I have a suspension that some of the music files on my hd were dl'd at
64kbps but don't know how to check it. What do I look for and how?

you're looking at lots of files, I'd install mp3tag. Then open these
directories in mp3tag and sort on bitrate columnn. add a custom column
If I was looking to examine the bitrate of a bunch of files, I'd
consider using a tool like mp3tag on my Windows box to sort/examine my
entire library at once. If you're on a different platform, I'm sure
