[IxDA Discuss] [ EVENT RECAP ] IxDA NYC Table-4-20 w/ Special Guests (Whitney Hess and Karen McGrane) on Feb 18

2010-02-22 Thread IxDA NYC
We'd like to thank everyone who came out for our February 18 “Table-4-20”
IxDA NYC event. A special thanks to industry leaders Whitney Hess and Karen
McGrane who attended as our special guests.

For two hours, the attendees shared casual conversation and New York pizza.
The atmosphere was very relaxed, and no one hesitated to switch seats and
join conversations at other parts of the table.

 *The Event Objectives Were:*

- To gather professionals of similar interest together for a focused
conversation

- To give access to leaders in the field for direct questions

- To introduce IxD professionals to each other

We look forward to having a similar event in the spring!

*About our guests:*

*WHITNEY HESS* is a user experience design consultant based in New York City.
She helps make stuff easy and pleasurable to use.

Prior to going independent, Whitney was on the design team at Liquidnet, an
international financial software company that runs the leading electronic
marketplace for wholesale stock-trading. Previously, she was an interaction
designer at two marketing agencies, Digitas and Tribal DDB, where her
clients included American Express, The New York Times, Allstate, Claritin,
Tropicana, and EarthLink. Most notably, she helped to conceive, design, and
test an innovative card search tool for American Express, and is named as a
co-inventor on its U.S. patent.

Whitney is a strategic partner with Happy Cog and user experience consultant
for Boxee, among other startups and major corporations. She received a Bachelor
of Arts in Professional Writing and a Master’s degree in Human-Computer
Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University. She writes about
improving the human
experience on her blog, Pleasure and Pain http://whitneyhess.com/blog/ and
can always be reached viaTwitter @whitneyhesshttp://twitter.com/whitneyhess
.

*KAREN MCGRANE *If the internet is more awesome than it was in 1995, Karen
would like to claim a very tiny piece of the credit. For more than 15 years,
Karen has helped create more usable digital products through the power of user
experience design and content strategy. Today, as Senior Partner at Bond Art
+ Science, she works with clients to create personalized portals that
dynamically update based on user behavior, develops data visualizations that
make complex quantitative information easy to understand, and consults with
publishers on ways to make their sites more appealing to readers and
successful for advertisers.

Prior to starting Bond, Karen helped build the User Experience practice at
Razorfish, hired as the very first Information Architect and leaving as the
VP and National Lead for UX. Over the decade she spent there, she led
projects for dozens of clients, overseeing major redesign initiatives for The
New York Times, Condé Nast, Disney, and Citibank.

Karen is also on the faculty of the new MFA in Interaction Design program at
SVA in New York, where she teaches Interaction Design History, focusing on
the key movements and trends that have shaped the field, and Design
Management, which aims to give students the skills they need to run
successful projects, teams, and businesses. She received an MS in Technical
Communication fromRensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with a focus on
Human-Computer Interaction.

See you then,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Looking for feedback on a functional banner that is always there and pinned to bottom of the browser - not context driven.

2010-02-22 Thread Maria Cordell
Crate and Barrel (http://www.crateandbarrel.com/) does this as well.
As a consumer, I think it works well in a shopping context, and it
doesn't get in my way. I like the way they've implemented it, and it
feels elegant, but then again, I haven't bought anything that online
at CB; when I shop there it's always in store.

As a designer I have to wonder how many online shoppers get it, but it
seems the CB design is doing a reasonable job of providing cues for
what's happening when an item gets added to the cart, and they're
showing item thumbnails for what's been added. Would be interesting to
know if/how they tested the design.

It seems of little use to me as it is redundant to
information/function that is already on the site, takes up real
estate and is more a distraction than anything else. Maybe with some
additional context driven function there might be something there,
but the CEO here liked it so I'm doing my due diligence. I can't
remember seeing anything like it before.

