Too bad they didn't put it on the remote :).

[slim] Re: play request goes to save playlist

2006-10-03 Thread ceejay

First, you should upgrade the software, the latest nightly 6.5.1 is
significantly improved over what you have. I agree it probably won't
fix your problem, but do it anyway - it ensures you are on the same
page as people who may be trying to help you.

Second, it sounds like a problem with your remote. Obvious first step -
change the batteries!

If that doesn't work, you might want to investigate the hypothesis that
the play button on your remote is faulty. Look up the custom.map
feature and map another button that you don't use very often to have
the play function.

If that doesn't work, report back and someone will suggest something
else!

I checked the song titles in Finder and they are all correct, though I
have now removed the number that preceded the track names in each
song's file (seemed to be the track order number). Incidentally,
whereas I thought this was only happening with my Chinese-language
tracks, it is in fact happening to all my tracks, regardless of the
language that their track name is in. All are listed as 1 in the

[slim] Album year vs track year (is there already an IDv3 tag for this?)

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

My collection has a number of Greatest Hits type albums.

I'm a but fussy with my music tags, and when I see a track I like to
know whan that track was released, and not necessarily when the album
was released. As such, I edit all my tags from compilation or best-of
albums and correct the tag to show year of track (not year of album
release).

I know some might think it a bit sad, but it's just the way I like to
have it working.

Slim doesn't seem to like it. It might just be the whole
various-artists problem that I've not correctly configured around yet,
or it might be that Slim sees an album with the same artist but with
loads of different year tags and gets upset. either way, Slim (quite
correctly) doesn't know which year to display for the album because,
according to my tagging, the album was released across a number of
different years :)

Basically - is there already provision in the IDv3 tag to allow for

Album year - e.g. the year the compilation was released
vs
Track year - e.g. the date the track was originally released

If such a thing already exists, does anyone use it, and how is your
Slim configured to deal with it?

Cheers!
Dan.

[slim] SlimServer 6.5.1 - incorrect artist count

2006-10-03 Thread chris . mason

Hi all,

I've been using slimserver 6.5.0 (official release) on Windows XP (SP2)
for a few weeks now, and noticed that under Browse Albums, the artist
count doesn't match the count on the home page. I upgraded to the
latest 6.5.1 build last night to see if this behaviour persisted, and
it does:

On the home page, I have 113 artists listed, but in the Browse Albums
view, I have 465. Reading through other forum posts, I see there was a
bug logged for this for 6.5b
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3806), and its marked as
resolved...I suspect it isn't resolved

I'm running:
SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 10130 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

Anybody else seeing this behaviour?

Chris.

[slim] Re: V6.5 huge FileCache

2006-10-03 Thread rbdavis

Hi - i've been away but have just caught up on this thread.

I have album artwork for 90% of the tracks in my iTunes library, so I
wonder if that could be the cause?

Actually I did used to have an odd bug with the last version of
SlimServer - it would display album artwork for some tracks but not
others that had artwork in iTunes (and the difference may have been due
to graphic file type).

I of course welcome a cache if it speeds up SlimServer, however if it
is is intended to be this big, is there a way to select a target
drive/directory? I suspect many users would also want to be able to
enable/disable the cache. Or perhaps we could have the option to
enable/disable album art if that stops the cache getting so big.

[slim] Re: SlimServer 6.5.1 - incorrect artist count

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

Could it be related to the various artists functionality that has been
introduced in the later versions?

As in - SS might be listing 113 unique artists (including one artist
called Various Artists at home page, but if you have compilation
albums, then each artist may be listed separately in the albums view
(so Various Artists becomes 350-odd separate artists).

That would rely on you having a high percentage of compilations though,
so perhaps not relevant to the symptoms you see.

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

There've been all sorts of headaches with the new functionality :( I
know that the official response from Support is that Slim no longer
'guesses' and now relies on 'proper tagging' but it's a change from
previous versions that confused plenty of people :) :)

There are a couple of settings you can play with to see if your library
statistics change... I don't have access to the interface now, but
there's a setting (probably under Bahaviour where you can choose to
group compilations separately by each artist vs group compilations
under same artist (or something like that - I'm sure someone else
herre will be able to correct me, and give you the proper
place/setting).

If the library stats change when you play with this setting, and -
importantly - correctly reflect what you should have, then let us know
as there is a new tag you may need to add to your library to make slim
deal with the albums correctly.

[slim] Re: Sonos-like remote?

