Greetings testers!

It's meeting time again on Monday! We're done with Fedora 21, so now's
the time to pat ourselves on the back a bit, relax a bit, and also start
looking forward to Fedora 22. I've been talking to the anaconda folks
about a proposal for doing installation testing a little differently for
Fedora 22, so we can have a preliminary discussion about that. Please do
come along (if you can make it) if you're interested / involved in
validation testing. If you can't make it, though, don't worry, there'll
certainly be further discussion on the list.

As always, please reply to this mail if you'd like to propose any
additional topics!

== Proposed Agenda Topics ==

1. Fedora 21 final check-in
  * Retrospective - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_21_QA_Retrospective
  * Common bugs - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F21_bugs
  * 0-day update testing
2. Fedora 22 planning
  * Early installation testing
  * FESCo / devel@ scheduling discussions - tick/tock?
  * Test days
  * Tooling: taskotron, blockerbugs, relval
  * Release criteria changes (esp. multiboot)
3. Open floor

Hey, where did that dialog come from ? Not in our F20 xfce spin (not in

release ? Exactly what we are looking for.

PostgreSQL is a good example - 9.4 is in the release candidate stage
right now and will probably be declared stable within a month. If it
doesn't at least make it into updates-testing before F22, I'll be
adding 9.4 from the PostgreSQL project's RPM repos or building it from
source. I need a major new feature - Binary indexable JSON storage.
GDAL and QGIS are other examples; I ran for a couple of months
building gdal 1.11.0 from source and installing QGIS from non-Fedora
repos because I needed those features and they weren't in
updates-testing.

In the past Postgresql has not been updated during a release. Typically
the new Postgresql version had to be out by the Fedora beta of the
release it first appeared in. So mostly likely Postgresql 9.4 will never
be a normal update for F21. There is an option to make it a copr, but
I think that Postrgesql makes compatible RPMs for people that what to
run specific versions regardless of what comes with a distro.

Postgresql is a special case though, because upgrading a database is
something that needs a lot of caution.

And unfortunately, a new PostgreSQL IS incompatible, because if you just run
yum update, your databases will cease to work. You have to actually dump
them BEFORE doing the upgrade (or downgrade PostgreSQL for the dump, or
install the old version in parallel, which is not supported by the RPMs),
then do the upgrade, and then import the dump. As long as upstream does not
change this migration policy, it will NEVER be possible to provide newer
PostgreSQL release series un updates.

Recent versions of Postgresql do let you upgrade the data. But that entails
some risk. Also changes could break applications or configuration for it.
So while it can be a bit more covenient to do an upgrade now then it was
it the past, this is still something you don't want to have forced upon you.

That makes the upgrade easier to do, but you still need to have a backup
plan if the upgrade in place fails. In addition you need to worry about changes

Part of the reason for this is that it creates problems for testing minor
(as in small, not as in unimportant) updates for the release that is
in the base release or updates. Suppose there was a 9.4 release of
Postgresql in updates-testing for f21 and an important update for 9.3 became
available. It would be hard to get testing of the 9.3 update while the
9.4 version was also in testing.

Bad default error policy causes printing issues and BIG usability issues

2014-12-06 Thread valent.turko...@gmail.com
Hi,
currently default error policy for printers in Fedora is Stop printer on
any error which is a really bad default. I have run across this issue LOTS
of times with regular Fedora desktop users who don't get why has their
printer stopped working, there is no UI queue to warn users, there is no
easy way to Start printer with one click after it has been stopped. It is
just a big mess.

Even worse, previous versions of Gnome control panel (if I remember
correctly) had option to change default error policy, now that option is
removed and you can get to it only by installing system-config-printers
tool, something regular users have no idea about even exists, and it is not
installed by default.

There are too many examples which are simple user errors but result in
priner going offline (stopped) and this is really bad, because after any
small error users can't print any more.

For example: user trying to print while he/she is not at home so his/hers
printer is not available, user trying to print but has forgot to connect
usb priner cable, user trying to print but haven't turned it on, user
printing to wifi printer but while connected to different wifi network...

Any of these actions is simple uses error but results in permanently
disabling of priner (Stops printer) and users can't print even when they
resolve issue that was stopping them from accessing the printer.

Now Fedora is what is stopping them from printing.

Who is responsible for user experience of Fedora desktop? To whom should I
point this issue to?

  - https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/package/dcmtk/

Mr Mario, the current maintainer is looking for a co-maintainer for the 'dcmtk'
Fedora package. If you are interested, please apply for the co-maintainer
commit access via the package db(pkgdb) link above.

The latest 'dcmtk' snapshot build needs to be pushed to Fedora repositories to
fix the bug above security issue.

Thank you.

I don't care how you call it. The fact remains that doing a release without

Well, it kind of matters, if you're going to throw around lines like
