Re: [slim] Can't connect to WRE54G range expander
There isn't very much to set up on the WRE54G but what there is could make a difference. I run one with a standard WRT54GS for my Boom outside without a hitch. Do you get 2 solid blue lights on the WRE all the time? If the signal lock light goes red after it has gone blue, or alternates between the two, the WRE is losing the signal from the WRT so is probably too far away. Are you running B, G or mixed mode? What is the router running? Both mine are G only. Is the SSID the same for the WRE and WRT? Mine are. Is your SSID broadcast enabled? On the router as well. Both mine are. What channel is it on. Is the router on the same? Mine are both on 11. Finally, when you connect to the WRE with a browser, what's the screen refresh speed like. I found that if the distance between the two signals is too far, speed decreased considerably. -- Mick Seymour Mick Seymour's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21137 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63366 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Napster - now just $5 per month for streaming service
I am very concerned that you mention that the VC (venture capital) money may be running out for Napster. If that is the case, I see their new gesture as a hail mary pass that could possibly have devastating consequences for both itself and Rhapsody. If you sell a service below your costs (this is hypothetical as I have no idea what Napster's costs are) then you are not going to make up for it by increasing the volume of sales, or even by mooching sales from Rhapsody. All you are going to do is get customers used to a certain price point and then when you later raise that price to a sustainable level, you will most likely lose those customers again. Not a very viable long term strategy. When you compare the prices (before price drop) of Napster and Rhapsody, they are bargains for what they deliver: any album, any song, any artist on demand. I use my Rhapsody service ten times more than I use my cable TV service, and yet I pay ten times more for cable TV. So if my math is correct, that means that internet radio is 100 times cheaper than cable TV. Many years ago I remember a neighbor of mine started a small shop to rent roller skates for use at the beach. When another skate store lowered its prices, then my neighbor lowered his prices even more. This spiraled out of control to the point that it put both stores out of business. If Napster's strategy is to try to put Rhapsody out of business, then this may be an anti-trust issue. I encourage healthy competition, not predatory pricing. Of course all of this is a result of the short-sightedness of the record companies who are not pricing their own products in a healthy manner. Record companies are forcing this upon Napster and it may be the ruin of all the companies. Record companies don't get any royalties from terrestial radio although there is talk in Congress about changing that. If radio stations pay, maybe there will less pressure for internet radio to pay more than their fair share. I hope Napster is playing fair with its new price structure but I doubt it. I am going to stick with Rhapsody for the moment till I see where the dust settles. I am more than happy to pay value for value. I understand there is no such thing as a free lunch. I understand that Napster may be underpricing in a last desperate misguided attempt to survive. If that is the case, then rest in peace Napster. I won't be party to your shenanigans. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63479 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There's a 'timely piece on The Register today' (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/18/spotify). Your nice long post wasn't in vain however; Napster are having issues of their own. They were bought last year by Best Buy, who seemed to be more interested in the platform (read: mobile framework) rather than the existing subscription base. Analysts think music subscriptions services just aren't working, due to static revenues against a changing environment. This may be Napster's attempt at starting a price war and, as you say, it can only end in tears. To be honest I don't quite understand why subscription services -wouldn't- work and be the most popular approach - but maybe that's because they fit my needs the best. -- simbo *bedroom:* squeezebox boom; *study:* squeezebox 3; *lounge:* softsqueeze; *conservatory/garden:* squeezebox receiver; *anywhere:* squeezebox controller 'last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/buggle52) simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63479 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SC 7.3.3 release date?
Please hang on. 7.3.3 is not going to release until we're satisfied with how the Controller wakes up and goes back to sleep. It's requiring a bit of tinkering, and then we need to verify that the final settings keep the battery charged up as long as possible. So instead of just picking a date, we're making sure that it meets the goals of improved wireless connectivity and improved battery life. We're hoping that 7.3.3 should be released somewhat soon. In the meantime, the latest beta is looking pretty good. I know you mentioned that you're reluctant to try out a beta, but if you're having wireless connectivity issues I would suggest trying the latest. http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.3 Mickey -- MickeyG Transporter Classé Audio DR6 Mark Levinson 23 Wilson Watt 3/Puppy 1 MickeyG's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11644 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63494 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Title format question...
