Re: [slim] LMS/DLNA (I think) confusion
With LMS you don't need DLNA for playing music files on another computer on your network. You can do that through network shares. Once LMS has scanned the files on the other computer, they appear and function exactly as if they were local files. As for games, Netflix, etc, I have no idea. Re: [slim] LMS/DLNA (I think) confusion
alextab wrote: What I want: A music server that connects to my audio system and plays both local media and streamed audio. And by this I mean: 1) Local media - stored on the music server and connect via file sharing. 2) Streamed audio - the audio from media played on computers that are NOT the music server. So for example if I wanted to watch Netflix, a DVD or play a game on a separate computer the audio would be wirelessly streamed to the music server. I set up Debian, LMS and Squeezelite and had the first part. movies, games and music have very different characteristics and due to this requires different solutions. If you want a solution that works for all, you likely want to look at some kind of networked sound card or wireless speaker solution rather than a Squeezebox/LMS/DLNA setup. For audio, Squeezebox/LMS works great. For games you really need an audio cable between the computer and the audio equipment or some kind of networked sound card/wireless speaker. Using LMS/Squeezebox won't work because the audio will be delayed due to buffering and using DLNA won't work because you are unlikely going to find a good way to make all games output their audio to a DLNA renderer. For movies you are likely also going to get sync issues if you try to use LMS/Squeezebox for output of audio and output the video directly from the computer, the reason for this is also buffering which will result in that the audio and video isn't synced. DLNA will work for movies stored on your local network but it's unlikely to work for online movie streaming services like Netflix. alextab wrote: It seems like DLNA answers the second part but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. I think what I want is, if I understand DLNA correctly: DLNA Server on PC DLNA Controller on PC DLNA Renderer on Music Server I'd love any guidance on how to get this setup or if I am on the right track. Thanks. My first advice is that pretty much the only scenario where DLNA works is for viewing movies stored somewhere on your network where: - DLNA Server runs on a PC/NAS which have direct access to the movie files on a local or network mounted harddisk. - DLNA Controller/Renderer runs on your TV, DVD/blueray player or similar device which handles both audio and video playback. - Depending on which products you use, it might also be possible to run the DLNA controller on a separate computer, tablet, smartphone. Having said this, you can use DLNA also for music listening, but it's often hard to get it reliable since people tend to mix hardware from different manufacturers when they use DLNA. But if you want to go this route, the best DLNA controller I've seen for music is Kinsky by Linn (http://oss.linn.co.uk/trac/wiki/Kinsky) and using this you will be able to access music stored on one computer and output the audio signal through a renderer running on another computer (for example the DLNA renderer built into LMS). Forget about DLNA for streaming movies from online services (like Netflix) or games, it's going to be too hard to make them output the audio and video through a DLNA renderer. Some services/games might have support for it, but most doesn't. Finding a solution for Netflix is pretty easy since TV's, DVD/blueray players, AppleTV, Chromecast and similar devices often have native support for Netflix these days, just select a device and connect that directly to your amplifier and display/TV. For games and other online video streaming services my recommendation would be to investigate some kind of networked sound card or wireless speakers where you can output the audio directly from the computer running the game to the amplifier/speaker without going through an extra computer/server. For games you really don't want to have any delays, so even if you would succeed to get the audio/video in sync you would need the audio/video to play immediately and not five seconds after you have moved your character in the game. I don't have any personal experience with networked sound cards and wireless speakers, it's possible that they will introduce too much latency/delays for them to be useful in a gaming setup. SqueezePlug on Piwhat am I doing wrong?
After reading and discussing matters here a while ago, I put together a Pi (rev. B) to run SqueezePlug. I got various parts (PSU, WiFi adapter, etc. from the approved lists, and put it together using the video instructions at squeezeplug.de. I installed both LMS and SqueezeLite. THE GOOD: The server portion of this seems to be working well. I can connect to it with iPeng, and play music from the server either in iPeng's internal player, or sending the audio through my SBTouch with no problem whatsoever. THE BAD: While the server seems to be running fine, the player is the exact opposite. Using the headphone jack (along with good headphones) for audio is a painful experience, the music stuttering and distorted. It almost seems like the Pi is putting out a prodigious amount of RF noise, every bit of which is interfering with the audio. It's absolutely unlistenable, whether playing music on the Pi's internal LMS, or a a server on my NAS. THE UGLY: Well, maybe that isn't such a problem, as I plan to go straight from the Pi into my AVR's input using HDMI cables. But here's the problem: even if I explicitly have setup configure the Pi to use the HDMI for audio output, nothing comes out when I plug it into my AVR's HDMI input. I have checked said input with other sources, using the same cable, and can verify it works; so the problem appears to be restricted to the Pi. Any suggestions? the nightfly's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=42075 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100246 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Logitech Media Server 7.7.3 released
In an attempt to figure out where my scans were going wrong, I changed some of the advanced scan settings to debug, then started a scan. LMS stopped, and every time I tried to restart it failed. It would say starting and then stop without ever reaching running. That prevented me from entering the advanced settings to change the scan settings back. So, I hit reset logging preferences and run clean up on both preference files and cache. That allowed me to restart LMS. Then I ran a clear library and rescan. That was interrupted by an offer to update, so I had to change the update to no update and delete the 7.7.3 that had already been downloaded to cache. After I did that and unticked the pictures and videos, the scan completed, for the first time in a long time. So, it seems like most things are fixed. I am not sure I have the courage to try auto start, but maybe I will someday. For now, I'm avoiding auto start. Thanks to garym and thanks again to every one here for your guidance and patience. jeffstake's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32260 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=99452 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Logitech Media Server 7.7.3 released
By the way, I had one other problem that for a moment seemed to be connected to LMS, but was not. I was getting garbled signal with Hi-Res audio files, but then I realized that I had substituted a new optical cable at one point. It worked fine with low res files, and I had not tried hi-res, assuming that if one worked the other would as well. Bad assumption. When I put back the cheaper optical cable, the hi-res files played fine again. jeffstake's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32260 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=99452 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Logitech Media Server 7.7.3 released
Hi, I'm running linux mageia 3. I installed the rpm without problem but it doesn't start. My perl version is : # perl -v This is perl 5, version 16, subversion 3 (v5.16.3) built for x86_64-linux-thread-multi When I try to run it manually, I have the following : # /usr/libexec/squeezeboxserver NOTE: Class::XSAccessor 1.05+ not found, install it for better performance DBD::SQLite object version 1.40 does not match bootstrap parameter 1.34_01 at /usr/lib/perl5/5.16.3/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/DynaLoader.pm line 213. Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/Slim/Utils/DbCache.pm line 11. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/Slim/Utils/DbCache.pm line 11. (... same 2 lines several times) I installed DBD::SQLite using cpan. I also installed many perl things using either the package management software or cpan, but It still doesn't work so I think I'm not going in the right direction. I know nothing about perl. Before 7.7.3, I was using 7.8 from http://www.jamesarbrown.com/?p=186 because of perl version problem with 7.7.2, but I've another system to migrate to mageia 3 and I'd rather use official package. Before that I was using 7.7.2 with mageia 2, using perl 5.14. I mention this is the the first time I've a problem with the regular LMS packages, so I suppose there is a difference on how this last version installs itself or with my linux. Thanks a lot for your help. I'm not an expert on linux, so please be patient.