2006-10-03 Thread rbdavis

To put in my X cents worth, I currently use SlimServer to listen to my
iTunes music library on several PCs. I have been taking a while to
consider my upgrade path to a 5-room hardware solution.

I'd like to keep using SlimServer because I think its a solid solution
and has a great community, but the web interface and the
SoftSqueeze/SqueezeBox single line of text interfaces are too painful
compared to, for example, the iPod or iTunes UIs. I'm therefore
regretfully considering Sonos over SqueezeBox because of their remote.

(The other factor for me is that my server PC is quite slow and it
seems that Sonos takes more of the load off the PC. But i guess I can
solve that by upgrading to a NAS that runs SlimServer at some point).

So SlimDevices - if you announced a remote with simple and fast
navigation using buttons and a screen, artwork display, instant control
from switch on, close integration with SlimServer features, etc. you'd
bring me back from the 'other side' in an instant...! ;)

[slim] 6.5 post upgrade query

2006-10-03 Thread Richard Scales

I just installed 6.5 over 6.31 working well
at present though I have noticed a couple of things that I have tried to
resolve but the resolution has yet to materialise!

Firstly, in both web and player interface if
I look for Robert Plant he no longer appears under R but Robert
Plant is listed under P (for Plant).

Robert just about everyone else appears under R
(Palmer for example).

I use Tag Rename and have looked at the Artist
field and they are formatted (as far as I can tell) the same for both Roberts
that is FirstnamespaceSecondname however, they are now
appearing in different places.

Where should I look further? I am assuming at this
stage that it will be in the handling of the tags and I should therefore look
at the tags in more detail which I will!

The second observation is that when I list All
Songs for any given artist, I am sure that they used to be listed in
alphabetical order they no longer appear like that instead it
looks like the appear to be listed in one long list album after album.

I have stared at all the settings but the answer
eludes me still any pointers gratefully received.

Kind regards

Richard Scales

[slim] Where did bitrate limiting go?

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

I've got my SB running via the ethernet cable now. In theory, there
should be no worries about bandwidth any more. There are only a few
devices on the ethenet LAN, and the hubs/switches are both gigabit
capable (to service my fileservers).

So I want to remove bitrate limiting or at least set it to highest
value.

But I can't find the setting anymore :(

I encountered it when I had problems with AlienBBC a long time ago, and
I turned it down to AlienBBC working... LAME is indeed installed on my
server in the correct place. But I can't even find the part that says
LAME appears to be installed correctly. I'm sure it used to say that
somewhere in the server settings?! I went through each of the server
setting tabs and used my browser to search for the words bitate
limit and LAME. But I didn't find what I was looking for.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Cheers!

[slim] Slim 6.5.1 and MusicIP problems

2006-10-03 Thread chris . mason

I upgraded to the latest 6.5.1 build last night (SlimServer Version:

I have MusicIP server installed and running, and everything worked
correctly under 6.5 (official release). If I switch off Use
MusicMagic, and rescan, my library reappears. I've checked my MIP
configuration, and that everything is running, but whenever I switch
Use MusicMagic back on and rescan, I get no music.

Anybody else see this behaviour?

Re: [slim] Another 6.5 Missing Songs Problem (solved, for me)

2006-10-03 Thread Chip Hart
Chip Hart wrote:

As my wife says, I'm obsessed, so I spent a little while last
night until I came up with what seems like a successful brute
force method for finding the problem for our missing music under
6.51.

Our music is already divided into a hierarchy (his vs. hers
and then by genre), so I just browsed into the music folders and
hit Play on each one and watched the log until I found errors.
The goal was to effectively add the tracks until I figured out
where it died.

Note: running the global scan and using d_scan still didn't
produce any output (except to note that it started). It only
works as I add directories. Am I missing something?

After a while, I finally found a track (Therion:Vovin:Draconian
Trilogy, for those keeping score) whose tags were clearly
causing a problem. Not only would all my other CLI tag tools
barf upon trying to read/open it, but trying to add it three
times in succession while working on it caused mysql to crash!

Finally, I decided just to remove it and...bing! I haven't done
a full rescan, but it looks like ALL our music is there.

And - ironically - the album art works now. It makes me wonder
if the folks who are missing album are also missing tracks and
don't realize it?

This method, while gross, may make it possible for some folks to
track down the offending file(s).

Try the following (you will be prompted for your password):

Code:

  sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

which will edit the list of sources (download locations) for the
apt-get package manager. You will need to add the following line:

Code:

  deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main

Also, find the two lines that end in 'multiverse' and delete the # from
the start of each line (if there is one). Then save the file.
Then type the following:

Code:

  apt-get update
  apt-get install slimserver

I know you've said you are sure the SB3 is talking to your router but
...