I happen to be one of these recruiters and I can assure you there is
definitely an increase in UX jobs. I have been doing creative, web
and advertising recruiting for almost 7 years now and I have never
seen this kind of demand for UX/IA talent. I have done nothing for
the last 2 months but work on UX and Interaction design jobs. Sure I
had to Wikipedia a few of the buzz words, and not all recruiters your
are going to speak with are going to have the industry trends and
verbage down just perfect. However, that has nothing to do with the
fact that there are companies/agencies hiring and these recruiters
have direct access to their hiring manager and decision makers...

If anyone is interested in hearing specifically about what I mean and
what I am seeing, please feel free to contact me directly

2010-02-22 Thread Dave Malouf
hmm? I think I'm just not that cynical.

the lion's share of job reqs I've ever been a part of were created by the
hiring department and not by the recruitment staff. When I've been a hiring
manager the only reason I created laundry lists like these is b/c the
budgets required it. Not to lower salary, but b/c the reality is that unless
you can make shit, your skills as a designer to communicate to all
stakeholders is severely limited.

I have also learned that from my perspective for Jr. designers, I can mentor
UCD stuff a lot easier and in shorter time than I can a laundry list of
technical and tool stuff. I know this is the opposite of what even I have
expressed in the past, but I have learned over the years that an amazing UI
Developer with an open mind is easily convertable to the UX frameworks. But
it is DAMN hard to ramp up a pure UXer on programming beyond simple script
coding--i.e. advanced actionscript, java, .NET3.5+, etc. (those are NOT
simple script coding).

Flash Catalyst so far seems to be a breaking point where I can make stuff
real, but I haven't seen examples of data manipulation yet.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] The state of UI/UX employment.

2010-02-22 Thread Dave Malouf
Susan,

I don't think this is an all or nothing thing. I am responding to
this thread and people reflexively condemning these types of job
descriptions. I used to be one of these people who would stand up on
the soapbox on challenge the requirement of visual even prototyping
skills along side interaction design skills that you listed.

Having dug deep into recent EDU changes this past year I have seen
students who do amazing work as conceptual and analytical designers
who also have the skills to visualize and execute their concepts into
prototypes. Are they doing production code? probably not, but they
aren't that far off and if I literally went across the street to
another program at my school they could. And I know that SCAD is not
alone in having programs of such breadth and depth.

So my message is more of a warning, than it is a proclamation of the
way it has to be. It is a complication for those of us (yup, me too!)
who after 17 years of doing conceptual and analytical design have not
really learned how to master prototyping at truly high fidelity of
both look and behavior.

if I was to make a prediction for the next 5 years, I would say that
the breaks are going to exist mostly between researcher, ux
designer/developers, and then business logic developers. but in many
cases the researcher and UX designer will be maintained through
visual and non-production prototyping and then there will be a UI
developer (using software as he model).

I also don't think this is going to be uniform across all design
theaters. Some will offer things the way they are now. Others will
come up with new formulas that fit their needs. The reality is that
there is no single way to break these down. So much of it is
contextual.

But what I didn't like in this thread is the de facto condemnation
and cynicism of this approach that is being attacked.

Hope that helps to clarify.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] The state of UI/UX employment.

2010-02-22 Thread Susan Doran
Dave

Great post, thanks -- really interesting perspective!

And as a professor you're actively shaping the market/profession, as well as
responding, as I suppose we all are :)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] How to Get People to Answer Honestly

2010-02-22 Thread Diana Wynne
Funny, I had the same queasy instinct as Lesia.

Don, from what you've described, the issue may not be encouraging an
honest state of mind, but whether respondents worry there will be
consequences for providing accurate information.

For example several years ago, my HMO invited me to participate in
genetic research. But I have no confidence this information won't be
used in the future to discriminate against me and perhaps deny
coverage, so I declined. (For the record, I'm not aware of any genetic
health issues, aside from not being very trusting.)

One thing you could do is to allow respondents to answer in a way that
guarantees their anonymity but still tracks unique responses.

You might also look at survey design best practices as opposed to UX
design resources. Accurate self-reporting is always a challenge,
whether the group members are required to participate or have the
ability to opt out.

to answer honestly. Why could it actually benefit them to answer
 honestly? Etc.
