release and thank our translation
volunteers

10. continue towards AOO 4.0
11. invite further translation volunteers, QA and developers to join
AOO
and make 4.0 a further success and available in more languages

Ok 10. and 11. will have some time and a lot of work is in front of us
but
it will happen ;-)

Sorry that I forgot the vote in time and we have to postpone the
release
until next week.

Juergen

A native speaker should check that all formula names keep the same
translation as before; so far these two strings have been discovered by
the user, but there might be more.

Hi Doug;

Welcome to Apache OpenOffice. The best first step would be to go to our
orientation page at: http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/index.html
and follow the steps outlined there. The first 2 levels will give you a
better understanding around how the project works. Then dive into level
3 which by the sounds for you would be Introduction to development.

This is not only where development discussion takes place, but also
where decisions are made.

Again Welcome and I look forward to seeing your contributions to AOO

Yes, I will definitely be in Bilbao unless something very serious happens. I
would love to meet you there and talk about collaboration between our
projects.

I can see two areas where we could start immediately without much talk:

1. test documents

Calligra has ~3500 test documents in ODF (odt, ods, odp), MS binary (doc, xls,
ppt) and MS xml (docx, xlsx, pptx) formats. I suppose that there is a test
suite available for AOO as well.

The documents that Calligra has access to are structured not only according to
format but also to feature, such as pictures, text formatting, graphics (smart
art, etc), and so on.

It would be great if we could work to create an even bigger and better
database of test documents which covers even more features.

2. Interoperability and ODF confomance.

It would be good if you could give a high priority to bugs which make
interoperability with other ODF suites such as Calligra. In Calligra we
already have a special bug category for ODF related bugs and these are always
treated with speed and priority.

What do you say?

Hi all,

this is a call for vote on releasing a minor respin of Apache OpenOffice
3.4.1 to support 8 new languages (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian Bokmal,
Polish, Korean, Basque, Asturian, Scottish Gaelic). The Hungarian
version is repackaged and a Hungarian dictionary is now included.

This release is a minor update to support further languages but no bug
fixes. We decided to keep the effort minimal and updated only the new
languages and no further minor bug fixes. It is the last minor update
including "incubating" in the name and we do that to integrate smoothly
in the naming scheme of the current release and to keep the download simple.

The source release for AOO 3.4.1 will be renewed and is based now on
revision 1435053 from branch AOO34. For our broad user base we built and
provide convenience binary packages on the same revision for all new
languages.

The source release candidate can be found under
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341srcrelease

The convenience binary full install sets for the new languages can be
found under

The convenience binary language packs for the new languages can be found
under
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341languagepacks

Please vote on releasing this respin package as a complement to our
already released Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 (incubating).

The vote starts now and will be open for 72 hours until:

Saturday, 26 January: 2013-01-26 10:00am UTC+1.

The vote of PMC members is binding but we invite all people to vote (non
binding) on this RC. We would like to provide a release that is
supported by the majority of our project members.

[Bug 121664] Wrong translation for Weekday Calc function in pt-BR

2013-01-24 Thread Ariel Constenla-Haile

Hi *,

If anyone knows if it's possible to use the formula name as defined in
ODF instead of the localized one, please comment on the bug.

If there is no solution, this bug deserves a pt-BR release with a fix.

May be there is some way of using the English names, at least when entering the
function in the function input line. I'm not sure if this is possible, I will
try to find someone in the know, on the development mailing list, and let you

Sorry for nitpicking. But should this be automated as part of the
install? maybe show a little dialog saying "we´ve detected that your
system is configured to use a piece of software that is incompatible
with AOO. Want the installer to automatically disable it so that AOO
can install? [Yes/No]"

The curse of the Linux world is the "tutorials" that tell users how to
do things by editing certain files, and installers that, having known
for years that such manual procedures are required, do not make the
slightest effort to automate the process.

It is fine to have multiple office installations, the point is that I
don't want to share the base layer anymore and keep it separately. No
URE, no base layer, everything consolidated.

Our friends from LO have reworked this already, but they kept the URE. I
am tending to go one step further and remove the URE layer in the office
as well. I think it was one of the first action Stephan did for LO ;-)
He had the advantage that he knew exactly what to do because he had to
integrate it on advice of his former manager.
