EPEL Notes from .next discussion.

2014-08-12 Thread Stephen John Smoogen
At FLOCK this year, I did a short workshop on what was labeled EPEL.Next.
At that we went over a bit of what EPEL has done in the past, what its
current challenges are, and what could be its future. Toshio Kuratomi was
great in capturing what was said at the meeting and

EPEL

* Extra packages for enterprise linux
  * Lots of name recognition now
* Formed as rhel5 was being released
people needed more packages. at the time there were a ton of addon repos.
None of the m were compatible with each other necessarily.
All the other repos, dag, freshrpms, etc overrode the base os in some
places.

Decided for EPEL, overriding RHEL was something we wouldn't do.

Started with RHEL3,4 and soon after release we had 5.

RHEL was supported 5-7years and we figured we could support EPEL packages
for the same length of time.

Early controversy - repotags (shortened name that can be in the packages.

[graph of Fedora machines measured by unique ips that hit mirrormanager vs
EPEL machines]
[graph shows steady growth in EPEL. Larger initial Fedora machines that
rose and then plateaued]
[graph shows a noticable dip every weekend. Can also see the dip in Fedora
numbers for the Incident.]
[graph is probably conservative in numbers as many enterprises

Second graph:
[Graph shows combined growth same as last graph.]
[Graph shows EPEL5 that has risen but plateaued about the time EPEL6 came
out.]
[graph shows that EPEL6 has been growing and has surpassed the EPEL5
plateau.]

Where are we now:
We support 3 arches.

RHEL4: 1258 srpms. EOL
RHEL5: 3651 srpms
RHEL6: 5449 srpms
RHEL7: 3100 srpms and growing fastest

For CENTOS7: the epel repofile will be shipped directly with centos for the
first time.

Current Problems:
* 10+ year support for RHEL now. Hard for EPEL packagers to commit to
doing the same.
* We have requests for both newer and older conflicting packages.
  - Currently policy is not to have unpleasant surprises regarding
compatibility.
  - puppet2.x vs puppet3.x
* Some people need major changes to build new software
* Some people need no changes in order to keep existing software running
* Developer burnout: People come in and after a few years, they are burnt
out because they can't upgrade the things that they want due to the
compatibility policies.

Where are we going?
Pain Points:
* Inability to yum downgrade because only include one old package in the
updates tree
  * Harder for EPEL than Fedora because EPEL users have more need to
rollback if an incompatibility creeps in and because EPEL users may
schedule their releases
* Not every part of package repo is suitable for inclusion in anaconda
because we may not have dep closure in the subset of the repo.
  * Which RHEL point release can also make a difference because the base
RHEL sometimes upgrades incompatibly and we don't keep a separate build for
both point releases.
* Can take a long time to push packages through bodhi. Can take 7 days to
push a CVE through bodhi. (global EPEL and Fedora problem)
* Not all maintainers interpret Don't break compatibility in the same way.
* Many guidelines are verbal, not formal.
* Some maintainers are mainly Fedora maintainers and don't know what people
are using it for in EPEL. They respond to requests to install or update a
package out of a willingness to help but don't know what users need.
* No guideline enforcement.
* Takes a while for new EPEL releases to be brought out once a new RHEL
release is made (because CentOS hasn't released yet).
  * Traditionally, we wait because contributors may not have RHEL
entitilements so they need to have CentOS to test.
* Need entitlements for contributors to run RHEL (Easiest: Use RHEL,
SciLinux, Fermi Linux).
* Packages get added to one of the RH base repositories and then we have to
pull them from the EPEL repositories.
* Some people have extra layered products from RH and do not want us to
conflict with those. Other people do not have the layered products and
therefore want to be able to get those packages from EPEL.
* Overlap between EPEL and CentOS Extras.

Ideas to deal with Pain
* Get RHEL licenses for contributors. There is a process but it takes a
long while because of the tax problems for giving it to people. Current
procedure is that we get requests, we give the names to a person inside of
RH and then they eventually get back to us with licenses.
* Let's create EPIC: separate repo. 3 year lifespan instead of 10 year,
rhel life cycle.
* Debian Volatile repository and also Debian Backports. These repos
contain newer versions of packages, even for Debian Stable. Good for
packages which change all the time.
* Debian also has protection mechanism that says no major or no major.minor
version updates in apt (their yum equivalent).
* Red Hat already releases different lifecycle repositories (layered
products). Why not replicate what they do.
* What about implementing EPEL as a set of projects like Fedora Playground?
  * Would change the guarantees and expectations of EPEL

I think you mean 3 releases. we have 3 arches for epel5 and epel6 and 2
for epel7

I think i would like to see us add an epel-extras repo where things can
change faster. Things like mediawiki, puppet, etc could go in extras.

