Chromium would probably benefit from icecream, though.

One thing to note here... this is not just one firefox build taking 2
days. It's one firefox build taking a number of hours, failing and then
the maintainer fixing that issue and resubmitting. You don't see the
failed builds because you can try and rebuild the same N-V-R in koji as
many times as you like until it is successfull.

This is on my list of things to investigate one day. Ceph has the same
problem - builder machines with 16GB RAM can barely build Ceph.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25603162 has some other useful
info about icecream.

I think for Firefox, what's taking most of the time is the %check phase.
Has that even been parallelized using icecream?

It would require more than that. It would require having our
networking and build systems able to talk to other systems when they
are building. For security reasons we turn off networking inside the
mock so that we don't get packages pulling in crap during the build. A
distributed build by definition is pulling in 'crap' from other
systems so you have to not just have networking turned on, you have to
have tools to make sure the 'crap' is really the stuff you wanted.

I don't see that happening anytime soon. The issue with builds being
stuck is a problem but it needs a systematic fix across the board
versus just for 'Firefox'.

What module are you using? It may have been reimplemented in PipeWire,

I get several errors related to Qubes OS. Most of them are cases that will
need to be fixed by the Qubes OS team, but the lack of an upgrade candidate
for PulseAudio is concerning, as Qubes OS currently ships a PulseAudio
module for sound support in VMs. Is there a replacement for PulseAudio
modules in Fedora 35? Some sort of PipeWire plugin?

Heads-up: grpc 1.40.0 coming to Rawhide with C++ soname bump

2021-09-09 Thread Ben Beasley
In one week (September 16), or slightly later, I will build grpc 1.40.0
for Rawhide (F36).

As is traditional for minor releases of grpc, the C++ ABI was broken
(soversion bumped from 1.39 to 1.40). This time, the C (core) ABI
remained stable (soversion 18).

I will coordinate builds of packages that use the C++ libraries in a
side tag. Maintainers of the following packages should have received
this email directly:

  • bear
  • frr

If you are one of these maintainers, and you want me to handle these
rebuilds, I am happy to do so. You will need to grant me commit
privileges on the project.

Packages that use only the C (core) libraries should be unaffected this
time:

  • perl-grpc-xs

Packages that use the Python bindings should also be unaffected, as
there should be no incompatible API changes:

  • buildstream
  • python-chirpstack-api
  • python-etcd3
  • python-google-api-core
  • python-google-cloud-core
  • python-grpc-google-iam
  • python-opencensus (orphaned)
  • python-opencensus-proto
  • python-opentelemetry
  • python-pytest-grpc
  • python-xds-protos

I am not planning to bring this version to F35, since I don’t see a
compelling reason to do a breaking update this late in the release cycle.

Looking for *your* stories of Fedora history -- can we do a brief interview? (Or, send me your thoughts!)

2021-09-09 Thread Matthew Miller
Hey everyone! In a couple of weeks, I'm going to be giving a talk at Open
Source Summit called "35 Fedora Releases in 30 minutes"

This is basically going to be a whirlwind tour of our history. I was there
for a lot of it, but not all, and certainly not from all perspectives. In
preparation, I'd like to get more of your input. If you're interested in
sharing what you remember about Fedora Core 3 (Heidelberg), or Fedora Linux
8 (Werewolf!), or even F23 or F27 or whatever, or anywhere in between, I'd
love to hear from you.

Please send me a message off-list, either saying "yes let's set up a video
call", or what some bits of info I might include.

Thanks!

So then you'll get it after your mirror synchronizes after a push to
testing (which happens at midnight UTC every night). As soon as a
build is submitted to Bodhi successfully, it is queued to be pushed to
testing in the *next* push.

We'd need icecream[1] support enabled in Koji. I am not even sure Mock
(the build engine) supports icecream right now.

There are users (such as myself) who have the equivalent of

$ sudo dnf -y --best --refresh --enablerepo=updates-testing --security --
upgrade
$ sudo dnf -y --best -- upgrade

in their update scripts. Also, could the Fedora project itself perform at least
basic QA for critical security patches?

Security is not worth anything if the application doesn't work. We
don't ship updates immediately to users after they're built *no matter
what*. They go through the update manager (Bodhi) to get validated for
release.

