Re: Any Sling 7 + Java 7 Integration Tests bundles with Pax ?

2014-11-03 Thread Carsten Ziegeler
Hi Dragos,

if the settings service is not started, I guess a lot of other services
won't start as they depend on it - so the settings service seems to be
the root cause.

The sling.event bundle works perfectly for me, apart from some sporadic
problems it run on Jenkins as well. Are you on windows or what errors do
you get when running the ITs?

Carsten

 Hi,

I'm wondering if there's a bundle that I could use as an example to run

I've been trying to use the example from the SlingPaxOptions - [1] wrapper

a big number of OSGI components don't start. For instance ,
 org.apache.sling.settings doesn't start any service at all. I can't

The RequestProgressTracker currently logs each RPT message as a separate log
entry. Considering the potentially large number of log entries this can add
significantly to the size of log files and the I/O involved.
By logging all RPT messages as a single log entry, the overhead can be
reduced. In addition, filtering by extension and request duration (min/max)
can further reduce the log size (and simplify analysis).

Re: Improving the flexibility of RequestProgressTrackerLogFilter

2014-11-03 Thread Julian Sedding
Hi Bertrand

Thank you for taking a look.

As you observed correctly, the API changes were done to allow more
flexibility when rendering the logs.

The main objective was avoiding the date/time stamp (e.g. (2014-10-28
10:49:20)) in each line. Because it does not add any information,
because the granularity is too coarse, and we already have the
millisecond durations.

I have attached another patch to SLING-4114 that does not change the
API. However, it drops the date/time from the message format. If
dropping the date/time from the messages is not acceptable, I can
create a slightly more complicated patch.

WDYT?

Julian

...I created SLING-4114 [0] with a patch attached that implements these

API. These should be compatible for consumers, so I think they should
 not do any harm

Still, I'm not too happy with requiring changes to the API bundle just for
 this.

IIUC your changes to RequestProgressTracker are only about extracting
data from the tracker, as opposed to providing data to it, which is
what 99% of the code that uses that API does.

So one way to avoid those API bundle changes would be to create a
SlingEngineRequestProgressTracker interface (exported) in the engine
bundle, which is RequestProgressTracker + niceties that the actual
engine provides (your changes). The SlingRequestProgressTracker
 implements this.

As all the reporting is currently done in the engine bundle that's not
a problem for Sling itself, the engine just gets the tracker and if it
implements SlingEngineRequestProgressTracker uses the additional data.

If someone wants to access that data they can do the same.

 WDYT?

We have seen problems with JSP compilation under heavy load. It looks like
when multiple threads try to compile the same JSP or tag file the result can
be NoClassDefFoundError, ClassNotFoundException or simply compilation
failures (saying method return types not match the expected type, etc.)
While I was investigating the issue I have found the following things:
First: multiple wrapper instances can exist at the same time for a given JSP
file because the caching of them (creating/storing) is not atomic. I have
verified that multiple threads can execute the compilation inside the
prepareServlet method at the same time. This was my initial prime suspect.
Synchronizing access for this method didn't solve all the problems so I have
looked into the taglib related parts as taglib related exceptions/errors
showed up frequently in stack traces.
Finally I've found out that the problem (for us) is around the loadTagFile
method of the JspServletWrapper class. This method is invoked from the
TagFileProcessor.loadTagFile method which - I believe - again, can have
different JspServletWrapper instances for the same taglib at the same time
and compiling them concurrently can lead to problems (so it seems). By adding
a per-file locking around the body of this method I am no longer able to
reproduce the compilation errors, JSP files are compiled correctly.
I will attach a patch with my changes to the 2.0.28 version (I haven't found
any noticeable changes around this area since) which solved the problems, for
 us at least.
I think I may lock for a larger scope than it is absolutely necessary so
maybe someone can advise me on this.

The RequestProgressTracker currently logs each RPT message as a separate log

By logging all RPT messages as a single log entry, the overhead can be

and all bundles start, the tests pass on my macosx system, but they
don't currently check the presence of the SlingSettings service. I'll
have a look.

FWIW to examine the state of the instance I set a breakpoint in
SlingSetupTest.testSlingBundles() and look for those lines in the
console output:

Running org.apache.sling.paxexam.util.SlingSetupTest

you can then use those ports to connect to the OSGi console and shell.

Here's a patch that allows SlingSettingsService to start with launchpad 7:
https://gist.github.com/bdelacretaz/dee49a174147e066b2b4

The root cause is a missing
org.apache.sling.launchpad.api.StartupHandler service, which IIRC is
usually provided by the launchpad startup code - the
org.apache.sling.launchpad.karaf bundle added in my patch provides
this, but it's only a temporary solution.

 Cleanup Sling Replication APIs

 Project: Sling
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: Replication
Reporter: Tommaso Teofili
Assignee: Tommaso Teofili

The Sling Replication API has evolved a lot since its inception so, before
the first release, it'd be good to perform a proper review and cleanup to
remove the methods / classes that are not needed, avoid exported packages
that do not need to be exposed.
Also a good thing would be to separate the API itself in a separate bundle.

If you write you own tests using SlingPaxOptions you'll need the
workaround as in SlingSetupTest.setup() [1], for now.

Re: Any Sling 7 + Java 7 Integration Tests bundles with Pax ?

2014-11-03 Thread Dascalita Dragos
Hi Carsten, thanks a lot for helping.

I'm running the tests on a MacOSX 10.9.5 with Java 7. I've tried to
investigate what's making the integration-tests fail but I couldn't figure
out the root cause. I can see that Pax URL Aether has issues and the rest
of the tests fail to load the cached bundle, but by looking at the logs I
don't understand what's causing this.

I'm pasting bellow the error that I'm getting in case it helps.

Thanks,

Re: Any Sling 7 + Java 7 Integration Tests bundles with Pax ?

2014-11-03 Thread Dascalita Dragos
Bertrand, thank you very much !

I wouldn't have guessed the StartupHandler issue by myself.

After adding the @Before and @After methods I can now see most of the
components resolving.
There are only 4 that don't resolve now, but they don't resolve either when
I run the launchpad-standalone-[1] on my machine so I can conclude that
this issue it's not related to the setup of the test. These components are:
- org.apache.sling.engine.impl.log.RequestLoggerService
- org.apache.sling.event.jobs.QueueConfiguration
- org.apache.sling.fsprovider.internal.FsResourceProvider
 [Unsatisfied,Service Name: org.osgi.service.event.EventAdmin]
- org.apache.sling.jcr.jackrabbit.server.JndiRegistrationSupport
AND org.apache.sling.jcr.jackrabbit.server.RmiRegistrationSupport
   [Unsatisfied,Service Name: javax.jcr.Repository]
   [Unsatisfied,Service Name: org.osgi.service.log.LogService]

But these don't block my integration tests at the moment.

Thanks a lot for helping me with this issue,
Dragos
