Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Re: OSGeo Board Election 2010 Results

2010-09-03 Thread Tyler Mitchell
Hi Tim,
I'm sure we'll talk lots more about your questions shortly but a couple things
while I have a few minutes...

I don't recall the board list requiring approval. Note there are a couple
other lists with the term 'board' in them I think, maybe you chose to join one
lof those accidentally. I will double check for you though.

It's worth noting on the discuss list that *EVERYONE* is welcome to join the
board list and participate in discussions there:
http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/board

There is also a rarely used private board alias used that one of us with
systems access will have to add you guys to.

The board meets once a month in IRC. To vote on some items/motions they will
also flip over to use a skype call to vote by voice when needed. The president
acts as chair and I usually take the minutes and try to rally any stragglers.

Meeting agendas and minutes are all posted on the wiki:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Board

That's probably enough for now and any time you can put into the face to face
meeting will be very useful too. A few scheduling/announcement items have
fallen through the crack this past month as a couple of us have been on
extended holidays. Sorry for not laying this stuff out sooner!

Best wishes, see you soon.
Tyler

[OSGeo-Discuss] Re: OSGeo Board Election 2010 Results

2010-09-03 Thread Tim Schaub

All-

I'm excited to start serving as a new board member. Thanks for the votes.

Current members-

Are there any details new members should know?

I've just put in a subscription request for the Board list
(http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/board/). Looks like that is pending
approval.

I've also just come across the wiki page about the F2F meeting
(http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Face_to_Face_Meeting_Barcelona_2010).  I
regret that I didn't know about this earlier, as I would have made
different arrangements. As it is, I am leaving early Sunday and had
made plans for Saturday. I put my name down and can try to make it for
a good part of the meeting (or all).

Let me know if there is anything else we should be aware of as new board
members.

Thanks,
Tim

Paul,
thanks again for organizing the board elections. It is great that we
could get this done in time prior to FOSS4G so that the new board can
meet there in real life. This promises to become a very productive meeting.

Howard, Ari,
thanks to both of you for serving on the board for two full years and we
hope to continue to see you give advice to the OSGeo board in your
specific domains. We will lack the European and education background of
Ari and miss Howard's direct engagement from our systems committee.

Tim and Daniel,
welcome to the board and be prepared for lots of activities in the
coming months. We need to look into funding and acquire new and more
sponsors. The local chapters of OSGeo are developing great but many
would like to see a closer relation to the OSGeo Foundation. The public
geodata committee is developing interesting ideas around cataloging that
could turn into a new OSGeo service and last but not least we will want
to improve the incubation process to better serve the projects and the
users.

All,
thanks all for trusting me with another term on the board of directors
and I am excited to get going with the new team. See (hopefully most of
you) in Barcelona.

Best regards,
Arnulf.

OSGeo,

Here are the final results from the 2010 voting for the open seats of
the OSGeo Board of Directors. There were four seats open and they have
been filled by, in alphabetical order:

* Arnulf Christl
* Daniel Morissette
* Frank Warmerdam
* Tim Schaub

Thanks to everyone for running. The voting participation was 82% and
there were no tie scores to arbitrate.
Your complete resulting Board is:

* Arnulf Christl
* Chris Schmidt
* Daniel Morissette
* Frank Warmerdam
* Geoff Zeiss
* Jeff McKenna
* Markus Neteler
* Ravi Kumar
* Tim Schaub

We will complete the 2010 election process with the selection of new
Charter Members in September after FOSS4G.

And one more..
http://grass.osgeo.org/community/commercial.php

IMHO the visibility of
  http://www.osgeo.org/search_profile
needs to be improved (perhaps also using a different link name?).

Eg.,
  http://www.google.com/search?q=osgeo+commercial+support
does not lead to above page (easily).

The Marketing Committee has been working on a planned overhaul of the
homepage(Landing Page). Here's a preview of the idea

I'll note the link in question is right in the middle of the page.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Commercial support (Company profile improvement options)

2010-09-03 Thread Alex Mandel
That is indeed tricky. Since support includes both community and paid
but support is the more likely term used in searching we might need to
rethink the navigation strategy to have a page specific to "Support that
mentions both and links to the service providers and the other forms of
support.

Thanks,
Alex

a link section for past projects.
   * Inclusion of the prospective company logo on the profile page.
   * A list of company partners.
   * It would be real nice as a company owner for example, to be able to link directly to
a OSGEO "support" registry
 page. I think a system like this would keep things updated regularly. I
keep forgetting the entry is even in
 there for my interests because I don't touch it enough.

Some possible enhancements to such a business registry:

   * A means to link back to the prospective companies information pages
directly, then the information only needs to
 be built once. Is there a Company Resume data format standard for this
already?)
   * A method of standardizing the data constructs for such an information page
so that the same company profile could
 be used for other similar discovery mechanisms like the proprietary side
of the equation. Who has experience with
 Oracle and PostGIS, etc.

Is this sounding like it does to me, like a Project unto itself, like LiveDVD? Such an enhancement should be able to be
populated by the existing data initially, and then expanded upon by each business. Is there some similar project
already out there that might be leveraged for the same tasks?

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Commercial support

2010-09-03 Thread Chris Puttick
Well, while we're mentioning specific companies... OA Digital
(http://oadigital.net) provides assistance and support on a wide range of OSGeo
solution components. Even support for solutions still encumbered with legacy
stuff.

Actually a Google search in your native language or with your country of
residence appended for " support"
should get you a whole bunch of people who can help. And help to the level that
only, for example, Oracle can help with Oracle stuff i.e. there is more support
out there for open source solutions than there are for closed ones.

Regards

Chris

[OSGeo-Discuss] Commercial support

2010-09-03 Thread Sebastian E. Ovide
Hi Guys,

I generalize here a question that I have posted in the Mapserver-user
mailing list, as it concerns the whole OSGeo world and not only MapServer.

Some companies choose commercial software such as Oracle MapViewer, Oracle
Spatial etc.. because they offer the security of commercial support. So if
the companies have any problem configuring it (or any other problem) they
will use the support that they have paid for.

IT engineers in general can learn for them self and with the help of the
community support (mailing list) they are able to solve virtually any
problem. And the OSGEO mailing lists are the perfect examples of that.

Nevertheless, CEOs and boards of directors still need some kind of security
and they prefer to use software that provide commercial support.

Are you guys aware of companies that provide commercial support for OSGeo ?

thanks,
