A webservice would be what you need.

If you are EE/PE, the good old SOAP Connector should be helpful.

If you are on CE, just search for "oxid soap web service".

I could underscore the comments from Kai.  It would be a better investment
to stabilize and improve the front-end themes-system.  At the same time IMHO
it should remain a high priority to make the /admin look better.

Also, thinking from a real-world scenario, it would be easier to maintain
end-user manuals, training materials and train support staff if there is a
uniform /admin look  feel.

  Hello Ashant,

 I would really like to see a new, modern interface for the backend, but
 this is a totally different discussion. Themes are nice to have but
 absolutely not necessary from my point of view. To be able to setup
 template-changes update-safe is something i would see as quite important.
 And: lets first get the azure-thing to work pretty and nice, before even
 thinking about changing the backend UI too!
