Vector file is needed to be able to select waypoints (decent waypoint
handling is something that P2 does that none of the other OSM editors -
with the exception of P1 - do).

On a Windows 7 laptop with SeaMonkey as the browser, with the browser at a
normal size to use I see nothing below sharpen.

The root cause of this is arguably the same as
 https://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/5208 - an over-long imagery list
full of antique maps that really aren't any use for everyday mapping (but,
as pnorman pointed out on that ticket, insisted on by people who like to
look at old maps) - but that's ticket 5208. This ticket is trying to say
if the imagery list is that long for whatever reason, truncate it, or
make it scrollable, or reorder it or something else so that the Vector
 File option is still accessible.

Comment (by Richard):

There's three possible ways you could solve this if you were so minded:

 1. Alter the TagGrid's raw input component to remove trailing spaces. This
would be the best but probably the hardest.
 2. Alter tagChanged in TagGrid.mxml. I ''think'' this should be relatively
easy and is probably the most realistic approach.
 3. Alter the serialisation logic when saving. This would be a bit hacky,
 please don't do this.

But you should be able to fix it fairly easily.

Its is possible to add an icon in potlatch to be used for campers?
Now it is only possible to use the icon for caravan parks, which is not
really correct. There is an offical logo/icon, see aire camping car
 (http://www.talentueux-sitra.com/CMS/documents/1769/sitra/32743.gif)
Adding this icon would be a great help for people like me travelling
around and looking for a place to park overnight.
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!!

 implement your instructions, if needed.

I am working on a MacBook Pro, running OS X, v10.9.4, using Potlatch2 for
OSM...but have hit a snag. I would like to add points to the map for
an academic medical center, but not every building is a hospital. The tag
 amenity=doctors works fine; just can't use amenity=hospital.

I have attached a suggested icon for the amenity. Please note it is the
Rod of Asclepius (single snake), which is the correct symbol, NOT the
Caduceus (double snake), which is not correct.

 Thanks very much - NMoore

The problem with this is that some backgrounds (Bing, OSSV, OS Locator)
are more useful and more up to date than others (7th series, the various
 NLS ones).

New users get no clue from the UI which backgrounds are likely to be a
good representation of what's there now (Bing) and which not (NLS Bart's
half-inch from when Queen Victoria was on the throne).

We've already had new user not realising antique map is rubbish issues
in Derbyshire with iD (which suffers from the same problem).

I did attempt (some time ago now) to get agreement on would be a sensible
list of backgrounds to offer to new editors (in iD) but got significant
pushback on the mailing lists (which might have been because Open
Historical Map uses a generic iD instance and the same imagery list) so
removing things from the generic imagery list is probably not an option.

That started out as part of
https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/1929 but then was spun off into
 https://github.com/osmlab/editor-imagery-index/issues/29 , which is now
closed; so is there a date available in the generic imagery list that
could be used to sort available layers by?

Comment (by Richard):

Unlike iD, P2 isn't the principal editor for new users (apart from the
minority of unlucky souls using IE) so I don't see that as a hugely
 significant issue.

If you can find useful, supported fields in http://osmlab.github.io
/editor-imagery-index/imagery.json (which is what P2 reads) then I'm open
to the list being sorted that way. I won't pretend it'd be a huge priority
for me, but someone else might want to do it, of course.

Thank you for the pointer, I found the turn restrictions editor in iD and
put in the information using the editor.

Caveat: Currently, it does not seem to support mandatory road signs (the
blue one with the white arrow going straight up), but only prohibition
signs can be expressed using the turn restrictions editor.

Unsure: I wondered the why the iD editor also changed numerous bus routes
going through that road crossing. But they are not affected by the
mandatory go straight on sign, since they all just go straight through the
crossing anyway, see the changeset number 23077652 here:

   https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/23077652

Otherwise, easy-to-use editor feature in iD..!

 Your changeset #23077652 created

 - hence relations that use that road have an extra way in them now.

