Just to add to the options we 8theoretically) have:

With an upgrade from mailman-2 to mailman-3 we could also have a
searchable archive.
See for example
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/
which looks much more modern than mailman-2 on OSGeo.

Let me suggest to avid too much fragmentation. This will not help to
get people more engaged.

Which one did you use? Your user name is "madi".
(the "Wiki-Madi" thing was only the temporary migration name - and the
migration got stuck which should be fixed now).

[OSGeo-Discuss] GRASS GIS 8.0.0 released

2022-02-03 Thread Markus Neteler via Discuss
GRASS GIS 8.0.0 released

Overview of changes

After more than 3 year of development the *first stable release GRASS GIS
8.0.0* is available. Efforts have concentrated on making the user
experience even better, providing many new useful additional
functionalities to modules and further improving the graphical user
interface.

*Breaking news: new graphical user interface with entirely rewritten
startup sequence!*

This re-establishes user experience compatibility with QGIS and other
connected software packages.

The GRASS GIS 8.0.0 release provides more than 1,400 fixes and improvements
 with respect to the
release 7.8.6.

With the introduction of the semantic label raster metadata class, the
temporal database was modified to version 3. Hence, to be able to read and
process GRASS 7.x space-time datasets, users will be prompted to run
t.upgrade. If users want to read newly created space-time datasets back in
GRASS 7.x, they can run t.downgrade.
Launching the software

The user experience of the graphical user interface has been completely
rewritten: no more clumsy selection screens - just enter the menu system
directly!

And on command line, GRASS GIS now starts versionless, i.e. as grass.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] geospatial algorithm to create area midway boundaries from lines ?

2020-03-06 Thread Markus Neteler
Hi Karsten,

With v.type you can then change the type "line" to "boundary" and
eventually place centroid(s) with v.centroid to complete closed boundaries
plus centroid to topologically correct areas.

Best,
Markus

I did some efforts years ago:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GRASS_Incubation_Progress

From my point of view (as PSC chair) it was a very demanding but
absolute necessary exercise for us to review the source code (close to
1 million LOC), the community health, infrastructure migration into
OSGeo, project management structures and more. The incubation process
was kindly supported by our incubation mentors Norman Vine and Arnulf
Christl.

You can use for example GRASS GIS for processing data coming in as batch.
GRASS GIS itself uses GDAL for te data exchange.
We use it in our satellite data processing chain but it can process
any kind of geospatial data.
Furthermore, full time series processing is supported, see [1].

Yes, maybe only the first x line should be shown.

Another nice feature of the old block was to jump from one to the next

Not sure if that could be ported as well?

[OSGeo-Discuss] GRASS GIS 7.4.0 released

2018-02-01 Thread Markus Neteler
*We are pleased to announce the GRASS GIS 7.4.0 release*

*What's new in a nutshell*

After a bit more than one year of development the *new update release **GRASS
GIS 7.4.0* is available. It provides *more than 480 stability fixes and
improvements* compared to the previous stable version 7.2. An *overview* of
the *new features* in the 7.4 release series is available at New Features
in GRASS GIS 7.4 .

Efforts have concentrated on making the user experience even better,
providing many small, but useful additional functionalities to modules and
further improving the graphical user interface. Users can now directly
download pre-packaged demo data locations in the GUI startup window.
Several modules were migrated from addons to the core GRASS GIS package and
the suite of tools for ortho-rectification was re-implemented in the new
GRASS 7 GUI style. In order to support the treatment of massive datasets,
new compression algorithms were introduced and NULL (no-data) raster files
are now also compressed by default. For a detailed overview, see the list
of new features .
As a stable release series, 7.4.x enjoys long-term support.
*Binaries/Installer download:*

   - winGRASS 7.4.0: 32bit standalone installer

*About GRASS GIS*

The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (https://grass.osgeo.org/),
commonly referred to as GRASS GIS, is an Open Source Geographic Information
System providing powerful raster, vector and geospatial processing
capabilities in a single integrated software suite. GRASS GIS includes
tools for spatial modeling, visualization of raster and vector data,
management and analysis of geospatial data, and the processing of satellite
and aerial imagery. It also provides the capability to produce
sophisticated presentation graphics and hardcopy maps. GRASS GIS has been
translated into about twenty languages and supports a huge array of data
formats. It can be used either as a stand-alone application or as backend
for other software packages such as QGIS and R geostatistics. It is
distributed freely under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
GRASS GIS is a founding member of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation
(OSGeo).

+1 for Astrid!

She is very active in the FOSSGIS e.V., OSGeo and Mapbender,
dedicating a lot of time to the organization of community events and
(big) conferences by leading much of the needed efforts. Without
Astrid and her balanced view of the community, many things would
simply not happen.

I fully support her nomination.

