Re: strange python3 mock error

2023-04-17 Thread Miroslav Suchý

Dne 17. 04. 23 v 17:55 Adam Williamson napsal(a):

+ %py3_build
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.XYSHTs: line 44: fg: no job control

And that error in turn usually means there is a syntax error in the
spec file. In this case I'd guess the package may be missing a build
dependency on whatever package includes the %py3_build macro?

Exactly. The %py3_build is not expended. And not expended macro is left as is (unles %{?foo} is used). So the bash is
trying to execute '%py3_build" command. That is treated as job control:

https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/html_node/Job-Control-Basics.html

You can run in bash:

  %foo

and you get the very same error.

The solution is to fix your buildrequires.

Latex2e-translated-notice was recently added to Fedora allowed
licenses. For BSD-4.3TAHOE we have
https://gitlab.com/fedora/legal/fedora-license-data/-/issues/174
which shouldn't have been closed because we didn't add a TOML file for
it. So I'll reopen that.

Yes, I will get it in before the 6.3 release next Monday, that way it
will automatically follow into stable Fedora as they get the 6.3

Re: soname bump: libtraceevent and libtracefs

2023-04-17 Thread John Kacur
There is a new tool that is dependent on these libs too. Also from Daniel
Bristot (rtla)
tools/verification/rv

I was wondering if we could get this into rawhide?

Re: Auto-assign packager sponsors to tickets?

2023-04-17 Thread Otto Liljalaakso

Jakub Kadlcik kirjoitti 17.4.2023 klo 18.53:

I want to thank you all for the feedback.

Everything was already mentioned in the discussion so I am not going
to dig into details again. Just a quick summary for anyone who wants
TL;DR for this thread:

- I am not going to implement the original proposal or any variation of it
- Instead, I am going to automatically open an issue in the
package-sponsors tracker for new contributors after they receive
fedora-review+ on their first ticket. A link to this issue along with
some explanation will be automatically commented to their package
review Bugzilla ticket.
- You can follow the progress here
https://github.com/FrostyX/fedora-review-service/issues/18

Sounds great, thank you for working on this!

F39 proposal: Remove webkit2gtk-4.0 API Version (System-Wide Change proposal)

2023-04-17 Thread Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Remove_webkit2gtk-4.0_API_Version

This document represents a proposed Change. As part of the Changes
process, proposals are publicly announced in order to receive
community feedback. This proposal will only be implemented if approved
by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee.

Summary
The webkit2gtk-4.0 API version will no longer be built. Packages that
depend on it will fail to build from source and eventually be retired.

Owner
* Name: Michael Catanzaro
* Email:

Detailed Description
The webkitgtk source package currently provides three different API
versions of WebKitGTK:

* webkit2gtk-4.0: for GTK 3 and libsoup 2
* webkit2gtk-4.1: for GTK 3 and libsoup 3
* webkitgtk-6.0: for GTK 4 and libsoup 3

Building three different package versions is slow, and Red Hat does
not wish to do so anymore. We will remove the webkit2gtk-4.0 API
version, which is provided by the webkit2gtk4.0 and
javascriptcoregtk4.0 packages. Everything that depends on these
packages will fail to build from source and will eventually be removed
from the distribution unless fixed.

The good news is that updating your package to webkit2gtk-4.1 is
probably easy because there are no API changes other than the version
of libsoup that is linked to. If your package does not directly or
indirectly depend on libsoup 2, then just change the API version
number from 4.0 to 4.1 and you're done.
Here is a typical example of how easy this is.

However, if your package does directly or indirectly depend on libsoup
2, then you will need to eliminate that dependency, which will require
more effort. If your application links to libsoup 2 via any
dependency, it will crash if also linked to libsoup 3.

This is a slimmed-down version of the
libsoup 3: Part Two change proposal
that was previously rejected by FESCo. Instead of removing all
packages that depend on libsoup 2, packages will only be removed if
they depend on both libsoup 2 and also WebKitGTK. No effort will be
made to remove libsoup 2 from the distribution (though an obsolete
HTTP library is a major security risk and packages really ought to
stop using it).