Greetings, I have here a road crossing, for which I have received wrong
car driving directions using the navigation software ''OsmAnd'', which
uses the OSM map material and I would like to indicate on OpenStreetMap
the correct turn restriction. This whole issue is about indicating one
traffic sign, saying Go straight ahead, like this one:

   http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:France_road_sign_B21b.svg

I have read on the OSM wiki

   wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Restriction

that this would be a restriction of type ''only_straight_on'' and that I
have to select a ''from'' and a ''to'' way and that this is best done
using the Potlatch2 editor. The restriction information is attached to the
node, which constitutes the road crossing.

Unfortunately, it does not detect the second road involved in this road
 crossing.

I have attached a screen shot of the road crossing of interest, which also
depicts the traffic situation. You can see that it is a road going west to
 east.

 I would like to express:

 1) Allowed to go normally from east to west on ''Kierlinger Straße''

 2) Allowed to go normally from west to east on ''Kierlinger Straße''

 3) Allowed to go from east down south into the ''Karl Domaniggasse''

 4) But when you come from the west on the ''Kierlinger Straße'', you have
a road sign, ''only straight on'' to the east along ''Kierlinger Straße''.

There are no other road signs at this road crossing.

 == Steps to reproduce: ==

1.) Find the road crossing of interest. How to find it:

 * node ID: 293708029
 * geographic location: 48,3073607, 16,320522
 * intersection of ''Karl Domaniggasse'' and ''Kierlinger Straße'' in the
town of ''Klosterneuburg'', near Vienna, Austria, Europe.

I have attached the screenshot of the road crossing of interest.

 2.) Open Potlatch2 editor

 3.) select the above-mentioned node

4.) in the left editor pane, select ''Restrictions''.

 5.) select ''add new restriction''

6.) select ''only straight on'' (blue circle with white arrow pointing
 up/straight ahead).

7.) in the field ''from:'', it will not detect the ''Kierlinger Straße'',
but only show the ''Karl Domainggasse''.

I have attached a second screenshot from Potlatch2 at this stage.

 == Current: ==

Using Potlatch2, it does not find the second road, only one of them, the
''Karl Domaniggasse'', but the ''Kierlinger Straße'' is not listed and
 cannot be selected.

 == Expected: ==

Ability to select from: ''Kierlinger Straße'' (left map side/west side),
''only_straight_on'' to ''Kierlinger Straße'' (right map side/east side).

Meaning: When you come from the west on the ''Kierlinger Straße'', you see
a road sign saying, ''You must go straight ahead''.

If I could express that in Potlatch2, that would be great :-)

 Thanks and greetings,
 Ernst Rohlicek

Potlatch2 is really a smart tool for editing OSM. I tried iD, but the
workflow with that is much slower. So I really would appreciate to get
some small enhancements of Potlatch 2 and go on working with the
 outdated software.

My issue is about managing multipolygon-relations. When you draw a grid of
ways around different landuse-areas and assign the landuse-tags by
multipolygons, the select all members function helps a lot to check, if
a multipolygon ring is closed or maybe even has an erroneous split.

The way [http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/252236982] carries two mp-s: one
 landuse=residential, one landuse=farmland.

 The table shows:

 '''Relation ID Role'''

 multipolygon 1955526 outer

 multipolygon 2329226 outer

When you copy these two mp-s to a new way (like
[http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/252236984)] and want to keep only the
farmland-mp here, it's not easy to see which one is the right to delete.
In this example both even end with 26 so it would be nice to get an info
in the list (iD functions like this...):

 '''RelationID Role'''

 multipolygon farmland 1955526 outer

 multipolygon residential2329226 outer

As a hack I used to enter ref-tags for the multipolygons, e.g.

 '''RelationID Role'''

 multipolygon Felder 1955526 outer

 multipolygon Eurishofen 2329226 outer

This helps a lot if you want to pick the right mp at first look. But
unfortunately I got battled by an OSM-user who deleted all inappropriate
use of the ref tag. Maybe he's even right with this, although I think my
use of the ref-tag was quite something like a reference.

