role? We've discussed what music we listen to when working but I
sometimes find that listening to particular types of music influences
the mood of my designs. For example, listening to Mark Hollis' solo
album inspires a stark look, but this gets richer with David Sylvian,
and more 'out there' (rock and roll!) when listening to the
Stereophonics.

Depending on your definitions I get a lot of inspiration from
physical architecture. Walking and working in really nicely designed
buildings is wonderful, life affirming experience. The opposite...
well... isn't.

Bad buildings make me feel bad. Good buildings make me feel good. I
try and remember that when I'm building software. What I do can affect
how somebody feels. It can make or ruin somebody's day.

I also remember that being respected and winning awards doesn't
necessarily make for good design. For example, while I think Coventry
Cathedral is a wonderful building, having worked in some of Basil
Spence's other creations while they look nice... not nice to be in
9-5.

I'd be interested in seeing any examples of things designed by
IxDers with a particular influence behind.

The first mac I ever owned was sold to me by a friend/co-worrker etc. When I
first booted it up a dialog box appeared that said Bow down to the Almighty
Andrew and their was two buttons one said Amen and the other said No.
If I clicked No the system shut down. I think this teaching tactic belongs
in the inspirational art category.

I'm a avid musician - I've been making music longer than I've been
designing. For me there are many parallels between music and design.
Most of my musical 'career' has been dedicated to writing and
performing original material. I find the act of composition, or of
arranging someone else's material to fit the band I'm working with
to be very informative to my work as a designer. I've definitely
learned more about design from music than any other source.

Frank Lloyd Wright saw music as a metaphor for architecture. He
demanded all his students study and perform music. The immediacy of
musical performances forces one to focus attention and make split
second judgements about balance, aesthetics, movement, timing, and so
much more. I don't think I would have become a designer if I wasn't
first a musician.

Strong influences on my current work include backlit indicator lights,
jewel boxes with hidden little drawers and compartments, international
signs and icons, telephones, and two-way radios. Nothing I can show
yet, apologies for the tease,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Inspirations from art

2009-05-04 Thread dave malouf
First, I want to say that my recent post on JohnnyHolland.org
(http://johnnyholland.org/magazine/2009/04/function-to-connection/)
relates to this in so far as to looking to art as the source/soul of
design.

More personally, I have looked a lot to traditional craft, art
design by some native cultures. People may look to the Bauhaus, but
before I knew of the BH I was inspired by Japanese craft,
architecture, and art. It's mixture of minimalism with naturalism
has always appealed to me.

But other artists for palette and texture and use of metaphor have
also inspired: Chagall Picasso have been long time faves of mine
whom I return to over and over for inspiration. This isn't
inspiration to derive direct translation into my work, but for the
possible and the beautiful.

2009-05-04 Thread Stephen Holmes
I'm aware that different countries call there mobile phones (as we
call them here in Australia) different names.

In the USA it seems to be a cell phone, in parts of Asia where
I've worked it is a handy phone.

Any others?

I need this for a way of a user differentiating mobile phone numbers
from land-line phone numbers.

thanks

Stephen