Two days for builds is not great, but it's not the end of the world.
Would it be nice if we had more powerful builders? Sure. But it still
would take a minimum of 2 days for something to go out since it needs
to get pushed, pass tests, and get karma to autopush to stable
releases.

Should the FF builds be given more resources? Does Mozilla provide a signed

We have a big problem that nobody speaks about: MacOS.

The default and correct value of LC_CTYPE on MacOS is "UTF-8", but this is not
a valid Linux locale string. And MacOS sends this by default - so, given the
popularity of MacOS, the only sensible thing to do for Linux is not to accept
locale-related environment variables. Or at least, filter out known bad values
somewhere, but that would be a lot of fragile distribution-specific logic that
I would rather not see.

1.21.2 to 1.20.1 ?

Looks like a bug in the reporting scripts maybe? Not sure.
I built new modules in the 1.20 and mainline (version 1.21.3 at this
time) stream yesterday. So maybe the reporting script got confused.

The rawhide branch in Git looks fine to me. It has the latest stable
version of nginx, 1.20.1 at this time, and the latest version of the
specfile including the dynamic module changes from Neal.

If you simply compare NEVR then the latest version (1.21.3) lives only
in the stream-mainline branch as the mainline branch is not considered a
stable release train by upstream. This branch is only built as a module
and shouldn't interfere with non-modular installs that only get the
latest stable version.

Also, when I look at https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/nginx,
the description is:

[... lots of unformatted text from README.dynamic ...]

That is due to the fact that Pagure will try to Markdown render anything
that starts with README. A recent commit adding capabilities to build
dynamic modules out of tree added a file called README.dynamic that is
not Markdown formatted. This is what Pagure picks up.

Thanks for pointing this out, I otherwise would probably have missed this.

Regards,
Felix

The two packages are from different streams (1.20
<https://mbs.fedoraproject.org/module-build-service/2/module-builds/12925>,
mainline
<https://mbs.fedoraproject.org/module-build-service/2/module-builds/12850>).
The reporting tool should not compare packages from different streams.

This command does not replace `dnf system-upgrade`, but it will reveal
potential problems.

You may also run `dnf upgrade` before running this command.

If you get this prompt:

Is this ok [y/N]:

you can answer N and nothing happens, no need to test the actual upgrade.

But very likely you get some dependency problem now. In that case,
please report it against the appropriate package.

Or against fedora-obsolete-packages if that package should be removed in
Fedora 35. Please check existing reports against

fedora-obsolete-packages first:

and also there is already bunch of "Fails to install"

1.21.2 to 1.20.1 ?

Also, when I look at https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/nginx,
the description is:

### Dynamic modules ### Dynamic modules are loaded
using the "load_modules" directive. The RPM package for each module has a
'.conf' file in the /usr/share/nginx/modules directory. The '.conf' file
contains a single "load_modules" directive. This means that whenever a new
dynamic module is installed, it will automatically be enabled and Nginx will be
reloaded. Prevent
dynamic modules from being enabled automatically
 You may want to avoid
dynamic modules being enabled automatically. Simply remove this line from the
top of /etc/nginx/nginx.conf: include /usr/lib64/nginx/modules/*.conf;

I recreated the file anyway and it works now.

The difference seem to be that there is a new second comment line at
the top of the file about not modifying it.

Was the format changed and no update scriplet provided at some point ?

It was not not erased. The BSD license still applies and the binary package
must comply.

In Fedora, we distribute these copyright notices in files packaged using
%license macro. If mpir does not do that, it violates the BSD license.

(Although one could ask whether the source packages with the original sources
which Fedora also distributes are not "other materials provided with the
distribution". I guess the they are not, because e.g. installation DVD does
not contain sources and "everybody" considers it a standalone distribution.)

> Or does the License tag encode only some subset of the binary's licensing
> conditions?

What the License tag encodes is not mandated by the used licenses. E.g. the
BSD license does not state that you have to enumarate it in your packaging
format. The License tag is only a well-intended hint to our users to know
what licenses cover the package.

The guidelines say how we populate the License tag. For instance they
specificially distinguish between an executable combined from multiple
licenses and a package containing multiple files, each with a different
license. In the first case you can melt and supersede the licenses with an
effective one because it is deemed that a binary executable cannot be
untangled back to the original source files. But the latter case still
mandates listing all the licenses.

> If so, it cannot be used to determine what you are allowed and

> tag then?

