That said, I agree that the biggest mistake was to try to turn a niche product for audiophiles into a mass market product, from lowering quality on the hardware side to all those unreliable half-finished plugins and gimmicks (headphone jack on the Controller, STILL-missing RSS settings on MySB, I am looking at you!). And now they have extended the server to be a general media server, which most of us already have built into the OS of our PC or NAS or gaming console or... I fail to see why I would need that. [slim] Squeeze Server upgrade failed, how to proceed?
I'm currently running server version: 7.6.1-r33110@Wed Aug 17 18:52:34 PDT 2011 Yesterday I was logged in on the XP machine running squeeze server. A bubble on the squeeze server tooltray icon informed me that an upgrade was available. When I clicked on the bubble it started the upgrade, but immediately failed with a dialog telling me to download the VS 2010 C++ runtime, and an URL to do so with. I clicked OK (or whatever), with the intention to look at it later. Today I tried to make squeeze server update itself, and it informed me that there are no available upgrades. When I look at http://www.mysqueezebox.com/download I see that 7.7.1 is available. How should I proceed? Should I download 7.7.1 and install it? Will it be able to upgrade the existing installation and keep the settings? Or is there a different way I can persuade the existing installation to upgrade itself? Or is 7.7.1 something I should stay away from altogether? (like eg. 7.6.0 was...?) My wife has a Kindle Fire that was given to her as a gift. I'm sad to say that the device is a huge dissapointment. If I had bought it myself, I would have returned it. It's a real shame. I think Amazon is great - I'm a Prime member. I have had a Kindle Keyboard for a year now and still love it! My wife has one too. But they blew it with the Fire. If it worked well as a reader, I'd say I understood that - but it's less functional as a reader than the Kindle Keyboard!! I'm tremendously annoyed by the fact that they don't allow you to get apps from the Andriod Marketplace. It means anything I got on my Xoom from the andriod marketplace can't be put on my Fire. Sure, there are probably ways to do it involving rooting and stuff, but I'm not going there. I can't say how easy it would be to use the nook tablet, but certainly the Fire makes it diffcult to use it as a squeezebox controller. Holding the Fire in my hand I have to say I like the size and form factor. The screen looks great too. After researching it, we bought a Nook Tablet and love it. The only advantage I've read to rooting it is to access the Android Marketplace directly, but even without rooting you can access the Amazon Market for more apps and better prices, including free. Beyond that, I've taken apps I have on my Android phone and emailed the apk files to myself, which I then open and load directly onto the Nook. So I don't see the lack of Android Marketplace as a killer. I rooted my Kindle Fire after Amazon pushed out the 6.2.1 OS update. I then installed the Android Market app and have installed several apps from the market. My understanding is that many apps can be sideloaded onto the KF or installed via SlideMe. To my knowledge, the Kindle Fire has never been marketed as a tablet, but instead as a device to consume media. I honestly don't remember if being rooted was required, or whether the SB app could be installed simply by sideloading (which is a bit different). With the initial release, the NT could load some things via sideloading, and if you wanted to take the next step you could root and then do things like access Market. I had my NT rooted so early in the game I'm not sure. Be that as it may, if you were to buy a NT right now it would probably have version 1.4.1 installed on it, which is the one they just released. If that's the case you would have few choices - I don't think you could get sideloading to work without rooting, and you'd have to root to be able to get anything off Android Market. What will make the difference for me is if the XDA team can't get 2ndinit or alternate OSes bootable on the NT. In that case it really does become a dead end. Live with a rooted 1.4.0 or 1.4.1 on it and be left behind as newer and better tablet environments become available, or sit and wait for someone to root the next version when it comes out (and so on)? Neither is useful for any reasonable long haul. Part of the reason the original Nook did so well was that it was open enough to keep the XDA community interested in doing stuff with (to) it. It is absolutely weird. I wasn't gonna post for a few days before I had some tentative conclusion on my latest test. I am working on the assumption that the physical layer is - and always has been - ok and that there is some protocol problem further up the network stack. My Win XP server is one busy beast and I thought hey, how about I try assigning HIGH priority to Squeezeserver.exe? Did this and the SB performed w/o any Can't connect all day ... until that evening it was going absolutely mental with Can't connect. Basically alternating non-stop for 1hr between Can't connect and a good time. During that episode, I was able to stream a video via the network bridge. In the end, I pulled the power on the SB. That was 24hrs ago and the SB has not blinked since. So ... Upping the priority on the server process seems to help prevent the problem from arising. (Why?) Once the problem is there, only a power-cycle on the SB will fix it. All preferences will be retained. Probably would have, if I hadn't screwed up and clicked yes on the Delete logs and settings dialog that was remaining from the uninstall of the old version. Just as I had clicked I thought noo but too late. :-/ and 7.7.1 is very stable (NOT like 7.6.0) Good to know. Unfortunately I haven yet succeeded in scanning the iTunes database. That is: it says it's scanning it, but nothing shows up in the web interface...? Nah... it's just that the web interface of 7.7.1 doesn't work with opera.
