I don't believe that PSK31, PSK63, or RTTY are the best that can be
done on HF-- but no protocol attractive enough to displace them has
yet been developed.
This remains an open challenge, not a closed book. Skip KH6TY's
latest work seems promising...

Hi Jeff,
I can tell some of the modes on the waterfall, but then again many are
not really discernable. By combining the sound of the mode with the
appearance on the waterfall, you can get better at it. Bandwidth is one
factor, the relative number of tones, certain spacing, etc., all help to

Hey Jeff - your neighbor K7NHB here.
Don't give up on SSTV. One of the software packages I use - not MixW -
automatically determines the correct SSTV mode. Or, you can pick the
Scotty mode and be correct 90% of the time.

Rick,
My interests are similar to yours, ie, effective emergency comms, and just
trying out all the different modes.
I have two main issues: 1. Being brand new to digital modes, I find it rather
difficult to tell what mode I'm seeing on the waterfall. I recognize PSK,
RTTY, MFSK16 (now), bu
Hi guys,
It occurred to me that right at the end of 30m might be a good place to
do WSPR.
The APRS packet ops use 10.149.200 and 10.149.400 for their transmitted
tones so this would leave a 500Hz margin if you used 10.149.900 for
WSPR. Of course you would need to be especially careful you stay
Following a suggestion from Andy K3UK that 7.000 MHz dial frequency
might be a better channel for WSPR in Europe (7.0746 can suffer very
heavy SSB QRM) a number of us operated there on Saturday night/Sunday
morning with acceptable results.
My spottings are attached below. These were received on
Hello David,
With Multipsk, you can send, in Video ID, the mode but also your call, name,
QTH, locator...but not "73" specifically.
However, if you put "73" in your Locator information field, you could send "73"
at any moment (with the macro).

Well, I see it is not Olivia's fault, but people's conservadurism not
trying the newer modes. As it has been said before, most people on PSK31
uses ONLY PSK31, and very few of the most restless attempts other modes.
I believe that there is another ongoing revolution on beaconing with WSPR.

Andy,
Hope you get feeling better soon...hang in there.

I had thought that CHIP64 was basically an experimental mode with little
practical value until it was pointed out to me that at least one Digital
Net uses it in Virginia. I have monitored their transmissions a few
times, even though it is on a NVIS frequency and I am at a quite distant
location
Yes, I also sent "CQ" and occasionally "63" (for PSK63) in the PSK
waterfall. I used DM780 to do this...

yesterday looking around 30m with psk(not sure if 31 or 63), i saw, but
did not catch the tail end of a signal in the waterfall with a "73"
printed after it.
this did not look like an video id as used by multipsk. this signal was
simply formed by the psk signal itself.
anyone got an idea ?

During the TARA Skirmish I made allot of contacts on PSK31/63/125 and RTTY
only, on 40 and 20 meters. Also during the weekend period I had quite a few
QSO's on Hell during the Feld Hell Club contest. Last weekend I made allot
of contacts on PSK31/63/125 during the 070 Flavors contest.

I would keep Hell, yes it is not as popular as PSK or

there are active nets/contest for Hell. Take a look at
the group.

I have been concerned for some time about the lack of interest in the

have any interest in digital modes to begin with. About half the hams

Andy,
I greatly sympathize with your medical problem as this is one of the
reasons I retired early with severe arthritis and nerves being crushed,
particularly from the C5 vertebrae. I finally had an MRI and the
situation is pretty bad. Three years ago I did not want to live. The

Hello, i have exactly the same problem.
PSK31 is a good mode, but i'm tired of PSK31 only QSO.
I try to use exoctic mode only.
All flavors of Hellschreiber,
Throb, Ale, Olivia, ALE, Stanag, Packet, ...
It can take MANY hours to get a single reply in MFSK16 while there is
a lot of psk31 around.
