Hi,
Will this USGS project be worldwide? I have some of my original work from
Finland stored as local .osm files and I would like to see them to be in
the public domain some day.

In the case of US data sure, but other governments release data under

Eric, it's really neither accurate nor helpful to refer to OSM as being
licensed under OODB... ;)
I guess you intended to say ODbL instead of OODB, but even so, neither is

I'm sorry I created so much forking confusion. I used the forking term
originally because someone else referred to another forking project that
way. I used it the second time because Paul asked me a forking question
about the fork. You are correct in that we are not forking OSM because we
are not s

Eric, it's really neither accurate nor helpful to keep referring to
this independent USGS project as a fork of OSM. You are simply
starting afresh, from an empty database
The license issue makes it difficult to dedicate USGS resources for direct
contribution to OSM. Specifically, the data the USGS releases has to be
completely free from restrictions. The OODB license that OSM uses places
requirements on data consumers. There are people exploring shifting the USGS

Loading presets is the first API access Potlatch does, using the AMF API
which is mainly only used by Potlatch. It will be talking to

Folks,
An initial project has started at the USGS to explore using the OSM stack to
facilitate our data integration and, eventually, involve more user generated
content (i.e., give a home to The National Map Corps). The project is
currently titled the OpenStreetMap Collaborative Prototype (OSMCP).
