Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] GIS Data Template for Cities, Towns and Communities (e.g Chigago)

2010-10-19 Thread George Silva
I'm involved at the moment with building large cadastral models for cities.
This is a subject that always interested me, and I guess we could gather
around a few people to work on models, example data and example software.

This would be a great initiative to show counties (cities in Brazil - I'm
not sure about the administrative equivalent) that OSS can help them in an
effective way.

Actually, this common models idea is around for a long time (cadastral,
oil&gas, environment, etc). If anyone is still interested I can give some
contributions.

Noli,

Maybe I am too focused on SDI and geo-portals to see your point. This
is just a simple list of download links on an html page. There is no search
capability, no indexing, no metadata, etc. But on the other hand it is simple
and I was able to find the City of Chicago GIS Data page with a quick Google
search.

Hi,

I think this might be a good GIS data template for Cities,Towns and
Communities[1], if you working in councils, government, NGO's, etc.
and planning to share your GIS data to rest of the world.

http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/doit/supp_info/gis_data.html

These data can be easily converted to Spatialite and PostGIS.

Anybody has better GIS data template idea than this?

If you have any GIS data to share probably you can send us the URL and
discuss the advantage of your GIS data - Template as well.

Thanks.

Yes, the OL class is on github. We'll probably add it to OL trunk later,
when some other issues are resolved.

There is also an OpenScales class that works in the same fashion. We'll
publish it in the following weeks when some sync issues are solved (and
we found enough spare time :s).

That's correct. The server is implemented in pure python, and the
library that interpolates data, in C.

It's currently not possible to run the server in a WSGI container,
although I think mod_python would be more suitable given the nature of
the server.

Please add the issue on Github. Any other bugs/ideas are welcome.
Also any contribution would be appreciated too.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that we have put an Acid Maps demo online.

Sorry about the 2 week delay, but we discovered that heatmaps were
acting 'funny', so we had to change that interpolation algorithm.

Hi,

I'm trying to find the definition of "Acid Maps" or some sense as to why
it was named that way and Google/Wikipedia don't help. Any pointers ?
Or is it just the name of a web server ?

Acid Maps is just the name of the project we choose. As to why it's like
that we have a few arguments, but you can let your imagination fly and
find yours :-)

The processes involved are called "heatmaps", "isolines" and "Voronoi",
but they don't have to do anything directly with the project name.
Thanx Sebastian. I thought this was some sort of map type since I see
you created your own OL class (OpenLayers.Layer.Acid). I guess that
type is only in your GitHub repo and not on OL trunk right ?

I've been calling this type of thing "Thermal" mapping for a few years
now. I suppose "Intensity" mapping would work too.

Hello Shirisha,

If you open a Command Prompt window, then CD to the ms4w folder, you can
execute apache-install.bat there, and you can see any errors that are
reported.

By the way, please use the MS4W email list for MS4W questions from now

this osgeo-discuss list is not for specific software questions.