If you haven't, set the router SSID to something other than the default
and make sure that's the SSID the SB3 shows when you select the wireless

[slim] internet radio buffering question

2006-10-03 Thread rme

I am trying to figure out what the use of radio station buffering
seconds is in server settings/network/radio station buffering seconds.

Does it buffer data to slimserver from the internet to help with
internet download latency or buffer seconds onto a squeezebox from the
slimserver to help with lan/wireless latency locally?

I don't have any problems with lan speed, therefore would like to set
it to 1 or 0 if it only buffers between slimserver and sb and avoid
station change delays if that is the case.

However, would like to take advantage of internet latency buffering if
that is what it is really doing.

Thanks for your help

Thanks Jeff, maybe its a related issue..?

I've not got any problems with accented characters coming from MIP, but
I used to have problems. I spent some time investigating this and
discovered the issue lay with file and directory names (at least on
Windows) that had accented names. I figured out that the MIP API or
SlimServer were not correctly passing/receiving file/directory names
with extended characters, which meant that when Slim looked for the
files on the disk, it couldn't find them.

I then decided to just remove the extended characters from the file and
folder names, keeping the track name tags intact with their accented
characters. This has worked perfectly ever since.

 Chris.

Getting rid of the extended characters would certainly be a work-around
to that issue. However, I actually have quite a bit of latin music and
Classical music in my library ... both of which tend to have quite a
bit of extended ASCII characters in the names ... so it would be quite
an undertaking to clean up the file and folder names. Additionally, I
use MusicBrainz for tagging and renaming ... and it always uses
'proper' spelling with accented characters. Not really a viable option
for me.

I had heard that the issue was to be addressed in 6.5.1 ... but since I
can't complete a scan, I can't tell if that's true yet.

Yeah, I agree its not an ideal solution, and not one I really wanted to
implement, but it was the only way I was going to get my classical
music to appear properly in Slim.

If I recall, I used tagrename or mp3tagger (can't remember which) to
change the files/folder names. There was a simple macro which you
could run over all the file names so it wasn't too onerous a task.

Are the laptops running a DHCP server, by any chance?

The router, by default, will have it's own DCHP server and should be
asigning an IP to the squeezebox. But if laptops are also running
their own DHCP server, then maybe that is confusing things.

In that case, perhaps the laptop is giving the SB a new IP address as
soon as you connect the wi-fi enabled laptop and you can no longer
connect to SB via the router?

[slim] I want SS to ignore TPE2 / Album Artist tags?

2006-10-03 Thread Iznotgold

Is there a way to get Slim Server to ignore TPE2 / Album Artist tags?

I have had lots of 'Artists' disappear from my listings. From the
investigations I've made - what appears to have happened is that I had
WMP set to update media info from the internet but not over right
existing data. What this appears to have done is insert into lots of
tags additional TPE2 'Album Artist' data which in many cases it has
gathered from compilation albums and not the original albums.
Therefore, the 'Album Artist' is now listed as 'Various Artists'. Now I
wouldn't have thought that that should be a problem except that for some
reason Slim Server is giving priority to 'Album Artist' rather than
'Artist' and listing many of my artists now as 'Various Artists'.

Therefore, I would like to configure Slimserver to ignore 'Various
Artists' or (in my mind what it should be doing anyway) give priority
to the 'Artist' tag.

Any thoughts

Ok, here's what I did:

I created a folder, and added a single file (without accented
characters to keep things simple).

The track is Zenyatta Mondatta-11-The Other Way of Stopping.flac, and
it did indeed have MisicMagic fingerprint tags in it.

First, I pointed SlimServer at this test folder, and did a clear and
rescan. It dumped my database, found the single track, added it to my
library and then crashed.

Second, used Mp3Tag v32.36 to remove the MusicMagic tags from the file
(there were still a bunch of MusicBrainz tags in there through), did a
clear and rescan with the same result as above.

Third, I turned off the Use MusicMagic setting, and did a
clear/rescan and again, it crashed.

Fourth, I disabled TrackStat and rescanned ... no crash ... so it looks
like the problem is with TrackStat.

Fifth, I replaced the file with the original to restore the mIP tags,
re-enabled Use MusicMagic and rescanned ... no crash ... but the song
also didn't end up with the mm link indicating it should be mixable.
I think this is not a surprise, however, since the track isn't where
it's supposed to be.