Did you check "gpredict" (under GPL):

"Gpredict is a real-time satellite tracking and orbit prediction
application. It can track an unlimited number of satellites and
display their position and other data in lists, tables, maps, and
polar plots (radar view). Gpredict can also predict the time of future
passes for a satellite, and provide you with detailed information
about each pass. "

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Tales from a Benevolent Dictator

2016-05-16 Thread Markus Neteler
Hi,

concerning Software Quality Assurance Metrics, some notes on the GRASS
GIS project on which such software metrics were applied in the past.

Here some selected papers which we published on the matter:
* Di Penta, M, M. Neteler, G. Antoniol, E. Merlo, 2005: A
Language-Independent Software Renovation Framework. Journal of Systems
and Software, 77(3), pp. 225-240.
http://staff.rcost.unisannio.it/mdipenta/papers/jss2005.pdf

* Antoniol, G., M. Di Penta, and M. Neteler, 2003. Moving to smaller
libraries via clustering and genetic algorithms. In CSMR 2003, 7th
IEEE European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering,
Proc. IEEE omputer Society, 307-316.
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.58.988&rep=rep1&type=pdf

* Di Penta, M., M. Neteler, G. Antoniol and E. Merlo, 2002. Knowledge
Based Library Refactoring for an Open Source Project. IEEE Working
Conference on Reverse Engineering WCRE, Oct. 28 - Nov. 1, Richmond,
Virginia, USA. Proc. IEEE Computer Society, pp. 319-328.
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.4.4165&rep=rep1&type=pdf

Using an automated approach, we identified cloned code (which easily
happens in a software project which started decades back in 1982),
reducing the overall code while reaching better code quality.
In addition, we refactored all source code from K&R C notation to ANSI
C (given roughly 1 million lines of code, the SVN commit took a few
hours back then :-).

Cheers,
Markus

Some time ago this table was developed:

"Matrix3" (here indeed a more recent copy of that table):

We may want to take that as a starting point.

Additionally the work by Steininger comes to mind. See also

You may want to set the mime types in SVN on a per file basis.
We have a helper script for that, see

https://trac.osgeo.org/grass/browser/grass-addons/tools/module_svn_propset.sh

It accepts wildcards as parameter and will assign the SVN mime type to
all file types it knows about (quite a few).

[OSGeo-Discuss] New stable release: GRASS GIS 7.0.0

2015-02-22 Thread Markus Neteler
Press release

The GRASS GIS Development team has announced the release of the new
major version GRASS GIS 7.0.0. This version provides many new
functionalities including spatio-temporal database support, image
segmentation, estimation of evapotranspiration and emissivity from
satellite imagery, automatic line vertex densification during
reprojection, more LIDAR support and a strongly improved graphical
user interface experience. GRASS GIS 7.0.0 also offers significantly
improved performance for many raster and vector modules: "Many
processes that would take hours now take less than a minute, even on
my small laptop!" explains Markus Neteler, the coordinator of the
development team composed of academics and GIS professionals from
around the world. The software is available for Linux, MS-Windows, Mac
OSX and other operating systems.

geospatial data, and the processing of satellite and aerial imagery.
It also provides the capability to produce sophisticated presentation
graphics and hardcopy maps. GRASS GIS has been translated into about
twenty languages and supports a huge array of data formats. It can be
used either as a stand-alone application or as backend for other
software packages such as QGIS and R geostatistics. It is distributed
freely under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). GRASS
GIS is a founding member of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation
(OSGeo).

While I am not too keen on reaching 1000 OSGeo lists :p perhaps have
yet another one which could be called "projects@..." (not yet taken).

*GRASS GIS 6.4.4 released*
http://grass.osgeo.org

We are pleased to announce the release of a new stable version of GRASS
GIS. This release fixes issues discovered in the 6.4.3 version of the
program and adds a number of new features. This release includes over 340
updates to the source code since 6.4.3. As a stable release series, the 6.4
line will enjoy long-term support and incremental enhancements while
preserving backwards-compatibility with the entire GRASS 6 line.

*Key improvements* of the GRASS GIS 6.4.4 release include a complete
rewrite of the r.li suite, major fixes for buffers (v.buffer, now based on GEOS
library ), major speedup for some vector
modules (v.rast.stats and v.in.gpsbabel), various fixes for the portable
wxPython based graphical interface (wxNVIZ, Location Wizard or Cartographic
Composer), enabled Cairo driver for MS-Windows, and more user message
translations.

I am not too familiar with our Drupal installation but found this
(incomplete?) Wiki page explaining the roles:

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Drupal_Portal#CMS_Permissions
"The role defines what a user is allowed to do and what she gets to
see. WebCom (url) votes for users to get roles."

I guess you need to make a formal request to get into an editor role.
