satisfying and you are left with the knowledge that, after years of
trying to prtetend that this crap is worth persisting with, tomorrow
you can go out and but something that really works!

Ahem.
The correct spelling of visualize is visualize, as in the Oxford
English dictionary. 'Visualise' is a faux-French bastardization.

I had the same problem, which was a conflict over the use of the port.
The reply below cured it (or at least partially, since after I removed
the conflict I discovered that 6.5 is extremely unstable! Try 6.3.

That solved it - now running happily on 9079.
One question left - the server now seems to start always on 9079 and I
have checked that it is registered in the settings but the web browser
interface still opens on 9000. How do I tell it about the change?

Still it introduced me to Radiotime, so every cloud has a silver lining.

Having changed the slimserver port to cope with conflicts on 9000 I now
find that the browser interface still points initially to 9000 and I
have to change it manually. How can I make it point to 9079 when it
initializes?

It seems the tray utility doesn't read the prefs file, because that
clearly says 9079.
Intrigued by the idea of browsing to http://music. Is that some kind of
variable set at system level?

Thanks for the reply.
I'm afraid I've uninstalled multiple times, the current version I have
installed is 6.5.1 and as far as I know, I don't have any plug-ins at
all.

Thanks but I'm afraid it's not the Squeezeboxes' fault. There simply is
no longer a Slimserver for them to contact.