Just to bump this up, not to hijack, I would also like to know if this is possible as I use (YEAR) in my title format also and keep getting (0) in the display. Is there a complete list/faq for title formats? I also would like to know how to have: TITLE by ARTIST (Track X from the ALBUM album (YEAR)) but can only get it to work with Track X_Y... -- Bison8 Bison8's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=27208 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63015 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Transporter NAPSTER
I have several devices in the house (Duet, Boom Transporter) which have ALL been working with SN, SC, net streaming, and my files. Today I decided to audition NAPSTER with my free 30 days. I started with the Duet and Squeezebox receiver, and all went well. Next I turned on the Transporter but it only plays one song at a time from an album, that is, I have to manually forward the track to hear the next song. Now this problem dose not exists with the Transporter, my library or with other net offered services. The Squeezebox receiver dose not exhibit this problem. The problem Im describing occurs only with the Transporter and either the SN or SC using NAPSTER. The other device works fine on both. Ive looked in the SC, SN and Transporter for settings that might cause this but I find nothing. Superchunk;424525 Wrote: No, no balanced outputs. Lift the earth on the interconnect at the preamp end eh? I'll try that if I don't get victory with the new net setup. Another way is to put a 10 ohm resistor between the interconnect screen and earth. This effectively grounds the cable shields while breaking the earth loop. I would also discuss the problem with the EL34 amp constructor. Other things I would try - 1. Move the router/modem as far away from the amp as possible. 2. Move the SB3 as far away from the preamp as the interconnects will allow. 3. Put one of those clunky ferrite clampon rf blockers on the cables to the SB3, first try the power cable, then the interconnects. 4. Cable connect the SB3 and turn off wireless in the router. -- Wirrunna A camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. [slim] Squeezebox - My experience
I bought a Snazio NET DVD Cinema HD SZ1350 many years ago so I could play avi files on my tv. At the time that seemed like the best solution. This product was good when it worked well but it locked up and needed a hard boot on a regular basis. It did do a pretty good job of playing internet radio though, even if it was a little limited in it's functionality. Last year I scrapped the Snazio for a Beyonwiz DP-S1. This thing does an awesome job of streaming video files from my little Linksys NSLU2 NAS. It can stream music over the network as well but I never used this feature because it annoyed me that it stopped and buffered every song which is especially annoying on mixed albums where there is no gap between the tracks. It also has no internet radio. So I started googling internet radio players and after a few days research decided the Logitech Squeezbox is the best one for the money. So I went and picked one up and started the installation. It all went fairly straight forward until it came time to download the firmware. I had a good wireless network connection established but after about 1.5hrs it hadn't completed the installation and then just stopped trying. So I restarted it, hoping it hadn't become a brick (thankfully it hadn't). I tried installing the firmware again and it failed again. Only getting about half way through as indicated by the progress bar. So I hard wired it to the router and tried again. For a while I thought there was no action since it only increment in 25% blocks, but eventually it completed the installation. Once that was done I tried playing some internet radio and it worked great. I was really impressed with it's speed connecting to the stream and the sound quality was great. I wasn't ever going to use it to play copies of CDs but since I had Squeeze Center installed I decided to try playing a couple. It worked really well! I had Squeeze Center on my laptop connected wirelessly to a NAS where the music was, and also to the Squeezebox wirelessly, and it didn't miss a beat! The search feature works really well and is quick. And the best bit was that between tracks there was no pause. If you weren't listening for it you couldn't even tell when one track finishes and the next starts. Since then I've been ripping all my CDs to the NAS. This was good but I wanted to listen to them when the computer with squeeze centre was turned off and the Linksys NSLU2 wasn't up for the job. So after a whole lot more Googling and research I got a QNAP TS-219. About 4 hours after opening the box and the usual stuffing around and trying to get a feel for it I had SSOTS installed and running, and was able to play my ripped CDs without the PC on. And what's more it's response was even quicker than running Squeeze Centre on the PC since both the server and albums were on the same machine now. The QNAP TS-219 and Squeezebox is a great combo. All in all I've probably spent around 12hrs in setting it up the Squeezebox and NAS. It was a little more painful than I expected due to some of the instructions being a little vuage or outdated but trial and error or searching the forums for an answer got me through to what is now pretty much a flawless installation. It does everything advertised + more and I'm loving listening to my albums and internet radio from the comfort of my couch. It has even motivated me to rip some of my older CDs to the NAS and I am enjoying CDs that have been packed away in boxes in the cupboards for year. -- CannonsJS CannonsJS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30431 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63508 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
