We are students of Lund University doing our Bachelor thesis for the Systems
Design-programme.


We are conducting research on why and how FOSS projects fork. The aim of the
research is to better understand the special issues regarding FOSS-projects
with regards to the forces leading up to a fork. We hope that any knowledge
gained from this can be incorporated in the future education of System
analysts. Our focus is the motivation of the developers involved. We are now
looking for developers from the XFree86 and X.Org projects who would like to
share their experience and thoughts with us to base our research on.


If you are interested in helping us please reply in private to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you desire to be anonymous we will take action to ensure this. Obviously
it will be hard to mask what projects has been involved in the study as we
have contacted you in public allready. However, the interviews will be
anonymized by the best of our abillities while still retaining credibillity
for the data. Before finalizing the thesis all participators will recieve an
altered copy of their transcript (the one which will be published) to
approve it. We appreciate the sensitivity of the matter, however it will be
hard to conduct scientific research without some means to validate the
conclusions. If the interviewee does not find the altered transcript
acceptable we will discard the transcript, or the sensitive parts thereof,
and not use it in our research.

I have built X for a PorwerPC board with a Silicon Motion video
controller. I have all the resolutions and colour modes working
with the exception that depth 24 and 16 have the colour information
byte swapped.

I can modify the offsets and masks for depth 24 but cannot
get depth 16 correct because of the byte swapping.

Is there a easy way to buid XFree86 with the frame buffer
memory accesses byte swapped without swapping the MMIO register
accesses ?

the source.

Now I want to play MPEG4 video on the card.I will get input as RGB not the 
YUV data initially.
I need a very high frame rate of around 25-30fps. What part of hardware I 
need to program additionally other than BitBLT engine and how to achieve this 
rate? Will the way of using fbmem into pages help inthis regard? Will 
utilisation of double buffering helpin this regard???

There appears to be a memory leakage problem on the client side when using X
shared memory extension. This leak only appears when the size of the shared
image is less then (about) 128kB. The whole allocated memory leaks, meaning it's
not freed properly. The version of X I'm using is 4.2.1.

that depends what your display requirements & system design are? is it basically
1 app doing the display?  what/how much do you display? whats the target
"hardware" and its abilities (dumb framebuffer B&W? 8bpp? 16bpp? 32bpp? any
acceleration?) what resolutions? touchscreen? other input devices? account for
all of this when choosing. X (even tinyX) is a huge sledgehammer to solve what
might be a very small problem, and in the world of embedded, smaller is better,
so never use too big a sledgehammer compared to the problem size.

Take a look at http://www.retinalburn.net/linux/dri_xv.html.  I have a DRI
snapshot and a second set of binaries that integrate the GATOS and DRI
mach64 drivers that you can install over the DRI snapshot.  The binaries
are for x86, but there is also a patch against the DRI mach64 branch in
cvs that you can use to build the driver.  This will give you 3D and
XVideo support (I've tested overlay/scaling, but not TV-in/capture) with a
single X server/driver.  At some point I may get around to rolling these
into a single binary package.  At the moment the patch and binaries are
based on 4.2.0, but I'll be updating them to 4.3.0 after the release.

No, it won't happen for 4.3.0.  I don't know what the status of
integrating the GATOS Xvideo functionality for mach64 into XFree86 is for
future releases, but I know that it won't be done for 4.3.0.  Maybe Marc
can comment on his plans in that regard.  

As far as the DRI driver goes, we need to make some changes to secure the
DMA path before it gets merged into the DRI cvs trunk.  Also DMA is
currently only working on x86, but there is a fallback MMIO path that has
been tested and used successfully on ppc.  Once the driver is merged into
the DRI trunk, it will be a candidate for inclusion in XFree86.  I hope
that we can get this done well in advance of the next major XFree86
release (4.4.0?), but it depends on the free time of the developers.

- gatos.sf.net (that is working on TVout and XVideo)
- dri.sf.net (as regards 3D)

I think that both of them did a great job even if they are still beta.

mach64 chip is getting older and older and these patches are still
out of the xfree86 CVS.

Now I've to untar the beta dri drivers and restart X when I need 3d
and need to untar the beta gatos drivers and restart X when I need XVideo.

I would really like if at least one of these 2 project is soon included
in XFree86 (with the default set to disabled if you're worried about
stability) so  I've just to get the patched binaries of the other one
to have my mach64 card fully working.

And I think that this will lead to more beta testers that will hopefully
speed up the development (hoping that there are still people using
this old chipset).

Could anyone here if this merge can happen before xfree86 4.3.0?
