Re: Proposed table of contents for Royale help documentation

2018-01-23 Thread Alex Harui
Personally, I would be very cautious about WP themes or copying
look-and-feel of other sites. I would like our doc to be license-able
under ALv2 and not run into IP and licensing issues.

Re: Royale Static ASDoc

2018-01-23 Thread Carlos Rovira
Without doubt "routing", so getting a library that make royale search
friendly is the most important task there.
That's one of the things that people will need. My way of thinking is
always order by order of priority.
So routing is one of the key things all tech need to have in order to be
considered by our users

thanks

Re: Proposed table of contents for Royale help documentation

2018-01-23 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi,

I tried to read through this thread, but many mails to catch all whats
happening at the moment, and just want to say a couple of things:

1.- Regarding TOC, I think it's ok (in a quick review, I should work a bit
on docs too to see how this works). But as anything, I assume that it's a
starting point and we should be working on it a evolving it as we
experience it.

2.- Although Flex doc is a good start I want to point as well to React[1]
and Angular[2] to compare with what we want to do to get/copy ideas on how
they are doing things and help to get same level of quality and/or even
improve over it. I use to always reference this two projects since are the
standard right now in any aspect and we should compare what we do with
those.

React seems to use Github pages as well and the index/menu systems seems
very appropriate.

3.- I think we should use that kind of layout and not try to "emulate" the
exact look and feel in our site. I think that would not result in something
cool in the end. To do that I'll go directly the most easy way that is to
do it in WP instance in no time. We are trying to use Gihub Pages to get
something like [2] and that's done with a GitHub pages documentation
already done. With that in place we only need to change some colors (to
oranges and blues) and fonts, and add royale logo to match website, but
getting something unique for our docs.

Hope to get soon to this and could help in this task.

Thanks

Re: [RESULT][VOTE] Release Apache Royale 0.9.0 RC2

2018-01-23 Thread Alex Harui
I created a royale-swf account and was able to publish the royale-swf
package. I did not try to publish a 'royale' package which is the js-only
package. I will adjust the package names for the next release.

+## Audience
+We have three main audiences:
+1. Folks who have previously developed applications using Flex, and who want
to learn whether and how to migrate their apps to Royale.
+2. People who are new to AS and MXML, and possibly new to developing
applications altogether, and want to know how to get started.
+3. Experienced developers who want to see if Royale will give a better
experience both in code development and through the application's lifecycle
than what they have been using.
+
+We can't assume that everybody understands the conversational shorthand Flex
veterans use. Write for a person of good will who is reading to *find out*, and
who wants to get to the next needed nugget of knowledge soon so they can go and
make progress on the app they are working on.
+
+## Documentation conventions
+1. Address the reader directly, and in active voice, so "To do X, follow these
steps..." rather than "When a developer wishes to do X, these steps would be
followed..."
+2. Instead of "he or she" use "they" when the pronoun is for an indefinite
singular actor: "When someone has an existing application to migrate, they
should start by..." This offends my grammarian soul, but is becoming standard
English.
+3. Link generously to other content in the help docs that may throw light on
the current subject.
+4. When writing how-to material, provide the *what*, the *so what*, and the
*now what*: what a widget is, why widgets can be important in your code, and
here's how to find, adapt, or create the widget of your dreams.
+5. Use HTML comments at the top of the document for any explanatory notes for
the doc team (``) and for provenance when
adapting existing material for Royale purposes (``).

Re: [royale-asjs] branch develop updated: Fix npm module name

2018-01-23 Thread Alex Harui
If there is already a "royale" page in npm, then I don't think we can
publish this release on npm. Isn't the module name baked into
package.json? Or is there a way to set it when publishing?

keeps failing. First I had to upgrade to npm 5.6.0. The error I am
getting now is:

User not found : royale-swf

The internet is implying that we need to create accounts like royale-swf
on npmjs.org. Does that make sense? I'm going to try that next and use
private@ as the email. From what I'm reading, the layers of auth are
stricter than npm4.

