Emergency voice communications has it's place, especially UHF and VHF short
haul, in support of the responding agencies. We, for example , often support
Search and Rescue teams in the field, using VHF and often GMRS., and often the
served agencies system as well. We are not limited to ham bands
Voice for emergency comms is even less effective as CW for emergency comms, and
fails under a lot less rigorous conditions.
PSK, and the other digital modes can provide comms in conditions where voice
cannot work, and at a much higher speed. PLUS, at the end, you end up with a
printed message r

I would like to point out that Dave Struebel
and the Winlink Group are responsible for most of the QRM we enjoy on HF
from unattended Winlink
stations, especially around 14105 to 14110.
If Winlink, rather than spreading themselves out
all over the band, were to confine their operations
I agree with Andy. OLIVIA has worked better for
me between 2 distant points. tried MT63, MFSK and OLIVIA, and came to the
conclusion
that Olivia worked best under poor conditions.
In terms on NTS and traffic handling, what would be
great would be a message "template" which could
hey this is just a little brushfire. and it
needs to be discussed

Basically all the digi modes that run on sound card
software will work on your 850, which is a good stable rig to run it
on
The only thing you can't run, without the purchase
of a fancy modem , would be pactor.
Have a look at Mix W and MultiPSK for
software

Sounds like you might have run into the volume
control problem there are 2 volume controls for your sound card, in and
out. Windows calls them recording and playback. To access both , click on
"properties" while in the volume control mode under windows, and then you can
set both th
