I can't help I'm afraid apart from Saying that having run LMS in Windows
for a number of years I got frustrated with the occasional loss of
settings and other glitches that I have switched to piCoreplayer which
seems a lot more stable.

I second this - I use Squeezelite-X on a daily basis in my home office
coupled with Material. It is an excellent way to access LMS.

What are you using to update your tags? In mp3tag there is an option to
not change the modified date when adding/updating tags.

What is your LMS running on? For Windows 10, Squeezelite-X (available in
the Store) acts as both controller and player

If you are already connecting to your server via VPN then stop port

You could look at Crashplan. This allows you to back up in a variety of
ways including backing up to a remote drive which could be at a friend's
house or your work. It is a free service unless you select their cloud
offering. If you have a lot of data you can seed a backup at home and
then resume
