I had the same problem here on a DragonFly BSD laptop.
Commenting out the line
memset(pSmi->FBBase, 0, 256 * 1024);/* #689 */
in SMI_LeaveVT() in file
xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/siliconmotion/smi_driver.c
solves the problem for me - at least I did get no more hangs until
I have Panasonic CF-R1, which has siliconmotion
(--) Silicon MotionChipset: "Lynx3DM"

On this machine, (1) NetBSD/i386 1.6ZG and (2) FreeBSD-5.1
