Re: Open Office Writer
Hi, AOO can open .docx but cannot save in that format. LibreOffice can however. Basically, if you need to exchange documents in .docx, then stick to MS Office, that's the vendor lock-in policy. Beware, you're not subscribed to the list. You may miss other replies. Re: Open Office Writer UTTER , UTTER Rubbish (or not)
Apache OpenOffice does indeed have a perfectly functional spell checker. And, of course, we are aware of the problems for some users/systems with the spell checker on upgrades. We have recently had a patch submitted and tested to correct this problem. See the following BZ entry: https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126762 Hopefully, when 4.2 is released, the problem will be solved. Re: Open Office Writer UTTER , UTTER Rubbish (or not)
Darren, even a software developer (which you claim to be) may occasionally have to repair a software installation, and that can happen with MS products too. not just with OpenOffice. Deleting the Openoffice folder in AppData doesn't take long and isn't a pain. It's done in 10 seconds. And don't tell me you haven't got 10 seconds to spare! And: You DO NOT need to re-create the profile because it's done automatically when you re-start OpenOffice after you deleted or renamed the old user profile. You know, most people DO try to solve problems with their software (and usually succeed) instead of periodically insulting the developers for, as you allege, "inferior" software. You did this in 2014, you did it again in 2015, and you are doing it once again right now in 2016. I wonder about your actual purpose. Anyway, no one is forcing you to use OpenOffice. If you are interested in getting spellcheck to work, this method cures most problems with an inactive spellcheck. Delete or rename your OpenOffice user profile. As you are using Windows do this by: Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar (not the search engine) and press Enter. Delete or Rename the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice. This cures most spellcheck problems. If it's not working, the document language settings may need to be changed. OO must have access to a spelling dictionary for the language as specified in the document settings (look in the status bar below the main text area). This tutorial takes you through all that step by step: https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=16512 If you wish to migrate to MS Word that is your decision. -- Rory O'Farrell - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Layout question relating to screen size/open office writer
I used to have a smaller screen, and when I did the OpenOffice writer program would display the pages as centered in the middle of the grey space with the next page directly beneath the previous, sort of lined up in a collumn. Now that I have a larger screen it displays like this instead - not using the centre exactly, either a blank space at the side or two pages side by side. Is it possible to return the layout back to the previous one without changing screen sizes?
Re: Layout question relating to screen size/open office writer
I’m not sure what this discussion is about. It seems to concern the layout of a wide screen. You may try using what I have done in http://howard-cary-morris.host-ed.me/html_doc2.html It is set up to switch to two columns for a wide screen. The first pages on the left, the last pages on the right (not sure I like that, this is an early cut). You can look at all the code and copy it if you wish. Howard
