The RSSI is much lower than usual, the noise floor is a bit lower than
usual, as a consequence the signal to noise ratio is too low for
reliable operation.

There is a major fault in the radio system of this bad laptop.

I do not recall what you have tried so far, but my advice is to change
the system a component at a time to find out which component is at
fault.  There are only three components that can be changed;

- change the left-hand antenna and coax,

- change the right-hand antenna and coax,

- change wireless card.

Test again after each change. Record the results. Identify the
faulty component and replace it.

Predictable causes of failure for each component:

- antenna physical impact damage,

- water in antenna case,

- broken coax cable termination inside antenna,

- coax cable twist, compression, abrasion or water damage,

- coax cable connector physical damage,

- wireless card connector physical damage,

- wireless card electrostatic discharge damage,

- wireless card water damage,

- wireless card product lifetime or thermal cycle damage.

Interpretation is described in the Wiki page. To interpret further I
would need to see the result.

You might compare the average RSSI of a working laptop against the
average RSSI of a failing laptop, with both laptops tested in exactly
the same position on a bench, 1m from an access point.

Did you see a "Devel key Signature valid" message ?

If you didn't, one possibility is that the UUID in our database
doesn't match the one actually in the laptop. This is corrected by
getting the correct information using a new collection USB key.

Nothing should happen. You have to do an extra step to take full
command:

Shutdown the laptop,

Insert the USB drive or SD card containing the developer key, or with
the key on the internal storage,

Hold down the '✓' (check) game pad key and turn on the laptop, a
diagram of the game keys should appear with a message Release the game
keys to continue,

Release the '✓' (check) game pad key, and within ten seconds a Devel
key Signature valid message will appear, with an open padlock icon,
followed by Type the ESC key to interrupt automatic startup,

Press Escape key once, and the 'ok' prompt should appear immediately.

The laptop is now unlocked temporarily.

If this doesn't work, try a different medium. e.g. USB drive:

Make a directory called security at the top of your USB drive and copy
the develop.sig file into it.

You should now have a USB drive a directory security which contains
develop.sig, in. This is an unlock stick ready to use.

It has nothing at all to do with the problem.

Re: WiFi Problem

2014-05-05 Thread James Cameron
Juan,

There are many tools and methods to test with, to find the cause of
the problem. You should be able to use all tools, otherwise it is
more difficult for us to help you.

Test with a developer key, and then remove it before returning the
laptop to child.

The developer key can be used on a USB drive, with an activated laptop,
without disabling security.

So please do apply for a developer key for these two laptops. Send me
the laptops.dat file by e-mail. I may be able to give you a key with
limited duration (e.g. 14 days).

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Collection_stick shows the process to use.

Once you have unlocked laptop, I can lead you through some more tests:

- check the antennas and cable, using
  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Antenna_testing

- check for a kernel bug we know about,
  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/12757

- update to most recent operating system build, (you can always put it
back to what it was later, but meanwhile you learn critical data; is
the problem caused by old build),

I agree with John's plan as well. Based on your mail so far, this is
a problem with the laptop, not the software, but the software can help
to find the cause.

> sugar no luck.

Software confusion aside, now you have my interest.

You have tried using a known good antenna(s), and a known good card, and
still saw the problem ?

My first suggestion in a case like this is to replace the main antenna
with a known good one and retest.
The main antenna is the left-most one when looking at the motherboard,
and is usually connected to the right-most connector on the WLAN card
(labelled "Main").
The next suggestion is to replace the WLAN card. If you've done both of
those and it still doesn't work well, look in /var/log/messages for any error
messages from the driver (indicating a possible problem with the SDIO bus).

Just about the only thing left to try is to measure the +1.8V and +3.3V at
the card socket while Linux is running, there could be something wrong with
the power switches Q29, Q37 and Q38.

Regards,
wad

If the wireless network is hidden, then it may not be shown by ''my
neighborhood'', but may be shown by ''iwlist''. See
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Hidden for more details.

The OpenFirmware output will be most useful, as it excludes the
operating system and Sugar ... and therefore I would be able to conclude
whether the hardware is working correctly.

I don't understand, sorry.

If you mean iwlist or scan-wifi show the correct output, but ''my
neighborhood'' does not, then it sounds like a Sugar problem. Check
that the ''my neighborhood'' screen does not have a search string set.

That's interesting. What model of XO? What operating system build?

To adjust my instructions, you can either:

1. use OpenFirmware, at the ok prompt type

ok scan-wifi

or

2. stop NetworkManager before the scan:

sudo service NetworkManager stop
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo iwlist eth0 scan

This evidence is not very useful; it only proves that NetworkManager was
running already, and therefore that a failure of NetworkManager was not
the cause of failure to detect wireless networks at school.

I suggest you do this test on each affected XO:

sudo iwlist eth0 scan

... and see if the wireless networks at school are shown. If they are
not, then either they are not present, the wireless card may be faulty,
or the antenna cable may be faulty.