 So here's my proposal:

'''Please display the text of the following multipolygon's tags in the
 relations-list, if available.'''
''(by this order, name- and ref-tag already implemented)''
 1. name
 2. ref
 3. landuse
 4. natural
 5. note
 6. comment

 Thank you very much.

Because there is currently no city field in the basic editor for nodes
with addresses, there are many POIs without city. While it is trivial to
retrieve the city from the map, doing so when you're obtaining fields

[Potlatch-dev] [OpenStreetMap] #5016: Simple mode still uses deprecated power=* tags

2013-10-21 Thread OpenStreetMap
#5016: Simple mode still uses deprecated power=* tags
+
 Reporter: compdude| Owner: potlatch-dev@…
 Type: defect | Status: new
 Priority: minor | Milestone:
Component: potlatch2 |Version:
 Keywords: tagging, power, deprecated |
+
When you go edit power-related things in Simple mode, the tags it adds to
certain nodes and ways are ones that have been deprecated.

 * When you select Substation, it adds the tag {{{power=station}}} to the
 selected node or way. However,
 [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:power%3Dstation the wiki page for
power=station] says that tag has been deprecated since January 2013.
Change this so that the tag {{{power=substation}}} (not
{{{power=sub_station}}}, as that tag has been recently deprecated and
replaced with {{{power=substation}}}) is added instead when one selects
Substation from the menu. You can also add tags that denote the type of
substation, be it a transmission substation, distribution substation, or
converter substation (from AC to DC and vice versa). See the
 [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:power%3Dsubstation wiki page for
 power=substation] for more info.

 * When you are editing a {{{power=generator}}} node/way in Simple mode
there is a pull-down menu where you can select the power source. This uses
the tag {{{power_source=*}}}, which also appears to be deprecated because
 its [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:power_source wiki page]
redirects to the page for the {{{generator:source=*}}} tag. There is also
 a new {{{generator:method=*}}} tag, a {{{generator:output=*}}} tag, and a
{{{generator:type=*}}}. Please add these tags to the simple mode.

There are a few other things that, when selected, add the wrong tags to
 the selected way or node:
 * Selecting Transformer from the menu adds the {{{power=sub_station}}} tag
to the selected way/node. First of all, substations don't always have
transformers in them, so this is the wrong tag to be adding. Anyway, there
is a new tag specifically for transformers, which is
{{{power=transformer}}}, so please change this. Also, a transformer is
best mapped as a node rather than a way, so maybe make it so that this
option is only available when a node is selected.
 * The Power Plant (Station) option adds the tag {{{power=generator}}}.
There is now a tag called {{{power=plant}}} that can be used to map the
power plant as a whole. Many plants contain multiple generators; these are
best mapped as a node, so make it so you can add the power=generator tag
 only to nodes.
I know this is a lot of things to change, but I would really appreciate it
if you did change these things so that new users will stop using
 deprecated tags.

 Thanks in advance,
 Compdude

When you delete a node, that was not part of a way, and try to undo the
deletion the node acts like it is still deleted.

 Process:
 1) Delete a node that is not attached to a way.
 2) Click undo or the z key

 Notes:
If the delete/undo is the first action taken the save button is disabled
which seems to be the only indication that the node was not deleted,
without either saving and checking the changeset or refreshing the page.

Since this behaviour can only observed on nodes that are not a part of a
way I'm not sure if this is a duplicate or a similar bug regarding undo
 and ways.

 absolutely agree.

I was just trying to add our local doctor and found no icon. It would be
very helpful for everyone to see where the next doctor is located.
Labelling a doctor (who has opening/closing times) as a hospital isn't an
 option.

As pointed out by the poster above me, having different icons for doctors
 would be even better.