Re: EPEL Notes from .next discussion.

I think that would be something with softwarecollections.org as that seems
in line with their way of packaging items. I think that for some sorts of
packages and libraries it makes sense for that, but I don't know if EPEL
would mix and match like that. What I would like to do is the following:

We move from our moving distribution to a point release cycle with a disk
 layout like the following:

 epel
 epel/development/
 epel/development/5
 epel/development/6
 epel/development/7
 epel/beta/5.12
 epel/beta/6.7
 epel/beta/7.1
 epel/releases
 epel/releases/6.6
 epel/releases/5.11
 epel/releases/7.0
 epel/updates
 epel/updates/6.6
 epel/updates/5.11
 epel/updates/7.0
 epel/updates/testing/
 epel/updates/testing/6.6
 epel/updates/testing/5.11
 epel/updates/testing/7.0

epel/development would be like the current EPEL directories but without the
stringent requirements that packages are locked to a specific version for
the lifetime of the overall RHEL release. Instead whenever RHEL releases a
new dot release (7.0, 6.6, 5.11), EPEL would branch off the releases from
development to beta/7.0 or beta/6.6 etc. Packages would be built against
the point release and would need to be tested to get sufficient karma for
'release'. Once 6 weeks have passed from the RHEL point release, all
packages which had gotten enough karma and that had completed repository
trees would be put into epel/releases/6.6. Updates to that package would be
put into updates/testing/6.6 and then promoted to updates/6.6 when enough
karma had been given for an update. New packages which were added after the
point release would show up in updates following the process Fedora does
for new packages between point releases.

Later when 7.1, 6.7, 5.12 (or whatever they are called) comes out then the
process is repeated which will make sure that packages that aren't needed
enough to have sponsors will not be in EPEL and potentially broken and
large updates are possible so if python34 is in 7.0 but python35 is ready
for 7.2 it can replace it without problems (or similarly with ruby23 etc
etc). Once the next point release is made ready, the old point release will
be archived off to keep storage levels within reason.

I know that this proposal needs a lot more fleshing out, but I think it
covers the use cases many users of EPEL need for long term usage of
 packages.

 Stephen J Smoogen.

Were there plans made (at flock or elsewhere) for regular EPEL-related
meetings? I would like
to chip in and help where I can. I think this proposal strikes a happy medium
between stability (within a point-release) and updated features.

It was brought up but not decided as not everyone can attend FLOCK and it
would seem unfair to people who could not attend.

I would like to get a fleshed out 'we are doing X' by August 19th 2014 so
that we can move forward.

RE: making custom kernels easier to build

2014-08-12 Thread ottos
Since this topic is here. There is an error in Makefile when you do a make
modules_install. It attempts to delete a directory with a delete file command.
This occurs in two places. If you are fixing fix this problem.

Since it came up at Flock: if it's possible to incorporate this recent
experiencing testing Btrfs patches it'd be nice.

Please send requests for the kernel to the kernel list in the future.
We don't read devel as frequently.

Two patches listed here, one is based on Btrfs integration branch, the
other based on 3.16.0. I didn't realize the original patch was based
on integration branch, which is apparently why it kept failing to
apply with rpmbuild (and hence patch) on kernel-3.16.0-1.fc21.src.rpm.
I'm told in this email that git am would have sorted this out for me.
 (?)

 http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-btrfs@vger.kernel.org/msg36299.html

Request 1: if there's a more tolerant patch applying method with git that
could be incorporated, even if it's just a step that converts the patch so
that rpmbuild/patch will eat it, that would be nice. But if it requires a
local git clone of upstream's dev branch, then ignore this part because I'm
not going to do that. I'd sooner ask for a patch that applies onto something
 I'm actually going to build.

I'll look this over later. I'm far too jet lagged to do it now.

Request 2: patches to just get picked up by dropping them somewhere, like
rpmbuild/SOURCES/*.patch always get picked up and applied, rather than
requiring two manually entered entries in kernel.spec per patch.

Patches require ordering. At a minimum you're going to have to list them in
the order they should apply. The first line in the spec is to enumerate them
(e.g. Patch25100). We might be able to do something about the application, but
if we do it's going to make things more obfuscated, either by keeping the
patches in a series file elsewhere or using something else. We default to
explicit and dumb so you can see exactly what is applied where.

