Actually the desktop-integration folder in the official DEB release contains a single file named e.g. openoffice4.1-debian-menus_4.1.5-9789_all.deb So appart from the very few people that use more than one version (and want to keep the menus pointing at a specific version) moving this single file to the parent folder seems to make sense... Those that do want to use several versions in parallel (advanced users) could always follow https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Run_OOo_versions_parallel#DEB_packages In any case, I agree with Matthias, the only way to increase OpenOffice visibility under Linux is to have a snap installer. We do have several possible desktop integrations (GNOME, KDE, etc), see the RPM Linux64 packages for example. This currently forces the Linux user to run 3 commands sudo dpkg -i *.deb cd desktop-integration sudo dpkg -i *.deb In the last command the user is actually supposed to install only the relevant package. Contents of this directory vary, so it might be that in some circumstances you only find one package there. IMHO it doesn't matter if it's binary or source. for listing it does not. But OpenOffice and LibreOffice are the only binaries in Gentoo's Repository. It is just a personal whish. Re: Open Office in Solus
Solus is a Linux system. Thus the downloadable version from our website should "work". However you have to check how Solus can handle rpm or dep packages. To integrate OpenOffice in the Solus repository it needs someone who does it. the minimum knowledge needed to create something that can be handled by Solus directly is: # create a package for solus distribution. # build open office or how you can repackage from deb / rpm to the package management system Solus uses. more advanced knowledge you need (depending how far the package should be integrated into the Solus repo: # understanding to create patch from trunc and add it to the Solus Version (advanced) # coding to fix bugs that are specific to Solus (very advanced) Alternatively instead of creating a Solus package snap seems to supported to. We currently do not look into it but it might be that we move to a modern generic Linux package in near to mid term future.
