Re: [IxDA Discuss] Ubiquitous computing -- Pulse livescribe smart pen

2008-05-18 Thread Rob Tannen
I did receive my Livescribe Pulse pen. Overall works very well and
has a unique user interface feature (you can draw your own controls
for navigating the pen's interface).

BUT - and this may sound trivial, but its not - the pen lacks a clip
so it rolls around too much and there is no easy way to record
hands-free.

Here's my initial impressions/review:

I ordered one of these pens a few weeks ago. Will do a review when I get it.

Unfortunately the customer service behind the product has not been
altogether impressive with multiple launch dates (January,
March), but no products shipped. I'm supposed to get my pre-launch
order (from six weeks ago) sometime this week. I still believe it's
a valuable product, especially because it provides binaural microphones
for realistic audio recording - but am losing my patience.

I talked to someone at LiveScribe and the pens are shipping now. :)
Hopefully the wait won't be much longer!

[IxDA Discuss] Ubiquitous computing -- Pulse livescribe smart pen

2008-05-12 Thread Oleh Kovalchuke
The pen can record both drawings/notes and sound simultaneously (and links
them to each other). It is also hand-held computer, paper calculator,
translator, paper piano player (whoo-hoo! -- at last), and other yet to be
designed paper utilities/games:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2JGOSF9G8c

1. I wish I had it, when I was student, furiously taking lecture notes,
trying to keep up with the lecturer. With this pen you don't have to rewind
the sound recording -- touch the note and hear the part of the lecture you
have been listening to, while writing the note.

2. This can be good tool for prototyping and recording rationale during
brainstorming/sketching -- for collaborative brainstorming it would need
direct real-time output to tablet/laptop/projector.

3. $150.