We build kernels daily. They call make modules_install. It doesn't
fail. You haven't given enough clear context on what you're talking

are compiler flags being honored?

2014-08-12 Thread Dhiru Kholia
Hi,

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Compiler_flags says
that Compilers used to build packages must honor the applicable
compiler flags set in the system rpm configuration. Honoring means that
the contents of that variable is used as the basis of the flags actually
used by the compiler during the package build.

In Fedora, we recently enabled -fstack-protector-strong in system rpm
configuration - but are all packages using this enhanced hardening
feature?

To answer this question (and more), I wrote a program for scanning RPM
packages, in order to see which compiler flags were being used to build
them.

The flags-scanner projects lives on GitHub,

https://github.com/kholia/flags-scanner

Initial scan results are available on the following URL,

https://halfie.fedorapeople.org/flags-scanner/

Now, I need your feedback and cool ideas to improve this project :-)

Thanks,

I would accept this explanation except notice the line @rm -rf
$(MODLIB)/kernel which by your def is a symlink but has the -rf for removing a
directory and on my machine all of the above are directories so it is intending
to delete files in those directories and it works when I correct it.

Attempting to contact unresponsive maintainer - alon

2014-08-12 Thread Kevin Fenzi
Greetings, we've been told that the email addresses
for this package maintainer is no longer valid. I'm starting the
unresponsive maintainer policy to find out if they are still interested
in maintaining their packages (and if so, have them update their email
addresses in FAS). If they're not interested in maintaining or we
can't locate them I'll have FESCo orphan the packages so that others
can take them over.

If you have a way to contact this maintainer, please let them
know that we'd appreciate knowing what to do with their packages.
Thanks!

* alon - former email address al...@redhat.com
  https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/packager/alon/

Point of contact:

python-volatility -- Digital artifact extraction framework ( master f21
f20 f19 )
xorg-x11-drv-qxl -- X.org driver for QXL virtual GPU ( master f21 f20

If we don't hear anything in a week, we will be setting the point of
contact on these packages to orphan.

Thanks,

Yes, Taskotron is awesome and it would be great to get this scanning

Currently, this is somewhat complicated because I need to patch and

 It does fail Try it

This sort if failure occurs when someone does a cp -r or better yet, a scp
-r to copy the build tree elsewhere and the directory symlink gets replicated
as a directory, instead.

From long, harsh experience: do not try to decide, in a Makefile, whether a
directory is a symlink and get cutesy about it. Use the rm -r hammer to make
sure.

[Bug 1128373] Review Request: perl-Audio-Cuefile-Parser - Perl cuefile parser module

2014-08-12 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1128373

--- Comment #2 from Hans de Goede hdego...@redhat.com ---
Hi Christopher,

Many thanks for the review. I'm going in vacation in 2 days, and I still need
to wrap up various other things, so I'm not sure if I will get around to doing
a new version before then.

As for swapping, I'm all in favor of that. bug 1128335 looks like an easy
review, so I'll go and review it right away.

I've plenty more perl modules coming up. I'm trying to at least get all the
modules squeezeboxserver needs which have a binary component packaged up. As
these cannot be used as bundled by upstream on ARM. So when I'm back I'll
happily swap some more reviews for the rest.

Note these are my first perl packages, as such it may be best if I review non
perl packages for you, and I may need some guidance left and right.

perl beginner question, how did you come to the missing BuildRequires ?

Thanks,

Hans

(In reply to Hans de Goede from comment #2)
perl beginner question, how did you come to the missing BuildRequires ?

You need to go through the perl code and see what modules get actually loaded.
Look for the `use', `require' and `no' statements, although there are other
ways, too...

`use' and `no' are evaluated, unlike `require', at compile time and modules
loaded this way will always be needed (if your module gets actually tested).

 Oh boy, yet more bureaucracy!

I'm not sure what bureacuracy you are speaking of as this has been standard
procedure for years.

Folks, Plack-1.0031 already is in f22 and rawhide, but I could not update
 f19 and f20 because perl-File-ShareDir-Install in f20 and f19 is too old
(not worth mentioning epel7, which IMO is unmaintainable).

So you need the below mentioned updates for your Plack update? It looks like
they were just recently pushed to testing to testing and adding karma will be
the way to get them out the door sooner.