Comment (by z_p981876@…):

I agree with this - we should have symbols for doctors of the various
 disciplines in OSM.
Currently I'm mapping some places for the (German) project Wheelmap.org
(based on OSM), which provides a map for wheelchair drivers. They - like
other handicapped people - need to know where a doctor is and especially
whether it's the right doctor. Unfortunately the Wheelmap apps are not
very precise to set the proper position and OSM doesn't provide an
opportunity to correct the wrong values - so people can easily get misled.
Thus I propose to have doctor symbols for the most common disciplines
(general practitioner, internist, urologist, dentist, gynecologist,
orthopedist etc.) and therapists (physiotherapist, healer etc.)

It is common for ways to be inadvertently left untagged, especially when
several ways with the same tags are being added. Whilst these get detected
by Keep Right, it would be much better if easily detectable and common
 errors were detected when saving.

I suggest that untagged ways and nodes should be flagged up and prevent
 saving until fixed.

It would also be beneficial for other easily detectable things such as
place of worship with no name or religion, and amenity with no name, to be
flagged as warnings during the save, as a prompt to remind people to add
 them.

 Hello,

I know this can be considered a duplicate of tickets #3777 and #4879, but
I'd like to elaborate on this issue.

Despite members of relations now being rendered a little differently, I
still see some novice users breaking relations from time to time without
noticing it. They use Potlatch because it is easy and because they feel
they can skip a lot of technical reading. The visual language is a very
nice feature when understood but it is evidently not that obvious to some
users. A visual clue may indicate that something is different but it does
not indicate what the difference is.

I suggest a warning that the user may disable through a check box (and re-
enable in the Options dialog). The warning can briefly explain the
possible consequences of operating on relation members and provide a link
 for further reading.

An example dialog for deleting nodes or ways:

If you delete this element, one or more relations may become broken.
Relation membership can be managed in the Advanced tab. To learn more
 about relations, see: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation

 Proceed?

[ ] Don't show this again [Yes] [No]

And one for merging ways, shown only if necessary (not shown if all ways
are already members of the same relations, except relations with
 type=restriction):

If you merge these ways, one or more relations may become inconsistent.
Relation membership can be managed in the Advanced tab. To learn more
 about relations, see: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation

Potlatch2 web-based editor has frozen on me a number of times when I
accidentally hit the m key. Eventurally I worked out what was causing
the problem and I now also realise that M is a shortcut that I had not
been using. It ends my session without me being able to save any recent
work. I have repeated the exercise deliberately and I am able to re-create
the problem any time by hitting the m key while editing.

I am using Linux Mint Debian Edition with all up-to-date fixes etc any I
 am using Mozilla Firefox 19.0

I am having no problems with my system generally except that I have not
used Chromium browser because it reports an Adobe Flash error that I have
not been able to rectify .. nor really bothered because Firefox is so

This is intentional behaviour. On save, P2 strips a very small number of
tags which are no longer used by the OSM community and now serve only to
bloat the database (particularly some associated with the TIGER import).
Other editors do the same. See

If an entity is selected when you save in Potlatch, some of its attributes
 are deleted.

 To reproduce:
 * Open Potlatch2 on a section of map
 * Highlight a road and make a modification to it (e.g. remove its
tiger:reviewed=no attribute, or change its highway value)
 * While the road is still selected, press 's' to save

The save occurs, but several of the road's attributes disappear. I have
verified that this happens even if multiple ways are selected, and if the
'save' button is clicked (rather than pressing 's'). If after this occurs
to a way, the way is modified and saved again, additional attributes
 disappear.

Thinking it might have been a weird synch issue with Potlatch, I closed
the changeset and reloaded Potlatch2, but the behaviour persisted.

I'm attaching before-and-after screenshots to show the behaviour. Between
taking the before and taking the after, the only thing I did was press
's' to save. Unless I'm completely misdiagnosing this, it is a fairly
critical bug as it causes deletion of data. (Even if I'm misdiagnosing
it, *something* is causing the deletion of data, and that's a problem.) A
temporary workaround seems to be to make sure nothing is selected when you
click 'save' or press 's', but it could just be that something is getting
deleted and I'm not seeing it.

