Well, IBM Legal just pulled the Apache License:

Still it is a nice font and I like the idea of creating an extension.

RE: IBM Plex font

2018-08-14 Thread Howard Cary Morris
Reasonable. During installation we could suggest installing fonts with the
choice of a) yes, b) no, or c) customize (choose from a list of fonts to
install). Drawbacks: May slow down installation if user doesn’t see the
message. May draw suspicion from user we are trying to install something they
did’t ask for. Hmm, it might be better to put choice on download page.

One of the virtues of extensions, is that they can be constructed to
automatically install fonts that can be utilised by AOo. As such, why
not create an extension for this, or any other font that is proposed.

The biggest issue with extensions delivering fonts, is that font
families can be huge. NoTo Font Family clocks in at just under 1.1 GB in
size. Granted, this is an exception, because it attempts to cover every
glyph in Unicode 6.0 (I say attempts to, because some glyphs in Unicode
6.0 are arguably missing.)

OK, point taken.

It could still be a good exercise to add it to trunk as a test, so that
we can check what the size increase actually is and revisit that part of
OpenOffice. Then, if there is no special benefit and the size increase
is too much, we can always remove it, but I see some value (meaning:
some knowledge gain) in trying even if in the end we decide not to keep it.

for testing purpose What-Happens-If... it would be OK also for me.

However, even when it's just a few megabytes I don't see any real need
when we keep the font in the repo. Please note: It's always starting
with "just this", then other things come along ... and this ... and this
... ;-)

One of the reasons I always selected StarOffice, besides supporting
the then-parent-company behind OpenOffice.org (Sun Microsystems) was
the addition of clipart and fonts.

http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=29652&seqNum=5

"Font stuff: There are new "metrically compatible" TrueType Microsoft
Windows core fonts. Font substitution is better. You can set up font
substitution with a new improved algorithm that makes the matching
better, including across platforms."

Back to the IBM font... it´s
 OpenType.zip is 3.82 MB
 TrueType.zip is 4.46 MB

I just downloaded TrueType.zip from the github project page,
decompressed it to its own subfolder, and recompressed it to 7zip
format using p7zip -mx9 (maximum compression). The resulting packaged
size is 2MB

2MB doesn´t seem like a killer size increase to me...

Just my two cents worth...

It would seem to me that we should limit fonts to those on the user’s computer
plus those we can load from google (provided the internet is up). That would be
simplest with least overhead. (Any other font available via internet would
also be OK.) Drawback, if when the user reedits the file, the internet or site
is down might cause some problems.