So, instead of molesting maintainers with bureaucratic forms, better help
out pushing these package builts, ASAP, such that perl-Plack-1.0031 can be
 submitted:

There is no molestation occurring here. If these packages are needed for your
update then by all means test them against your package and provide karma.
It's what we packagers do.

(In reply to Ralf Corsepius from comment #2)
  Oh boy, yet more bureaucracy!

I'm not sure what bureacuracy you are speaking of as this has been standard
 procedure for years.

Right - And I have been repeatedly complaining about this bureaucracy for
years. Unfortunately nothing has improved. Openly said, I feel Fedora's
bureaucracy is ballooning and has never been bigger.

Exactly.

Like many other perl modules, Plack has a long dependency chain, which needs to
be kept quite close to current, otherwise quick responses to bugs aren't
possible. This time, perl-File-ShareDir in fc19 and fc20 weren't new enough.

  It looks
like they were just recently pushed to testing to testing and adding karma
will be the way to get them out the door sooner.
*I* submitted them a couple of days ago and they are in Fedora's (7 day)
release _delay_ queue.

[BTW: In recent times, the 7 days quite often prove to be 10-14 days.
e.g.
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2014-9066/perl-Mail-GnuPG-0.20-1.fc20]

So, instead of molesting maintainers with bureaucratic forms, better help
out pushing these package builts, ASAP, such that perl-Plack-1.0031 can be
  submitted:

There is no molestation occurring here.
C'mon, stop cheating.

No-molestation would equal to no additional effort and to complete ignore you.
Distribution-wise, would not change anything.

Do you want me to do this or are you insisting on me reading your mails,
closing the BZ and fill your the form?

Do you notice something? No molestation is different.

If these packages are needed for
your update then by all means test them against your package and provide
karma. It's what we packagers do.
Another self-cheat. Just have a look at how many updates I have pushed (I guess
1000s). Hardly any of them has received karma. This karma-stuff is
non-functional non-sense.

--- Comment #6 from Emmanuel Seyman emman...@seyman.fr ---
(In reply to Ralf Corsepius from comment #5)

Like many other perl modules, Plack has a long dependency chain, which needs
to be kept quite close to current, otherwise quick responses to bugs
 aren't possible.

Given that the patch that fixes the security is a one-liner, I think this is a
difficulty you're imposing on yourself more than it is a hard requirement.

Please, use the existing package review for this.

Also, requesting new branches in this manner and listing someone else as the
maintainer is somewhat rude.

I apologize, sincerely.

I read that document and used the template I found there, but honestly IMHO it
was hard to understand clearly where to post it.
I wrote steve because he is listed as the package owner here
https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/cpanspec/bugs/ (I got there trying to
decode the explanation in the same document).

Sorry

on a production server no single devel package should be required

Thanks for reporting, I know about this and I am already working on it, but I
had to postpone it because of Flock.

For the record, it is caused by slightly different behavior of new admesh-libs
(slic3r bundles older version).

[Bug 1129443] repeatly deps to perl-devel

2014-08-12 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1129443

--- Comment #1 from Ralf Corsepius rc040...@freenet.de ---
What I can gather from this mess, is that there is a dependency between
perl-IPC-Cmd and perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker which is (correctly!) pulling in
perl-devel.

From IPC/Cmd.pm:
...
require ExtUtils::MakeMaker;

my @possibles;

if( File::Spec-file_name_is_absolute($command) ) {
return MM-maybe_command($command);

} else {
for my $dir (
File::Spec-path,
File::Spec-curdir
) {
next if ! $dir || ! -d $dir;
my $abs = File::Spec-catfile( IS_WIN32 ? Win32::GetShortPathName(
$dir ) : $dir, $command);
push @possibles, $abs if $abs = MM-maybe_command($abs);
}
}
...

maybe_command originates from MakeMaker.

One resolution to this problem would be to eliminate this use case of
maybe_command in perl(IPC::Cmd).

--- Comment #2 from Petr Pisar ppi...@redhat.com ---
I'm sorry the dependencies defined by upstream code pollute your system but
that's how it is.

As Ralf pointed out correctly the issue is that perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker gets
installed into your system. perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker is a development tool,
hence it pulls in perl-devel, yet it's a Perl core module which many other
packages use because it provides nifty functions.

If we cut the dependency between perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker and perl-devel, users
would lose capability to build XS Perl modules which is one common drawback
presenting in other distributions and one people, usually web application
deployers, often complain.

Therefore the best solution is to split perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker to separate the
nifty functions, however it requires upstream blessing and that's a thing I
cannot see bright.
