On the other hand you could play the same stream in those additional
zones with just the SB3.
The only catch is that often AVR/amps limit zone playback to only
analog inputs, so using the SB3 you would have your main listening area
via digital out and zone 1 via analog out.

I just ordered a 2 TB Vortexbox Appliance. I will be connecting it to a
SB Classic which will in turn be connected to an Integra DTR 40.2
receiver. I have multiple zones connected to the DTR 40.2. The DTR
40.2 is capable of using 2 different sources to 2 different zones
simultaneously.

That's right. If they are different streams, then you need one SB for