Benefit to Fedora
libsoup 3 brings support for HTTP/2, whereas libsoup 2 supports only
HTTP/1.1. Users will experience shorter load times and improved
responsiveness in applications that use WebKitGTK. Users of
applications that previously used webkit2gtk-4.0 will have one fewer
massive package installed after this transition is completed.

Additionally, the WebKitGTK package maintainer will be less grumpy
because WebKitGTK will need to be built only twice for each supported
version of Fedora, rather than three times.

Scope
* Proposal owners: ensure packages required by Fedora Workstation and
ELN no longer depend on webkit2gtk-4.0 (already done)

* Other developers: ensure other packages no longer depend on webkit2gtk-4.0

* Release engineering: #11368

* Policies and guidelines: no policies or guidelines would need to be updated

* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)

* Alignment with Community Initiatives: None

Upgrade/compatibility impact
To be determined. The newer packages can either Obsoletes the older
ones, or not, since they are not compatible, it's probably not
appropriate to use Obsoletes?

How To Test
Applications ported to webkit2gtk-4.1 need to be tested individually
to ensure they still work. It's unlikely anything will go wrong for
applications that do not directly or indirectly use libsoup 2. If an
application or one of its dependencies needs to be ported to libsoup
3, then there is more potential for trouble.

User Experience
Users will experience shorter load times and improved responsiveness.
Additionally, there will be one fewer huge package that might be
installed on user systems.

F39 proposal: Remove standard storage option from Fedora EC2 images (Self-Contained Change proposal)

2023-04-17 Thread Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/CloudEC2ImagesNoStandardStorage

This document represents a proposed Change. As part of the Changes
process, proposals are publicly announced in order to receive
community feedback. This proposal will only be implemented if approved
by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee.

Summary
AWS offers multiple
types of block storage depending on the needs of the individual user.
Fedora images are uploaded with `standard` and `gp2` currently (`gp3`
will replace `gp2` very soon with another
approved change).

The `standard` storage is a previous generation storage option with
less performance and less consistent performance than the other
storage types. It also causes some confusion when AWS customers look
through the list of Fedora cloud images in the EC2 console because now
they see four images (aarch64 + x86_64, both with `standard` and
`gp2` storage).

Removing the `standard` storage option would reduce the amount of
images that appear in the console, but AWS customers could still
provision Fedora on standard storage during the instance creation
process if they really want that storage option.

Owner
* Name: Major Hayden
* Email: ma...@redhat.com

Detailed Description
The scripts that upload images to AWS will be adjusted so that they do
not include the creation of an AMI with standard storage. AWS
customers could still choose that option at instance creation time if
needed.

Feedback
No alternatives have been proposed yet.

Benefit to Fedora
This would reduce the amount of Fedora AMIs that appear in the EC2
console by half and it would ensure that Fedora lands on AWS' best
performing storage (soon to be `gp3`) by default. It avoids a
situation where an AWS customer (without a strong knowledge in block
storage types) starts a Fedora instance on standard storage and gets a
low performance experience.

It would have no effect on running instances or existing AMIs.

Scope
* Proposal owners: This is an isolated change that should be made
within `fedimg` and it affects only the AMI creation process.

* Other developers: Should not require work from other developers.

* Release engineering: No work should be required from releng for this change.

* Policies and guidelines: N/A (not needed for this Change)

* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)

* Alignment with Community Initiatives: Should make it easier to
display Fedora AWS images on the Fedora Cloud page.

Upgrade/compatibility impact
Existing systems will not be affected by this change. Customers
launching new instances will get better performing storage by default
but will still have the option to select standard storage if they
really need it.

How To Test
1. The updated version of fedimg should create only `gp2` (soon to be
`gp3`) AMIs.
2. We can verify that the latest image upload from rawhide (after the
fedimg change is made) will only include a gp2/gp3-backed image.

User Experience
AWS customers who are not familiar with different block storage types
should always land on high performance storage. They still have the
option to choose other storage types at instance creation time.

Dependencies
Only fedimg needs to be updated. There are no other dependencies.