I agree it's a lossy transformation E.g. (GPLv2+ a.c and GPLv3+ b.c files)
→ GPLv3+ c binary. But the transformation should not be deceiving. E.g. (GPLv2+
a.c and CC0 manual page) → GPLv2+ package.

>
I think it much depends on the exact licenses, wheter one license is indeed
a superset of the other one. Hence I worry that one cannot write (reasonable
short) guidelines which would comprehend all the cases. That's also the reason
why I'm not in favour of these guidelines and rather spell all the licenses my
packages.

Ok, I've grabbed those five and add rust-sig and virtmaint-sig as
committers too, so we have plenty of redundancy.

Right, this looks like an inconsistent /etc/locale.conf setting. It
doesn't look related to locale forwarding.

This would work... if the target system has a properly configured
locale, which is not the case many times. E.g., [1] is still

Disable locale forwarding in OpenSSH

2021-09-09 Thread Florian Weimer
There is a movement towards C.UTF-8 for small images (containers and
VMs). C.UTF-8 has both size and performance improvements over the more
traditional en_US.UTF-8 locale. (The performance improvement is
currently in upstream glibc only, but we plan to bring it to rawhide and
Fedora 35 shortly.)

However, in a world where glibc-langpack-en (or glibc-all-langpacks) is
not installed on target systems, logging in over SSH does not result in
a viable locale if the client use en_US.UTF-8 (or any other locale
except C or C.UTF-8). This causes a severe degradation in user
experience. It's not only that UTF-8 output does not work, there are
also frequent warning messages from various tools. Some may even refuse
to run completely.

I tried to bring up this topic on the OpenSSH list to get some
cross-distribution consensus, but the discussion didn't actually go
anywhere:

Phasing out forwarding of locale settings

I think Fedora should do this unilaterally, dropping the downstream
additions that enable locale forwarding in both the default client and
server configurations. If we do that, the OpenSSH server will use the
locale as configured with localectl for new interactive and
non-interactive sessions, which is C.UTF-8 in many cases. At least
that's what my testing on Fedora 33 suggests.

Comments?

Florian

If I try to do this I get an error:
# grub2-editenv - set menu_auto_hide=1
grub2-editenv: error: environment block too small.

What the issue here ?

Perhaps /boot/grub2/grubenv is corrupted and grub2-editenv is not very good at
reporting errors. This happens when the file was accidentally truncated. Does
it have 1024-byte size?

If it does not, back up the file and reinitilize it with
"grub2-editenv - create"

Why it does not contain the `menu_auto_hide=1` by default when running this
command?? :/

Because this how upstream works. From the manual:

COMMANDS
create
Create a blank environment block file.

You took the question too literally, while my whine was more figurative.

Initially, I was going to answer this:

IOW I don't think this is good default and even if this might be
considered good default for upstream (because from upstream POV, the
empty file is sufficient), it is not good default for Fedora IMO. In
Fedora, the output of such (or similar) command should already include
`menu_auto_hide=1`.

But thinking about this more, I think my biggest pet peeve with this
issue is that there is no simple way to reset to Fedora default. Would
the system boot without the `/boot/grub2/grubenv` file? I hope so. So
can I delete it to fix the issue at hand? I can't. Can I recreate the
file? I can't. Can I reinstall some package to fix the issue? I can't. I
don't know how else should I figure that I am supposed to put
`menu_auto_hide=1` somewhere to get the Fedora experience back?

collections.Sequence was deprecated from Python 3.7.

Well the fix looks simple enough but it's the bundled spidermonkey that
needs to be patched and it's gziped inside of the 0ad archive with a
separate patching mechanism. BLEH.

I started looking into this yesterday… The attached patch moves past
the import errors, and cuts the warning noise to a manageable level.
Maybe it'll be useful as a start for someone. The build still fails with:
AttributeError: module 'sysconfig' has no attribute '_get_default_scheme'. Did
you mean: 'get_default_scheme'?

That is still Python 3.10 relevant. The "private"
sysconfig._get_default_scheme function has been made public (and hence
has a new name, without the leading underscore). Since it was private,
this is not considered as a breaking change. No code outside of Python
standard library should have used it 路

The system mozjs78 got fixed to build with python 3.10 and the changes needed
for that might be helpful even though 0ad uses a different release of
mozjs78 than the one used for system.

P.S. 0ad just got orphaned because of this issue still being unfixed.