I'm running on Firefox 20, on Ubuntu 12.10, on iMac hardware.

I have vision problems and have trouble reading small text.

When I click the edit button at the top of the screen, the P2 editor
opens. There is a window over the map with a blue border and some tabs
inside at the top. All of the text is far too small to read. I can make
out Getting Started in the middle of the text, but that is it. I clicked
a button to dismiss it. I hope it wasn't important.

I expected the text to be larger so that people with vision problems can
read it. At least respect the font size I have set in my browser
preferences (set large so I can read web pages).

Comment (by Richard):

Potlatch 2 is unable to read your browser font preference - it's a Flash
application. You could try using iD which is JavaScript/HTML and will
therefore respond to your browser font settings.

What it doesn't do is support entities that are *just* addresses, like
 private residences.

Incidentally, the address tab also seems to be applied pretty haphazardly.
Very few of the amenity types support it. Examples without it: policy
station, fire station, library, hospital, place of worship...

Nested Relations (like most Public-Transport-Routes should be) are not
displayed in the Relation-List of the Relation-Editor.

 Exact steps to reproduce:
 * Find a Way wich is in a nested Relation (like

 that highway])
 * Double Click the Bus-Route to open the Relation-Editor
 * Click Advanced and double click it's parent relation (route_master
 bus in this example)
 * Click Advanced again for this one. Notice that there is no Parent-
 Relation listed
 * Double Click the Relation-ID and choose More Details... to confirm
that this Relation actually ''is'' a Member of another Relation

Every few weeks I find a destroyed multipolygon relation in my mapping
area, of which segements are deleted so that mapnik cannot render them
anymore. The associated editor is always potlach2. And the responsible
mappers are always unaware of the damage they do. This is because potlach2
doesn't make clear enough that a way is part of a multipolygon relation
and doesn't give proper warnings when a multipolygon is invalidated. JOSM
for instance performs a validity check when uploading.

Please include clear warnings in potlach2 to alert mappers if they are
about to invalidate a multipolygon or show it much clearer if a way's role
is to be part of a multipolygon.

 Thank you!

Tickets on this website are to report problems with the software, not with
the map data. The correct way to report problems with the map is clicking
'Add note' at the bottom of the map, or you can ''edit the map yourself''.

I was going to try fixing it for you, but you didn't say what the current
wrong location is, so I can't find it.

I've now had to talk to several Potlatch users who deleted or altered map
features because they couldn't understand that thin black lines could be
part of multipolygons. For example, this is a beach and it is correctly
represented in both JOSM and Mapnik's default style:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/2884813

Same thing with this park's perimeter:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/2745520

Most problems I've had so far were district boundaries getting deleted
because the user thought they were not roads. I minimized this effect by
adding boundary tags, which are not required in neither JOSM nor Mapnik
and also not according to the multipolygon logic described in the wiki. I
did it solely to work around Potlatch's display logic. Beaches are nodes
or areas but never ways, so there are no workarounds for this case, as
 with many others.

Maybe the users were not so smart, but I think Potlatch, being used mostly
by casual users and newcomers, should avoid misguiding users.

Comment (by colin.smale@…):

It would be great if the GPS traces could be limited to the last X months
as well. This would be especially beneficial where roads etc have been
realigned. Sometimes you get millions of traces and you can't see the
difference between a new trace with an offset north of 10m and an old
trace with an offset south of 10m (for example). Only displaying recent
traces would put the recent traces clearly in the majority allow you to
estimate the desired track better in line with the current situation.

Really anything beginner-focused (like this) is out of scope for Potlatch

Potlatch2 allows and encourages (by showing an active save button) to
 save empty changesets.

 steps to reproduce:
 1. create a new node by double clicking
 2. delete the node
 or
 1. start a way by single clicking into the map.
 2. hit + on keyboard to add tags, enter key and value, finish with enter.
 plus
 3. save is active although nothing will be saved. The sent changeset
contains only changeset-related tags but no nodes or ways or whatever.