Contingency Plan
* Contingency mechanism: N/A (not a System Wide Change)
* Contingency deadline: N/A (not a System Wide Change)
* Blocks release? N/A (not a System Wide Change)

Documentation
N/A (not a System Wide Change)

Release Notes
Fedora AMIs for EC2 now default to the latest `gp2/3` storage option.

[EPEL-devel] Retiring flintqs in EPEL7/8/9

2023-04-17 Thread Ben Beasley
As previously proposed on the epel-devel mailing list, and in accordance
with the EPEL Retirement Policy: Process: Security Reasons[1], I will be
retiring the flintqs package in EPEL7, EPEL8, and EPEL9 today.

When I took over maintenance of the flintqs package[2]—which contains
William Hart’s quadratic sieve implementation, as modified for
sagemath—I built it for EPEL7, EPEL8, and EPEL9. My thoughts were, “Why
not? Someone might find it useful.”

It was recently pointed out[3][4] that the flintqs command-line tool
uses temporary files in unsafe ways[5], which could potentially
represent an exploitable security vulnerability; this has been assigned
CVE-2023-29465[6].

There is no immediate patch available; while one could surely be
constructed, the sagemath project plans to incorporate the factorization
algorithm directly in sagemath and discontinue support of the vulnerable
command-line tool rather than fixing it[7].

Since sagemath is not packaged in any of the EPEL releases, and flintqs
is therefore a leaf package, I am handling this security report by
retiring flintqs in all three EPELs.

Anyone who does need FlintQS on EL will need to consider their security
threat model, then build it from source—either by cloning the upstream
GitHub repository, or, for the time being, by rebuilding the Fedora
source RPM. Note, however, that the Fedora package will also be retired
as soon as it is no longer needed by sagemath.

BSD-4.3TAHOE and Latex2e-translated-notice are on the spdx.org/licenses list,
but are not in fedora-license-data. Please open a license review issue at

rksuska was removed from packagers some months ago:

https://pagure.io/find-inactive-packagers/issue/253

python-flask-whooshee was orphaned and is now taken by msuchy. I've
resetted the BZ ticket assignee to the default assignee (msuchy).

And that error in turn usually means there is a syntax error in the
spec file. In this case I'd guess the package may be missing a build
dependency on whatever package includes the %py3_build macro?

I want to thank you all for the feedback.

Everything was already mentioned in the discussion so I am not going
to dig into details again. Just a quick summary for anyone who wants
TL;DR for this thread:

- I am not going to implement the original proposal or any variation of it
- Instead, I am going to automatically open an issue in the
package-sponsors tracker for new contributors after they receive
fedora-review+ on their first ticket. A link to this issue along with
some explanation will be automatically commented to their package
review Bugzilla ticket.
- You can follow the progress here

The code that you're building doesn't seem to be pushed anywhere, so it's
hard to see what's going on (ie, the latest version currently in dist-git
is not calling %py3_build).

The mock error is just what happens when a build fails. This seems to be
the real error:

Upcoming Fedora Legal hackfest - converting to SPDX IDs

2023-04-17 Thread David Cantrell
Fedora Legal will be conducting a hackfest on April 26, 2023 during a four
hour block. Information is on the SIGs calendar:

https://calendar.fedoraproject.org/SIGs/2023/4/26/

We will be focusing on the ELN package set in Fedora and preparing pull
requests for those packages to convert the License tag to a valid SPDX
expression. There will be a short presentation and [hopefully] a video
walking through an example package and the steps we want package maintainers
to follow.

If you can make it, great! We expect to do more of these events in the
future.

What

Hackfest for updating the license field in ELN packages to SPDX license
expressions.

Date

Wednesday, April 26, 2023

Time

10:00 - 14:00 US eastern time
18:00 - 22:00 Central European time

Where

Google Meet: https://meet.google.com/fiu-jdzq-mws
(chat.fedoraproject.org information coming soon...awaiting new chat room)

How

There will be a short presentation for background and a demo on updating a
package to start, then we'll work on packages and be available for
questions and help.