I'm currently rescanning my entire library now, with TrackStat
disabled, and MusicMagic ENABLED ... I'll report back when that
completes.

2006-10-03 Thread shabbs

Out of curiosity, I checked my FileCache and it was pretty large. I ran
the cachedump script and it produced an output that contained nearly
500 lines that referenced fitstretch-100-100-0 on each line. Is this
for the resizing of the Album Art? Here are my details:

Library: 722 albums with 9653 songs by 1233 artists.
Library size: 67.2GB, all MP3 files, cover art for everything.

SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Perl Version: 5.8.7 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt
No additional plugins installed.

FileCache folder size: 162MB, 18,253 files, 4,340 folders

Is that reasonable to expect?

[slim] Problem: NOISE instead of sound ...

2006-10-03 Thread zyssp

hi there
i got a brand new squeezebox3 last friday and was very happy with the
easy and self explaining setup! I have listened hours without any
problem since yesterday, suddenly the sound is gone ... there was no
special interaction (besides listening my sound collection). i can
hear this noise with different amplifiers and active speakers connected
to analog out and headphone jacket. the noise does not disappears when
the box is turned off (standby) nor if i disconnect the slim server. it
begins immediately when connecting the power supply - and ends when
disconnecting ...
the only thing is when i re-program the xilinx the noise is disabled
for a few seconds and starts again, when programming is over :-(
resetting to factory defaults and changing the AC/DC adapter was not
successful ... no i am out of ideas :-(

setup:
- slimserver 6.5 (stable) on debian linux
- wireless connection

any suggestions?

thanks
patrick

[slim] scanning issues - are my playlists an issue

2006-10-03 Thread rick's cafe

I recently upgraded from 6.3.1 to 6.5.0

I have roughly 26,ooo tracks, 6000 albums and 2500 artists

Scaning always has been a bit of an issue - in so far as my Win XP
machine takes a couple of hours to complete its scan. I have always
wondered if this is to be expected or if my set up causes the longer
process.

DIrectory structure is basically

F:/Music/personal folder/genre/artist/album/track

When I upgraded to 6.5.0 and decided to browse playlists I noted that
it brought up all playlists in the Music folder.

Generally speaking I only had about 7 or 8 medium size playlists (circa
100 tracks each) which I had saved on my system before the upgrade. All
of a sudden I now have roughly 300 recognized playlists. When I
investigated this I then saw that in a number of my album folders I
have a playlist file for the cd which was ripped - and these playlists
make up the bulk if not all of those lists which I unexpectedly
discovered.

Doers anyone have an idea on the changes made to recognition of
playlists and on whether having these in my directory would cause the
scan process to take as long as it does.. or is it reasonalble to
expect a library of my size (mostly MP3's @192kbs) to take upwards of 4
hours to to a full scan

thoughts appreciated

I may add a few stats: I've just upgraded to 6.5 and my stats are as

about 1.75 Go size with 4237 folders and 12.889 files. I have no ready

read/scanned comme il faut as they show up as No Album. Any relations

[slim] How to delete empty RSS feeds?

2006-10-03 Thread Sam Lowry

I know this is usually easy, but I tried to delete various RSS feeds
that no longer worked. Now I have 4 empty boxes, which leaves SB
thinking there are 4 feeds extra. Is there a way to force it to delete
the empty ones? Currently using 6.5, but I had the problem back in 6.2
6.3- just didn't get annoying until now.

Also, is there a way to make my SB3 switch to SqueezeNetwork when the
server goes down (power outages are common here)? The router would
automatically restart, but the computer will not. Ideally it would
switch back once the server is running again.

Thanks,
SB3, WinXP, P4

 To run this script:
 Install ActivePerl if on Windows.
Place cachedump.pl in your SlimServer's 'server' directory.
Run at a command prompt: perl -Ilib -ICPAN cachedump.pl C:/Program

After it's done, open up the cachedump.txt file.
Replace the last item with your cache directory if it's different.
I have Active Perl 5.88 installed on XP. I dumped dumpcache.pl in my
C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server directory (I have a default
SlimServer installation).

I then tried the command above from the C: prompt, and then tried it
again changing the forward slashes to back slashes, but just got this:

C:\perl -Ilib -ICPAN cachedump.pl C:/Program
Files/SlimServer/server/Cache
Can't open perl script cachedump.pl: No such file or directory

C:\perl -Ilib -ICPAN cachedump.pl C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Cache
Can't open perl script cachedump.pl: No such file or directory

cachedump.pl is certainly in this directory:
C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server
It's icon shows it is associated with Active Perl. If I double click
the file a dos box opens and closes... so I guess most of my end seems
OK.

