[slim] Setup Win XP server, networking and plugin Questions

2009-03-19 Thread cybervision_

I have a PC with Windows XP used as a server. It connects to Transporter
via ethernet with switch in between. It also has a wireless card
installed and I want to use it to get my Duet Controller to control
squeezecenter, but how should I set up networking on that computer?

- Static IP or not?
- I would like the wireless card to be set up so that I can connect to
the PC with the Duet controller AND to have the card connect to my
wireless internet so I can use internet radio etc. on the Transporter,
but is that possible?

Re: [slim] Music Catalogue in PDF - Requirements?

Yes, relative page numbers (A-5) is the way to go I think. You can't do
without page numbering if you plan on an index or any sort of lookup
table.

While I never used it, it looks like PDF-API2 (on CPAN) can be used to
generate a PDF.

Did you just get the switch? Return it and get a Linksys WRT54GL

Maybe your IR receiver isn't working? Go to SqueezeCenter Settings -
Advanced - Logging and enable (player.ir) - Infrared Activity Map
Parsing. Press some buttons on the remote and then open the
SqueezeCenter log file near the bottom of Settings - Information.

If there are no IR commands listed in the log, SC is not receiving them
so won't act on them.

Before sending it in for repair, check that all checkboxes are checked
in Settings - Player - Remote and might as well try reinstalling SC as
a last effort.

[slim] Napster - List by Album

2009-03-19 Thread KMorgan

That Napster music cannot be listed Album on the Squeezebox is proving a
bit of a nuisance. Andy has informed us that Napster have chosen to
only use Genre, Artist, Paylist as the basic music sorting options and
that is what we are stuck with.

I've contacted Napster to ask them if by-Album can be included. The
reply was initially that they used to have a by-Album option but
removed it (!?). When I enquired further I was told that I should
contact my device manufacturer regards menus etc. Full circle.

If you have a Napster subscription, and you too wish there was a
by-Album option, perhaps you could join me in trying to persuade
Napster to include it. A barrage of emails might do it. I get the
feeling I'm a lone voice just now.

[slim] OT question about IE7

2009-03-19 Thread cliveb

I appreciate this is off-topic, but after some Googling and failing to
find an answer, I thought I'd ask here in the friendliest forum I
know...

I've long been a user of Firefox, and often have an index page open
in one tab, then drag interesting links to another tab so I can read
them and then return to the index page for more items. (For example: I
would have the Slim Devices General Discussion page in one tab, and
drag individual threads to another).

I also sometimes use IE, and recently updated from IE6 to IE7 (in the
hope that they might have fixed some of the bugs in their DOM handling,
but that's another story). IE7 has tabbed browsing, but I can't find any
way to open a link in one tab in another pre-existing tab. In Firefox
you drag the link to the other tab. But when I do this in IE7, it opens
the link in the original tab. (If I were being uncharitable, I would ask
would bloody use is that to anyone?). I've played around with some of
the settings, but to no avail. Have I missed something, or is it simply
not possible to drag a link to another extant tab?

One way to handle it would be to make the cover art smaller and run the
track listings in a paragraph form rather than as a list. For instance,
for The Beatles' Abbey Road:

1. Come Together; 2. Something; 3. Maxwell's Silver Hammer; 4. Oh!
Darling; 5. Octopus's Garden; etc.

Re: [slim] Does rebuffering concern only wifi?

2009-03-19 Thread Mark Lanctot

It's not 100% guaranteed...it is 99.9% guaranteed. :-)

Ethernet has so much more bandwidth, you should never encounter a
rebuffering issue. About the only problem you'd ever encounter is a
bad cable, switch or NIC.

It's not affected by distance (not in a home anyway), interference,
competing networks, etc. Generally, it just works, you never have to
fiddle with it or worry about it.

Rebuffering is basically, the player ran out of data, it seems to have
gotten delayed somewhere.

In many (most?) cases this is caused by wifi problems. A connection
that drops out whenever the next door neighbor picks up the phone or
turns on the microwave, for example.

Going to a wired connection in virtually all cases (except those where
your wiring sucks...) fixes that hop.

If, on the other hand, the dropouts/rebuffering are cause by a slow
upstream link (ie, radio drops out, but local music doesn't..) then
moving to a wired connection won't help: smacking your ISP around or
paying for a fatter connection would be the real fix.

This should all work...but you're using Windows to manage this ad-hoc
connection, it's up to Windows now. On the wireless connection, you'll
have to find out what it's doing. Is it assigning addresses by DHCP?
Static only? What's the IP address of the wireless connection and what
addresses are allowed on the ad-hoc network the wireless card creates?

I would imagine all this is in Windows' Network Connections settings
or through some sort of manufacturer-specific software that came with
your wireless card.

You say the SBC is able to connect to the PC - how do you know this?
If it can connect to SqueezeCenter on the PC but not the SBR, you may
have to reset the SBR. Most likely moving around all this network
stuff has left either the SBC or the SBR with an invalid IP address,
you may have to reset the SBR and/or the SBC.

