Re: swap on ZRAM, zswap, and Rust was: Better interactivity in low-memory situations

This old bash fork bomb example fails (Fedora 31, earlier versions not tested) $ :(){ :|:& };: [ 1765.728408] cgroup: fork rejected by pids controller in /user.slice/user-1000.slice/session-3.scope So use 'munch' instead https://gist.github.com/n3rve/7897c8ce1e17c22dc17a1df1b4e645f4 kernel 5.2.13 $ time ./munch Measuring the time it takes to fill all memory and swap. I'm waiting about 1 minutes between each run, with no other activity happening during that time. The typical outcome is: "Allocated 14729 MB Killed" 8GiB RAM, 8GiB swap on SSD plain partition 1. 0m43s 2. 0m47s 3. 0m46s now enable zswap, lz4/zbud, with a 20% pool 1. 0m10s 2. 0m10s 3. 0m11s now disable all of that (zswap and the swap on SSD) enable swap on ZRAM at 1:1 ratio with installed RAM, using lz4 1. 0m11s 2. 0m10s 3. 0m11s --- In the 2nd case, with zswap, swapon does in fact report 8GiB gets used just before the kill. That's a little confusing because zswap compresses both the memory pool as well as what spills over to the swap partition. Do I have more swap available because it's compressed? Doesn't seem to be the case as reported by 'free' or 'vmstat'. Do I use less swap on disk? swapon says no. And yet the speed it's getting to the swap partition suggests it's really completely compressed already and isn't really generating much of any writes (because it's a synthetic test, I assume all zeros, and thus highly compressible). ? So, it's vaguely interesting. Slightly more interesting, comparison to swapfiles on the same SSD, per file system. Btrfs 1. 0m50s 2. 0m46s 3. 0m53s Ext4 1. 1m18s 2. 1m2s 3. 1m6s XFS 1. 0m48s 2. 1m2s 3. 1m1s Btrfs had the disadvantage in that it was not a new file system, rather substantially used, many file system resizes. The ext4 and XFS file systems were created just for the test, and were created on partitions that had 'blkdiscard' issued beforehand. It's a requirement to use chattr +C (nodatacow) on Btrfs, which implies nocsum and nocompression. Anyway, they aren't ridiculously out of line with using a plain partition. So plausibly someone could create a systemd generator that dynamically creates and destroys swapfiles. And also creates a hibernation file just before hibernating. Not sure about encryption for any of that though. -- Chris Murphy ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org

So I accidentally built PySide2 5.13.1 for Fedora and the MAJOR.MINOR parts are supposed to match with the version of Qt. So unless someone is planning to update Qt from 5.12.x to 5.13.x in the near future I'm going to have to bump the Epoch and downgrade to 5.12.5. openQA test flake heads-up: desktop_browser test failures
Hey folks! Just a heads-up for anyone watching the openQA test results for their updates. If you see a failure of the desktop_browser test which seems to end on Firefox rendering https://accounts.fedoraproject.org/ weirdly, like this: https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/450082 https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/450082#step/desktop_browser/7 it is not caused by your update, it's some kind of flake which showed up last week - probably a new intermittent bug in Firefox. On Monday I'll teach openQA to work around it and investigate it a bit more thoroughly. I'm also re-running tests that hit this bug when I see them, so eventually you should see the result for your update clear up, but until then you can safely ignore it. Martin, I'll file a bug on this for you. -- Adam Williamson Fedora QA Community Monkey IRC: adamw | Twitter: AdamW_Fedora | XMPP: adamw AT happyassassin . net http://www.happyassassin.net ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org

ntl soname update, and maybe normaliz
A new version of ntl, 11.3.4, has been released. Since upstream has a policy of bumping the soname on every release, all dependent package must be rebuilt. I will take care of all of the rebuilds. (I'm maintainer or comaintainer on almost all of them, anyway). The builds will be done in about a week. The packages to be rebuilt are: eclib flint giac latte-integrale linbox Macaulay2 normaliz polymake pynac sagemath Singular In addition, a new version of normaliz (3.8.0) is available. I have not yet determined if the current versions of polymake and Singular are compatible with it. If they are, then I am also going to bump the normaliz soname, since those packages all have to be rebuilt for the ntl update anyway. -- Jerry James http://www.jamezone.org/ ___ devel mailing list -- devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org

The C++ compiler does not care either way, it is the same > type. Whitespace is not syntactic in C/C++, unless it splits a token into > 2 > (e.g. "long int"). I need to learn more C/C++ one of these days... Long story short the difference was due to autotools vs. CMake implementation, not the version of Coin. I even patched CMake to produce the same output as the Coin3 version of the file so they were identical other than comments. It's still choking on the same file. Getting frustrated with SWIG's lack of useful error output. I've tried patching in a few different debug option but it hasn't produced anything useful. If I remove "-includeall" from SWIG I get rid of the missing standard c++ include problems but then it produces: BUILDSTDERR: /usr/include/Inventor/Qt/devices/SoQtDevice.h:73: Error: Syntax error in input(1). This only place this error is mentioned in the SWIG documentation is in the Warnings section, which is funny because it's an error not a warning and it's used an example of warning output, no further details given. On googling it, I've read that the line number is not reliable if macros are involved so I really don't know where to look. Because I'm having ot build a stack of programs at once using mockchain I figured this would be a good time to try out toolbox. It works from my regular login but when I su login to my build user (I do all my packaging work separately from my main login) it doesn't work: $ toolbox list toolbox: unable to migrate containers: runtime directory not created Looks like it needs to mature a bit. Here, we have a library with only 6 packages using it, and the source-level API appears to be compatible, so I think a grouped update of all 7 packages (the library + the 6 dependent packages) may well make sense, depending on what the other changes are. But yes, backporting security fixes should always be considered, it would also get the fix out sooner than coordinating a grouped update. I do not know the details well enough to be able to decide which is the better way here. Both should be doable in principle. It should not. The C++ compiler does not care either way, it is the same type. Whitespace is not syntactic in C/C++, unless it splits a token into 2 (e.g. "long int"). QWidget *foo, QWidget* foo, QWidget*foo, and QWidget * foo are all valid ways to spell the same declaration. QWidget *foo is really how the language works, e.g., you have to write QWidget *foo, *bar; to get 2 pointers, QWidget* foo, bar; will be read as QWidget *foo, bar; and give you only one pointer and one stack-allocated object. So IMHO QWidget *foo is the correct way to write it. But many developers prefer QWidget* foo because they say the * is part of the type and should be attached to the type.
