The methods I've used to check for non-empty directory are:
1. try assuming the directory is empty and if an exception occurs
handle it, using catch,
2. try assuming the directory is non-empty and if an exception occurs
handle it, using catch,
3. write a file counter, using the filesystem

I'm leaving for Uganda next Monday and will be volunteering for a couple
of days at Kasiisi. Apparently nobody knows the password to their
server and it has stopped functioning as they expect it to. They have
about 200 laptops.