Actually, in FF, you do not need to have a tab open already. Just drag
the link to the tab bar, i.e. to the right of the right-most open

Not the answer to the exact question, but perhaps close enough:

I can open a link in a new tab in IE7 by clicking the scroll-wheel of

Alternatively, you can right-click on the link and select the drop-down

I assume you mean SqueezeNetwork, and no you don't need a SN login to
run SC. It's only needed for services (such as Pandora, Rhapsody, etc)
 which are provided by SN.

SN is required for use of Live365, ShoutCast, and RadioIO from the SC7
menus as well.
Though I suppose those are a form of services also.

RadioIO is available via SC7 menus without a SN account but only via
Music Internet Only RadioIO, however these are all only 64k feeds.
The SC7 RadioIO menu item itself (SN required) is all the 128k feeds.

All ShoutCast and 128k RadioIO feeds will work fine if you Cut Paste
the URL's from an outside source, you just can't access them from the
main SC7 menu structure without a SN account.

[slim] Connect to server via router?

2009-03-19 Thread cybervision_

I have after a lot of nagging here decided to get a router and connect
my server-PC to it and connect wirelessly to it with my Transporter and
Controller.

What I was wondering about is this:

I use my other PC for ripping and the server will be standing in
another room without peripherals. Is it possible somehow to connect to
it through the wireless router and to put newly ripped .flacs into the
squeezecenter folder so that I can add music with less hassle?

Re: [slim] Connect to server via router?

2009-03-19 Thread JeffHart

Sure - you just need to create a share of some type. What OS are you
running on the server PC? I have a Remote Desktop connection from
my Vista laptop to my XP server, but have it set up the other way with
the share on the laptop. My server is next to my workspace so I use to
rip as well, but control it all from the laptop.

If they are both windows based you will need to set up the server to
allow file sharing and then map it using Windows Explorer from the PC.

Here's a link to Microsoft's explanation for XP -

Best regards,
Jeff

Re: [slim] OT question about IE7

There is an add-on for IE7 called IE7Pro which adds a lot of Firefox-y
goodness to IE. I'm not sure if it has this exact feature, but you
might want to look into it.

Re: [slim] Does rebuffering concern only wifi?

2009-03-19 Thread Kyle

I highly recommend wired. My SB3 worked fine for a couple of years,
then I began to have dropouts -- probably due to neighbors setting up
wireless networks, but who knows? I paid $100 for an alarm company to
run CAT-5 from my bedroom to my den (other end of the house). It was
money well spent.

[slim] Napster streaming bitrate

2009-03-19 Thread BrockStone

Hi there,

I am VERY excited to see we can finally get a streaming music solution
similar to Rhapsody in Canada (come on Rhapsody, poor).

I fired up Napster tonightand was greeted with muted sounded boomy
music. I've googled around and poked on Napster's site but I can't
find where they say what bitrate they stream at.

All I can find is this...which sort of makes sense from how horrible
the streaming sounds:

Music - Napster offers a collection of over 4 million songs to
download. They are formatted as Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. This
adds compression and higher sound quality at lower bit rates compared
to MP3 files. Napster music downloads consist of 192 kbps bit rate
while the streaming rate is 32 kbps.

Just my luck...we finally get streaming in Canada, and it is quite
possibly unusable...I find 32kbps unconfortable for voice never mind
music :(

Anyone have any more information on this?

[slim] Refreshed hardware this year for N networks?

2009-03-19 Thread Evan55

Ive recently discovered the Squeezebox Duet and fell in love with it
(well, on paper anyway) but I have just moved over to an entirely N
network, and Id really rather not run a separate G network too.
Since the new Linksys/Cisco and some of other audio streamers now run
on N networks, any rumors that Squeezebox will be updating their
hardware to support N networks? (maybe with some new features thrown
in too? :) )

SlimDevices/Logitech never comments on future products.

But I would not expect them to support N until its actually released as
a spec. So far, its only a draft. And for some reason, getting it
officially voted in as a standard is taking years.

From time to time I suffer from rebuffering :-(
I tried some things and it seems that distance, some settings (dhcp,
encoding etc., mode type b or g) on access point doesn’t influence on
 it.
So I consider changing my setup and go for wired. The question is : is
only wifi installation affected by rebuffering?

Generally, rebuffering is usually a wifi issue, but I have also seen
rebuffering due to other issues. I know one time I was getting
rebuffering a lot when I all I had was an SB2, and a clean install of
Squeezecenter resolved it. The Trackstat Playlist plug-in is also
known to cause rebuffering in some situations. (The clue is if the
rebuffering is always at track changes.)

issues as with b+g.

Re: [slim] Napster streaming bitrate

2009-03-19 Thread Mnyb

Are you serious 32kbps :-)

Wov, have folks been pleading fo ages to logitech to implement a music
service thats streams in 32kbps ROLF .
And they expect money for this service.
It is completely impossible to enjoy any kind of music at that bit
rate.

Napster UK claim that they stream 128kbps ? thats more like it, this
ok for radio
I can't check napster is not yet possible where i live.
