your suspicions are correct, the objects with negative IDs come from
relations and at least in the case of a multipolygon relation it is
obvious that there can be more than one. Boundary relations will create
line and polygon objects, and route relations create line objects.

I just downloaded asia.osm.pbf and started the detour via .o5m (osmconvert,
osm2pgsql with o5m-parser). So far no error occurred.

If you look through osm.xml and its included files you will find layer
definitions. These have an on/off flag that you can use to disable layers
that you do not want to use.
