I'm neutral about inclusion of the clear text challenge/response. After all, if a user has the ability to set an environment variable, then he can equally set _JAVA_OPTION `-Djavax.net.debug=all` and get the deciphered wire bytes which will reveal the same information. If he cares, he should use SCRAM-SHA :). This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service. To respond to the message, please log on GitHub and use the URL above to go to the specific comment. Given that protocol tracing should only be on in development/debugging situations I really don't see it as a problem (though I'd also be fine if the challenge/response parts are masked off by default... normally the things you want to see are the sasl mechanisms offered/selected and where (if) the exchange has hung). It would be more consistent with proton-c to do it, and it is a very specific trace level tool few should use without expecting such detail, which is only showing detail that can be viewed in other ways already..but it may as you say be surprising that it starts happening from proton-j after all these years. Having a separate flag for it seems both reasonable in that regard, and annoying+inconsistent. Rock, hard place :) This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service. Also I'm wondering is we want to default the not logging SASL frames unless configured to as it does expose that data where it was not doing so before which could be surprising to some. It probably isn't a huge deal as the bytes can be seen anyway and possibly logged by other frameworks... I guess proton-c just logs all of it now so being consistent isn't a terrible thing. Given that the ProtocolTracer adds new methods to convey SASL details, and the non-tracer output specifically handles SASL output separately to begin with, I think the original bits are probably best left as is and simple addition made for the SASL bits (e.g a new package private transport log method). SASL frames also dont have a channel or payload so in this case a TransportFrame object is always just being used to carry the performative as the only detail, so the new ProtocolTracer methods could just pass that. Could you comment on the approach? If it is acceptable, I'll add some tests. One unsettled question in my mind ProtocolTracer: at the moment, ProtocolTracer implementations don't receive SaslFrameBodies. I did as this would break ProtocolTracer impls (including QpidJMS's - which would ClassCastException). I wondered using a default method ProtocolTracer#ignoreSaslFrameBody which would return true.