Thoughts?

I have set up 2FA and presume I have to wait a while until GitHub notices.
In the mean time I may create another page or two offline...

 Hi Andrew,

Did you link your GH account with your ASF account?

 Sometimes the link doesn't work.

You should have received an email with the subject: "[GitHub] asfgit
has
invited you to join the The Apache
Software Foundation organization". Make sure it isn't ending up in
Junk/Spam, but I think you would be able to commit either way.

If you go to GitHub now, does it log you in automatically? If so,
logout
again and close all of your browsers. Then hit GitHub again to make
sure
it doesn't automatically log you in. Then try the GitBox linking and
take
careful notes of what the UI says (or grab screenshots).

Re: Proposed table of contents for Royale help documentation

2018-01-23 Thread OmPrakash Muppirala
A good workflow would be as follows:

* Create your personal branch off of the `develop` branch
* Make all your commits directly to your personal branch
* When you are ready to share your work to the world, create a Pull Request
from your branch to `develop`
* This will let others look at and review your changes.
* Now, you are a committer, that means that you can simply merge that Pull
Request yourself.

Earlier, when you were not a committer, you had to wait for one of us to do
the last step, i.e. merge the Pull Request.

Om

Re: Proposed table of contents for Royale help documentation

2018-01-23 Thread Alex Harui
Hi Andrew,

I've never used the GH UI before. If there is a way to merge your pull
requests via the UI, then you should commit them that way once we figure
out why you are having permissions issues.

Otherwise, it is time to use Git and clone the repo and figure out how to
pull/commit/push. I use Git command-line, others use GUI tools. We not
only want to you directly commit your own changes, but to handle PRs from
others as well.

I am going to ask on Infra if they have any idea what the problem is.

Thanks,
-Alex

Some easy steps to check if you have the correct access:
1. Go to https://github.com/apache/royale-docs/blob/develop/index.md (make
sure you are logged into Github)
2. Click on the Edit button as shown here: https://snag.gy/xhjDJf.jpg
3. You should be able to make the edit to the file
4. You should be able to directly commit the file as shown here:
https://snag.gy/EbIXhA.jpg

2018-01-23 Thread Alex Harui
Can you use Git to clone a repo and try a test commit? That might help
determine if the problem is that your committer rights are still not right
or just the rights to use the GH UI (which does allow me to use the edit
button).

You should now have full access to all the repos. Try editing a file in
place, it should let you to do it now.

Re: Proposed table of contents for Royale help documentation

2018-01-23 Thread Andrew Wetmore
I have logged out of GitHub and logged back in on the browser. GitHub
congratulates me for having joined Apache, and shows me the repositories I
am involved in, including royale-docs. I don't see any reference to my
permissions or how to change them.

Royale Static ASDoc

2018-01-23 Thread Alex Harui
Hi,

As you probably know, currently the only ASDoc (our API Reference) is
itself a Royale app running on the CI server. It is sort of ugly, so I
plan to spend a little bit of time making it look better. Volunteers to
help or provide feedback are welcome.

Because it is an app, I think it will be easier to add fancy filtering to
help users find things, so I think it is the right long-term strategy.
However, one major drawback is the app is not search-engine friendly.
This is also a problem I think we can solve, but that may take a bit of
work.

Meanwhile, I've learned a bit about Jekyll and realized we could generate
a static ASDoc site with a bit of work as well. The current ASDoc app
uses a pile of JSON files that the compiler knows to spit out. We could
teach the compiler to spit out MarkDown instead of JSON, or run a script
that generates a MarkDown stub for each JSON file and create a template
that reads in the JSON file to be used to generate the .html file.

The question is: how important is static ASDoc that can be indexed by the
search engines? Especially relative to other things like writing more doc
and improving the examples. Or maybe we should focus on making Royale
apps work well with search engines.

Thoughts?
-Alex

GitHub tells me I don't have write permissions to the repository when I am

Hi Andrew,

You shouldn't have to open Pull Requests any more. You should be able to
