[slim] Announce track
Hello, I was wondering if there's a way to announce tracks via the speaker before actually playing the track. This would be handy for blind people or children or devices where the display is too far away or even broken. So is there a plugin for that? Can you recommend a software that easily creates mp3s with the title name and integrate them into a playlist? Re: [slim] Problem connecting one Touch to the LMS/Vortexbox
well.. a factory reset of the Touch still didn't work. To try and further diagnose this, I wonder, is there something intrinsically different from the Touch devices that would make them more susceptible to network issues, as opposed to other Squeezedevices? If all's going well, I have 8 devices connected. 4 x Touch and 4 'others' - 2 Booms and 2 SB3/Classics. Throughout my router reboots etc of the last few days, the Booms and Classics have come through undisturbed. The Booms and one Classic are wi-fi connected; the other Classic is ethernet over powerline. I now have two Touches which have managed to reconnect and find LMS; I still have two Touches which just don't seem to be able to 'break through' and find the Network - but all four Touches dropped off at the same time. Wouldn't that point to something? Re: [slim] Problem connecting one Touch to the LMS/Vortexbox
I've prepared a schematic of my network to try and help clarify things further. Anything with a solid line is cabled, anything with a dashed line is wireless. While I've shown all four Touch's as connected, only two are at the moment. One of those two (top right) has two dashed lines. When it's connected, I think it goes straight to the router, but it might be going via the Powerline Ethernet access point. Now that I've figured out how to post this, I might try and create one showing my projected new set up. Obviously what this doesnt' show is IP addresses etc, but I can try and create a table showing those too. Re: [slim] Yet another thread on replacing squeezebox devices
bpa wrote: I cannot get my head around what compromise you might find acceptable. Can you write out your ideal use case. This would be an ideal case - what would your dream system look and feel like (not a static component description) if somebody created a solution. For example, can you write the steps you would do to select and play a track on your controller ? What steps you would need to do on your amp/player to know it is s connected to the LMS UPNP entity ? What steps are needed to get the amp/player play music from LMS (and not the controller but on the amp/player interface) ? Does the amp /player have to display anythin ? A use case. Some of this is expressed in terms of the solution, for instance I have no better way to describe an ideal controller than to say 'just like LMS'. I don't want to throw away amplifiers or servers that I have that do an excellent job as it is. Some of the components are, therefore, part of my ideal system. I want: 1) To use a browser on a wireless laptop or tablet to play music in my lounge, and sometimes in one other room. 2) The user interface needs to be as flexible as LMS is now, which means I can customise menus to play things like 'Works By Composer' and select a performance by a particular Artist, or 'Random Works', or 'Random Movements', or 'Albums by Conductor', and so on I have no need for anything better than that which LMS provides, so I want to keep it as it is. 3) This user interface includes the ability to select a 'player' which in this case would be the streaming software (i.e. just like squeezelite, especially in its 'local player' guise). 4) The music is in flacs, up to 24/192 quality, on a linux server. 5) My amplifiers are connected to my wired home network. 6) I want to select the input to the amplifier to be the music source and stream (i.e. the streamer on the server), no more than that, and nothing need be displayed on it for each track. It's just an input, like a tuner, LP player (yes, I still have more than one!) or whatever. 7) I have no need for additional hardware boxes, indeed I have a positive aversion to them. There is no need for them. They perform no useful function that I can detect. 8) I have no need for multi-room sync. 9) The KISS principle applies (Keep It Simple, Stupid). I just want to play music as simply and reliably as possible. Thus removing the Touch from my current set-up should make the solution better. So, since both amplifiers already support streamed music over the wired network using UpnP, I want to use something like squeezelite to stream directly to them, rather than to an audio device on my server. LMS has a player which appears as http MP3 stream and has same URL as LMS webUI but extension stream.mp3 (e.g. http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3). Then select whatever audio you want and play it on this new player - audio will be converted and then routed to the http stream which should be played on your amp/whatever. The problem is usually the real audio amp has a buffer and it buffers up the stream and so there is a delay between choice and hearing the audio. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101622 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Does this do anything that Mp3tag's Export configurations can't do? One thing about working directly with LMS' data is that you have to work around the shortcomings of the LMS database and LMS quirky scanning logic. If you've witnessed the struggles they've had over the years doing (what you would think are) simple things in LMS, then you should realize that working with this data can be a headache. There are a few export configurations included with Mp3tag, but additional ones are easily added. The issue about defining local streams is important as it is a limitation of your equipment. Probably can be overcome by publishing the stream under upnp. Just shows I didn't read the instructions properly:) Well, the streaming does work. I had to go to vtuner websites to create the stream for each of my players, and then I set up the streams as favourites on them. If I disconnect the internet they are a bit slow to connect when they start up, but after that they can indeed play my local stream.mp3 without needing an internet connection. vtuner appears to insist that the stream must be mp3s or 'Windows Media'. Whether (or how) that is enforced is a puzzle that I would want to look into if the 'remote streaming' facility were to be extended to cover other codecs (which I'd want if I was to pursue this method). Apart from the codec, the other issue is one you mentioned about buffering. There does indeed seem to be quite a lag between control and the music being played. Whether that could be improved I don't know. In the mean time I have also been experimenting with rygel. I managed to get squeezelite to talk to a pulseaudio 'upnp' audio device, in turn read by rygel and streamed by plugin 'GstLaunch' to one of my players. For some reason I can't get the other to work yet, but I have hopes. I'm struggling a bit with defining the codec I want to use, but have made some progress using existing software. Mostly they build players going for the lowest common denominator making it to simple , probably some cheap of the shelf implementation . Hifi manufactures for example never seem to understand the amount of work and money you have to put in to the software ? Actually as JRiver is a software company ? Potentially they could do better . It supposed to be a standard ie you can have several different servers players and controllers , but you rarely see anything but basic functions and a lot of proprietary extensions if they are not very basic . And then there is the controllers ? I don't get that at all in upnp world . I have installed several upnp players on my iPad they are all very silly and primitive when you are used to iPeng or SqueezePad . There was an entertaining tread some years ago in the dev section where this was vented . The technical details eludes me . But it goes something like that dlna/upnp potentially can do all stuff we want but no ones doing doing it because it's very hard to do . You rather do you own code for sync and end up with an proprietary solution . There is nothing wrong with your own specialised software either . Both squeezeboxes and Sonos use this aproach to get things done their way . Actually I think slim proto and our server in its many names actually predates upnp/dlna with a couple of years :) Hmm a pity that never though off pitching this as a standard back then ? Re: [slim] Problem connecting one Touch to the LMS/Vortexbox
Some routers have a setting to limit the amount of devices conected , check it's web-UI . A Touch can loose its static settings if you poke around in the network settings part of the UI , can't remember what exact menu that provokes that behaviour .