We plan to have more events like this to help package maintainers convert
License tags in spec files to SPDX syntax.

Thanks,

That happens here too, of course. I think it's really a consequence of
greater conversation visibility rather than Discourse per se. And, Discourse
gives greater ability to moderate those -- either to hide them, or to split
them out into separate discussions so they don't distract. Or, at a greater
extreme if we want to do this, we could limit direct participation in some
discussions to members of FAS groups we decide (others could participate by
replying in linked threads).

> * There is no threading like we have with emails, so these replies

There actually _is_ threading in Discourse topics. It's just not presented
in as a nested tree. For example:
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/future-of-encryption-in-fedora-desktop-variants/80397/4?replies_to_post_number=2

I probably should have been a little more active in moderating that thread.
But also, I'm working on building up a bigger moderation team to help with
that. (This too is waiting on the FAS group sync.)

I have bumped some of the default limits -- and I have a planned solution
for this long-term Fedora contributors in the very near future, as we will
soon have FAS groups synced to Discussion. When that is available, we can
make it so membership in a FAS group automatically grants "trust level 1",
which removes most limits. (The "trust level 0" limits are pretty important
to stop spammers and trolls, so I don't want to relax them further.)

Heads-up: USD 23.02 coming to Rawhide

2023-04-17 Thread Ben Beasley
Now that Blender 3.5 has landed, I can update the usd package in Rawhide
to version 23.02[1]. I plan to build it in one week, 2023-04-24, or
slightly later.

The .so version is bumped (as with every release) and the monolithic
library is renamed from libusd_usd_ms.so to libusd_ms.so. I am also
enabling the Draco plugin now that draco is packaged in Fedora; this
adds the usdcompress command-line tool.

The sole dependent package is blender; I will rebuild it in a side tag
myself.

[EPEL-devel] Fixed crb, testing on RHEL requested

2023-04-17 Thread Troy Dawson
A bug was found in /usr/bin/crb [1] dealing with how crb determines if you
are on a RHEL system or not. A fix was made and tested on every RHEL
compatible distro I could find. So I'm very confident about those.
But for real RHEL systems that use subscription-manager, I only have access
to a few different types of installs and containers.

Could some people who have access to some of the more exotic RHEL installs
(SAP etc...) check and see if the new /usr/bin/crb works correctly for them.

The new update is in
epel-release-9-5.el9 [2]
epel-release-8-19.el8 [3]

Thank You

Re: Getting back the old Bugzilla bug entry form

2023-04-17 Thread Ben Cotton
Mea culpa. My understanding was that this would not impact the sorts
of use cases that were broken. Clearly that's not the case.
Regardless, this should have been better communicated and tested. I
take full responsibility for that; I should know better.

I'll work with the Bugzilla developers to get this fixed or rolled
back if it can't be.

It no longer fully functional. This will disrupt our Python 3.12 work :(

Apparently, the RHEL 9 product still has the old form, so Fedor amust have
opted into this. I wonder, where was this change coordinated? How did I miss it?

So it looks like the server just inserts “-Fedora” unconditionally.

We link to

We have a workflow that generates links like this:

url_prefix = 'https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi?'
params = {
'short_desc': summary,
'comment': description,
'component': str(package),
'blocked': TRACKER,
'product': 'Fedora',
'version': 'rawhide',
#'bug_severity': 'high',
'cc': '...@redhat.com,...@redhat.com'
}

# Rate-limit opening browser tabs
async with browser_lock:
webbrowser.open(url_prefix + urlencode(params))
await asyncio.sleep(1)

It no longer fully functional. This will disrupt our Python 3.12 work :(

Getting back the old Bugzilla bug entry form

2023-04-17 Thread Florian Weimer
Guided bug filing in Bugzilla was rolled out today.

Is there a way to get back the old entry form? It doesn't look it's
possible, specifying ?format=FORMAT gives this error:

| file error - cannot find file -
| bug/create/create-FORMATguided-Fedora.html.tmpl ()

So it looks like the server just inserts “-Fedora” unconditionally.

And including the user agent in the description without warning is not
cool. 8-(

Thanks,
Florian
