Wrapping Sugar activities for other desktops

2008-11-06 Thread Martin Langhoff
Must preface this noting that I am relatively naive about Sugar
internals. "Your thoughts are stupid and your face ugly" may be the
most appropiate answer to this - after all, I know about the server,
not the laptop :-)

 ...

Thinking about how to extend the appeal (and long term viability!) of
sugar activities, one thing that appears as a clear opportunity is to
create a wrapper that allows to run sugar activities in a conventional
gnome/kde/xfce/awesome desktop.

It could open a regular window (instead of the root window), and
mimick the minimal set of Sugar facilities that activities depend on.
Perhaps a thinner, lighter set of classes providing the sugar api (add
the path to these "shim" libraries early in the python path to mask
the "full blown" sugar libs).

Right now, if I install on ubuntu sugar-activities, I get turteart,
but I can only use it inside sugar-emulator. If we had such a shim so
that

  $ sugar-wrapper turtleart

would start turtleart in a regular window, then that command can be
given an icon in my gnome menu, kde's kickstart menu, etc.

Of course there are some hard things

 - clipboard support probably needs glue
 - journal behaviour - though it might be relatively simple
 - naming documents that the user hasn't named explicitly
 - the initial steps of sharing a collaborative activity
(announcement, invites, etc)

but if it's within reach, it can be worthwhile.

thoughts? bricks?

cheers,

1. I and someone else updated http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Live_CD , taking
the opportunity to clean up some of the other Live CDs here.
2. I added this to http://wiki.laptop.org/go/LiveBackup_XO-LiveCD as well.
3. I updated the broken livecd link in
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Template:Latest_Releases (the green box on
many wiki pages) to point to 2.

(I suggest you use ISO 8601 date format in the future. 081106 looks
like August 11th 2006 to us clueless North Americans, "2008-11-06" has
no ambiguity for anyone anywhere. Also, release notes as a 310kB PDF?!)

Dumb question: what is the difference between a .iso and a .img file
like http://download.laptop.org/xo-1/custom/g1g1/gg-767-4/gg-767-4.img ?
Can you mechanically transform one into the other? 1. says "copy [a
.iso] to a prepared USB flash drive" but presumably it's not that simple.

1. links to that, it also links to the sugar-jhbuild liveCD page

I need to go to a trade show to get USB flash drives and SD cards for

Ah, I remember we discussed this way back then... I think that this
way is better, but there was a specific case to consider when we
discussed, I think the same one you raised nowabout SOTP.

I'm happy to wait untilyou have a chance to test it before calling the

BTW, Reuben is about to start playing with SOTP, he's been following
your posts, so he seems quite clued in into what he needs to do. If
there's any hidden trap or trick that hasn't been discussed on the

[Server-devel] XS 0.5 RC - getting closer...

2008-11-06 Thread Martin Langhoff
http://xs-dev.laptop.org/xs/other/OLPCXS-0.5-dev8-i386.iso

This is our release candidate. Other than a minor change to the name
of a config setting, I think we are _done_.

I'll run one last set of tests - I specifically want to doublecheck
that upgrades work cleanly from xs-0.4. Please join me in testing --

Is there a feature of the XS you specially care about? This is the
time to test it...

And then we're done. Some bits need documentation, I'll work on docs
in the coming days.

cheers,

quizá puede ser porque las claves de activación tienen una fecha de

Confirmed. By replacing the files now scim-anthy works even with

(my locale setting is ja_JP.utf8 in ~/.i18n and envrionment variable)
while IME still can't be activated for Etoys and Scratch. Both are

New XO-LiveCD Version 8.2 available

2008-11-06 Thread WolfgangRohrmoser
A new version of the XO-LiveCD is available.

You can download it from:

  ftp://rohrmoser-engineering.de/pub/XO-LiveCD/XO-LiveCD_081106.iso

This release is based on the ext3 image of the stable 8.2 branch, build 767.
The CD contains many activities, including all G1G1 activities.

Main features:

   * latest stable version of the sugar desktop
   * large and customizable collection of activities
   * expandable language support, already included are German,
 French, and Spanish languages.

This XO-LiveCD project targets the main goals:

   * Give children, students, teachers and parents
the opportunity to participate and use the
educational software on a common PC.

   * Demonstration of OLPC/Sugar software to non-developers, you can also
start the sugar desktop on Windows, Linux or MacOS using a
 Virtual Machine.

   * For developers the CD provides an easy maintainable Live-System,
which could be used to develop and test activities on the sugar desktop.

Further information is available in the PDF document:

Awesome, how much time would it take to get implemented?

Thanks,

This certainly seems like a reasonable solution.

I'm fine with giving commit access to pilgrim/joyride to any Sugar
developers who want it. Shall we just do that instead?

Thanks,

Error lease

Saludos

Hello everybody.

We've had problems with the activation of some machines.
It happens that have been off without notice, the reasons we have not yet
safe,
and when we want to re-activate them with the keys previously used for the
same purpose, and that they had
worked, they do not want to work right now.
analyzing the usb, the XO shows a sign of interrogation that do not find the
key, but when we look at the file lease.sig,
we noticed that the serial code is there as everyone else. This does not
happen with all the laptops that access the same file to find the key.

Do you know why the XO can not find the key if it is in the file lease.sig?
Is there a limit to use the same activation key on the XO?
Do you know some of the causes of the sudden deactivation? = we think that
could be for misuse of the laptop, or the sharp variations in electrical
current in this location.

We thank you in advance for your help.

Greetings

Re: sugar 0.83 in joyride

2008-11-06 Thread Tomeu Vizoso
Hi again,

I'm thinking that perhaps best would be to create a joyride branch
similar to faster that sugar developers could administer by ourselves.

In that way we wouldn't be blocking on each other so often and Sugar
developers could more easily adapt Sugar to the OLPC hardware.

Sounds good?

If there's any problem with this, please explain.

Thanks,

Tomeu
