Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Renaming FOSS4G

2015-10-07 Thread Stephen Woodbridge

+1 on the less is more and on renaming.

Marketing is about establishing a brand (among other things).

It is clear who owns the OSGeo brand.

Who owns the FOSS4G brand belong to?

what is the added value of supporting this brand? and potentially
diluting or confusing the OSGeo brand?

Many brands have tag lines. Maybe adding a tag line would add to OSGeo
whatever people feel FOSS4G has that OSGeo does not.

OSGeo - Bringing free open source geospatial software to the world!

Or whatever is appropriate.

When explaining FOSS4G to people outside our community you need to use:

"international conference for Free and Open Source Software for
GeoSpatial (FOSS4G), presented by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation
(OSGeo)."

vs

"international Open Source Geospatial (OSGeo) conference"

This is a good question to put to the charter members for a vote at some

Also the exponential multiplier effect of having both software and educational

Some MOOCs don’t just fade away, they transform. One former MOOC, Del Mar
College’s Introduction to Geospatial Technology using
QGIS,
is now a series of five self-paced
classes. These are offered by
GeoAcademy, an “independent consortium of
GIS educators dedicated to promoting the use of open source software for
geospatial technology education.” Lead instructor Phil Davis says that there
are currently about 500 students who have enrolled in the courses. This isn’t a
massive number, but this reflects the trend towards open online courses with
self-paced content, like the Discover Spatial
collection.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Renaming FOSS4G

2015-10-07 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

Fun thread to follow. throwing my thoughts out . . .

I think the bigger issue is the word “change” in the discussions. It’s not
about changing anything. It’s about classifying items better than before.
Nothing is going away label-wise, or really being changed either.

For example, you can say we’re putting on a OSGeo conference, and you can say,
that is a FOSS4G project. I wouldn’t anticipate either of these labels going
by the way side any time soon, but rather the desire being there for them to be
used more specifically than they were before.

+1 to modify usage of terms.
