Osmosis uses densenode by default, but can optionally use node messages. I
know of no other implementations of a pbf file writer.

Actually, I'm not sure if the problem I'm having is the same as
others. Basically, no OSM data is displayed (or visible). When I drop
POI icons to the map, they shrink and disappear. The same thing
happens

Version 25081 does compile just fine in Debian lenny (hopefully oldstable
after next weekend) and squeeze (hopefully stable after next weekend). So
this looks like a Ubuntu only bug.
