Still, it's a good sign for recent grads - up until recently there's been
the experience catch-22 with jobs (most of those advertised up until now
have been for at least 3 years experience), so at least it gives those
recently out of school a chance to chalk up time, even if they have to do
hard slog with those 'massive skillz'

Hi all,

Thanks for the discussion so far - there have been some great suggestions,
and I''ll put a summary and linkthrough to here on the original post when I
next get the chance.
Cheers Dave for trying to pull back the discussion a few times - the
specific thread was what other non-UX disciplines (i.e. where people are
doing research as well as doing) had theories and knowledge we could tap
into.
(Though someone is welcome to split this thread off!)

From the thread so far:
@thomas - the comments here are exactly the reason why I thought the post
was a good idea, as Peter shows, there's a lot of thinking going on that
we're not aware of when we see the coffee table books.
@traci - thanks for mentioning your series! I'll definitely add that in
@andres - medicine - sounds fascinating. Are there any specific
resources/people that you know of?

Thanks
Vicky

[IxDA Discuss] What Other Fields Could UXers Steal From?

2009-09-29 Thread Vicky Teinaki
Hi all,

(Shameless plug maybe, but I'd love to tap into the collective IXDA
intelligence )
I recently wrote a post about other fields UXers could 'steal' from
http://johnnyholland.org/2009/09/28/good-ixders-borrow-great-ones-steal/

I've love other people's insight into other fields and texts that UXers
would do well to be aware of. (For example, I know that there is some pretty
cool stuff in performing arts like labannotation, but didn't have enough
information to put it in). From the comments so far I've already found out
that Ithere is much to be had in behavioural economics!

breathe once it's turned on - there's far more nuance going on with the

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Print Preview Page - Yes or No?

2009-03-11 Thread Vicky Teinaki
Sounds like a couple of issues here, one about context and the other about
semantics.

Context: is there enough information on the page to warrant people wanting
to specifically print it? Maybe having a Print button on a text-light page
is unnecessary. Also, some people's browsers bring up a printer dialog (with
preview option) before print anyway.

Semantics: if the page does warrant a button, instead of using Print, why
not use Printable Version or similar (as some newspapers do)? That way
users can choose to view the page as plain, and then print it as they would
with any other page from the web. I think this gets around the issue of
browser duplication as well.

Overall, I'm guessing there are two different types of users, who should
both be accommodated for:

   1. Those who print without previewing (just want to print, would just get
a pleasant surprise from your CSS sheet)
   2. Those who do preview (they take a bit more time, would potentially
   spot a Printable Version button)

(Though these are completely unsubstantiated!)

[IxDA Discuss] Using voice narration on sites

2008-02-14 Thread Vicky Teinaki
Hi all,

An example I've been given is Oil of Olay:

Anyone know of anything else to look at? Also, has anyone worked on sites
using narration?
I'm not entirely sure about using it right now though whether it is
appropriate will be easier to answer when the target market and goals etc.
are properly defined.

Thanks.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Defining UCD (and other things)

2008-01-19 Thread Vicky Teinaki
Hi all,

First post ever! Thought I'd weigh in about the tangents going on here, as
well as the tangent in the Mac Air thread
http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=24636.

What's becoming increasingly apparent is that career titles are changing and
blurring. For example, my degree is in 'Product Design' (not 'Industrial
Design'). This caused all sorts of issues as people ask - what is a product?
Essentially the names are the same, but from what I understand, the degree
was named that way (in 2002) to give a bit more scope as Industrial Design
sounded too much like designing machines. Another reason is that industrial
designers are increasingly having to think about systems rather than just
products e.g. having a carpet hiring system rather than just buying it.

Maybe there is a similar thing going on with Interaction Design vs.
interface design (or even web design). It implies a wider field - e.g. I
think I'd talk about interactions rather than interface with the Nintendo
Wii!

Also with questions as to whether Industrial Design is all about the
hardware and Interaction Design is about the software - most product
designers would start that way I think, as we are taught about objects and
form first. However, muddying the waters a bit are the terms 'experience
design' or 'design for experience' which have been floating around for the
last 10 or so years (was is suggested by Brenda Laurel? Would have to check
my books).

Basically the idea is that form and materials can only do so much - if you
think through the whole process of using it (and sometimes easy-to-use
doesn't give the most resonant experience - think automatic vs. manual
coffee machines!) you're far more likely to come up with something that
people will become attached to.

From what I know, industrial design-type people would probably not talk
about designing interactions unless there was software involved. However,
most up with the latest literature would think about the experience.

That would be I think where the Mac Air comes in - the industrial designers
would have been thinking about the experience of using it - approaching it,
opening it, exploring etc.

Ideally, a well managed product with an electronic component aligns the
experience of using the physical with the virtual, by using personas, mood
boards etc. Then the really amazing stuff happens ...