Does anyone (errr.. Andy?) have any idea why it's not working for me.
I've looked to see if I am doing something stupid, but missed it if I
am.

Did my first rescan after the initial one - 3 minutes 32 seconds for 301
albums, 3026 songs, 461 artists.

Not bad at all.

The processor usage pattern is different with the split scanner. It
used to take 30-40% processor with heavy disc access for the initial
75% of the scan, then 50-60% processor with light disc access for the
remaining 25% of the scan. Now the final portion of the scan only
takes about 20-30% processor.

[slim] Re: Another 6.5 Missing Songs Problem

2006-10-03 Thread dSw

I think the new scanning process is definitely a bit flakey. My first
scan with 6.5 missed out large parts of my collection. I looked at the
main SS log and there were loads of errors as follows:

'*Use of uninitialized value in string eq at
/usr/local/slimserver/lib/MP3/Info.pm line 823, $fh line 1.*'

I did another scan just to make sure and suddenly everything was picked
up OK.

Does your tag editor preserve the file date/time stamp when you make
adjustments? That may be the case as the scan keys off the last
modified date IIRC.

[slim] Re: Is 6.5 perfect?

2006-10-03 Thread diomark

The only major issue that I've seen is that the favorites don't seem to
work (?) - also occasionally I'm getting duplicated artists/albums -
but this is fixable by clearing the music library/rescanning
everything...

Also I've seen softsqueeze die with bad tracks.. (although my sb3 just
skips a bit but recovers)

A .bat script run from the server directory solved the space in Program
Files for me, and I used this command:

perl -Ilib -ICPAN cachedump.pl Cache in a .bat

Just change the .txt extension on the attached to .bat and put in
server directory with cachedump.pl.

Using a batch file allows you to re-run the command easily.

2006-10-03 Thread ModelCitizen

Well, the script worked, but the output flummoxes me. The output
contains 153 lines of fitstretches and 9 lines of squash.

I have 1,060 folder.jpg files, each resting in the individual album
folders. Virtually all (barring mistakes) are 300 pixels by 300
pixels.

Anyway, that aside, quick maths: 1,060 times average folder.jpg file
size (est at 38kb) equals around 40mb.. and if the cache creates and
hold thumbnails then this total byte size should be a lot smaller. So I
still don't understand why my cache size is 185mb (and even wierder too,
why it was 246mb just two days ago, when I've not upgraded my SlimServer
installation or added any music to it).

Tonight it's:
185mb, 299 folders, 4,287 files
Two days ago it was:
246mb, 4,286 folders, 13,981 files

Hopefully it will continue to shrink at this rate!
:-)

MC.

Not saying it shouldn't be perfect in a perfect world, but there's a big difference in buffer size between SB1 and SB2. It also can't help that the SB1 is on the weaker connection... have you tried swapping the two players? There are some issues with synchronization IMHO, but sometimes they're minimized by leveling the playing field a bit.

cover.jpg in the folder), or merges of albums. What I mean by merges of albums is this: When I get a multi-CD album, I remove the DISCNUMBER tag and renumber the files so that they're presented as a single album (after all, I don't tag specially to show which side of the LP or which track of the 8-track this song was on). Sometimes I forget to do this until after SS has already seen the album. It is impossible for SS to pick up that the Disc 2 album is no longer is existence, even after all of its tracks are moved to what used to be the Disc 1 album.

Can you clarify what happens when it loses it - does either player
stutter or stop? Or do they simply drift out of sync without actually
breaking up the audio? And it should resync at track changes - does
this occur? Do you hear a break at the track change while it tries to
resync?

[slim] HELP me to stream the radio RTL.FR

2006-10-03 Thread patrickw59

hello all,

I need your help!
Some time ago, several members advised me on the procedure to stream
the radio RTL.FR to my device. I needed to use the link:
mms://vipmms9.yacast.net/encoderrtl
I don't know how you found this info, but it worked.

Since 1 Oct, the radio changed their interface, this link is now longer
worked. Instead the radio is now accessible via the page
http://radio.rtl.fr.
I checked the source code of this Java applet, but have identified
anything ressembling a link that will be compatible with my box.

Could you please advise on the procedure to find the proper link, or
even possibly find it for me?

Thanks a lot,

This will make it possible to see a little bit more what actually
happens when the DynamicPlaylist plugin handles the commands that take
som time. If these commands is happening when the track is changed it
might just be that the SQL that is executed takes some time on your