It can be confusing ( e.g. see
 https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/19996/bearbeitungen-erscheinen-
nicht-in-der-liste-meiner-anderungen ) that something is claimed to be
saved although in reality nothing is saved - just a changeset is opened.

Possible solution: the Save button should not be active if there would be
nothing in the changeset after clicking the save button.

 http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/ (ngi-aerial) has 50cm aerial imagery
for all of South Africa. The imagery more consistent and on the whole has
better positional accuracy than Bing aerial.

It would be great if PL2 used ngi-aerial as the default background later
for South African instead of Bing.

 Happy to help.

I expected to find the !OpenStreetInfo style listed among the choices, but
I got the same 5 choices as before.

Similarly, I'm unable to delete choices from this menu.

I had to kill Firefox and terminate the Flash process in the Task Manager.

Some new users in my area have insisted on using landuse=forest instead of
natural=wood because only the former has a preset. (It doesn’t help that
only landuse=forest is rendered with little tree icons in the Mapnik
stylesheet.) I’d really appreciate a preset for natural=wood. Renaming the
landuse=forest preset also sounds like a good idea.

When looking at a route of the numbered node network. 20- or -41 is shown
when the route is not loaded completely. What's worse is that sometimes
those numbers are of a different network. (When the same node has both
 rwn_ref and rcn_ref).

There is a simple solution: use the note tag for these routes (10 000 and
increasing). It contains the correct information. I know this because I'm
 checking them regularly.

Contributors keep adding name and ref tags with that same information, so
it would show up in Potlatch and I keep having to remove those tags. When
it has a ref and network=rcn it's a route that does not belong to the
 numbered node network.

Since these routes are unnamed, they don't get name tags.

Please fix this properly for once and for all, your users are suffering
 from it.

I don't know that it's directly related, but if I do manage to select a
way with a bus route relation then the new direction information shown in
the simple panel is wrong anyway (show correctly in the advanced panel).
It always shows the direction as 'forwards' even for routes which are
'backwards' or bi-directional. If I select the direction drop-down and try
to change it then again it freezes up.

Neither P2 nor even flash have any responsibility for how HTTP requests

If I select any route of any size, which has a bus route relation then
nothing happens, Potlach stops responding to input and Opera eventually
decides that flash has crashed, in fact it just appears to be unresponsive
for at least two minutes. I can select and edit any other node or way
 without issue.

Only in the last week has this issue manifested when editing from the
openstreetmap.org site. I can be reasonably precise about the timing as I
spent the week before this adding and editing bus route relations along
ways in the city of Derby, UK.

It seems to be browser independent (Firefox, Konqueror, Webkit all tested)
and the version of flash being used hasn't changed that I'm aware of. I
tried the last point release of flash (11.2.202.235) with the same
 results.

I've tried deleting all local flash storage and configs to no avail.

Comment (by Porfino):

I would highly appreciate this too.
You can add a battlefield but no doctors.

There should also be a symbol for psychotherapist/psychiatrist i think.
But one symbol would be fine for me too.

I think that this would be a useful option to inculde location of
surgeries and clinics on the map.

 For example
 choice value=both text=Both description=There is a sidewalk on both
 sides of the road. match=yes/

Should match both yes and both, even so yes is not mentioned in the
 match statement.

The following does work by using the pipe symbol:
 choice value=both text=Both description=There is a sidewalk on both
 sides of the road. match=both|yes/

There's no conceivable reason for the value to not be included in the
 match automatically.

The lanes field shows the value 1 if the value is unset, with non-
obvious unset text to the right.

This isn't very obvious. It looks at first glance as though somebody has
added the value as 1 rather than that it is unset. It is easy to miss
the unset text, especially on a default 1024x768 resolution screen where
it goes off the edge of the panel requiring the user to scroll across to
 see it (see attachment).

It would be much better as something similar to the drop-down menus, which
are clearly unset until they are set with a value.
