I have no involvement in this project (But I think it's exiting), so my vote doesn't really count. But I think Jubarend's work is really good. I caught the cassette reference right away. It works well both in the small and big versions. Looks friendly. Has both the musical reference of the cassette and the passion of the heart. Maybe if the cassette included a couple of black dots in the top where the little holes are suppoed to be, the reference would be more obvious. Mediamonkey and the Squeeze-ecosystem obviously fill two different needs. The one thing were they can easily be compared is the scanning. And MM is far ahead. Lets just hope it is not too late and they have a (couple of) new model(s) up their sleeve, so they have something new and shiny to focus their (renewed?)marketing around. Re: [slim] So, what exactly is the future of streaming audio going to be?
I think the initial question has been answered pretty good. So I will continue the slightly off topic comparison between Sonos and SB. I think one of the biggest differences is that Sonos is pretty much plug'n'play that just works out of the box for most people. You can hardly say the same about Squeezeboxen. On the negative side, Sonos has a limit on the size of the library supported. Around 65.000 tracks, depending on how they're tagged. I must say it is not getting any easier to recommend SB over Sonos especially now that they released the small (and almost affordable) Play:3. Still SB is more affordable and flexible. But at what cost? Other than that I think Erlands comparison sums it up pretty well. Edit: Just came to think on one very important missing feature of Sonos: New music Bummer. -- Muele BR Mogens 2 Radios (1 battery), 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Softsqueeze (at work), SqueezeCommander and SqueezePlayer on Se X10 mini and HTC Desire. A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86926 Question: Dedicated controller necessary? - Go on, just buy a Sonos then! - Are the two extra clicks really that bad? - The original Controller works well! - Yes, such a controller would be the icing on the cake! Go on, just buy a Sonos then! You could do that, but you would probably miss the flexibility Squeezebox gives over Sonos. Are the two extra clicks really that bad? In squeezecommander you can set the phone to keep the screen on=0 clicks (will cost some battery-time) or diable the lock-mechnanism = 1 click. The original Controller works well! You can do some things to improve the controller, e.g. disable the powersaving features. And there's a setting somewhere to allow you to scroll one letter at a time instead of one album/artist at a time. Yes, such a controller would be the icing on the cake! Sure, if it came from Logitech, maybe it would generate a few extra sales but probably not enough to justify the effort. For existing customers I think aftersales of such a controller would be close to 0. Based on the expected pricetag of such a device, compared to what alternatives are out there. All in all I think there are plenty of existing choices. Posting a thread like this could perhaps inspire some of the 3rd party app-developers to add the functionality you are missing. As I see it there are two issues: Keep the users from exiting the app by mistake, and allow the screen to shut off and be awakened by the accelerometer. For an existing app, the extra development could be worth the effort. (Third issue is ofcourse setup of the Receiver, but there are also 3rd party solutions for that) Take a look at what options there already are for iThings and Android, and I'm sure you'll find something with a satisfactory FAF (Family acceptance factor). -- Muele BR Mogens 2 Radios (1 battery), 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Softsqueeze (at work), SqueezeCommander on Se X10 mini and HTC Desire. Re: [slim] Android Controller App
At first, when I saw the announcement, I thought uh thats a shame for Flatterman and the developer of SqueezeControl. Now they will have a hard time getting a return for their time and effort. But now I have tried it on both a HTC Desire and a SE XPmini. And it cannnot compete with SqueezeCommander. IT doesn't run smooth at all, scrolling requires care to do it just right, scrolling stutters on both devices, Sync-handling doesn't benefit from the touch screen at all. But the real showstopper for me is that you cannot connect to your home server across the internet. That is my usecase 95% of the time. I cannot be bothered to turn on wifi just to access my music when at home, and when at work, it is ofcourse not an option. But I think it is a good thing that Logitech have released an Android-port of squeezeplay. And I'm sure it will be developed further. Seems kind of the obvious thing to do. Squeezeboxes run some flavour of Linux and Android is another flavour of linux, so it should be a small deal porting it. Obviously it wasn't. I think Logitech will sell some devices for having an in-house-supported controller-app. And I think Flatterman will sell some SqueezeCommanders because it is better :-) And this inspires some amount of confidence in the future of the productline. -- Muele BR Mogens 2 Radios (1 battery), 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Squeezeplay. Try connecting any netradio player to server:9000/stream.mp3. You can now select a device called mozilla-something (or maybe other browsername?) It will play, but with considerable delay due to the way stream.mp3 buffers on the device. If you need playback and cannot live with the delay of stream.mp3 there is no other choice than iPhone. Re: [slim] Time for a speculation thread...
I think we have covered what devices might or might not appear. What do you think Logitech should do to keep the product alive and profitable? I think we need to realize that in order for the Squeeze-product-line to give us audio-pleasure, it needs to prosper. And mass market is where the money is for a company like Logitech. If the line prospers, there can be ressources for good sound quality and advanced features. To me there are three important things: 1. Make it work as stand alone player. The touch has a server built in. But it's hardly good enough. It should also support files that are on the network as well as directly attached. Having to have a server/(Powerfull-)NAS/PC of some sort running to listen to music keeps a lot of people away. Streaming services ofcourse help this a lot. 2. Make it easy to set up. Setting up a wired stand alone Touch should be no more difficult than setting up a SONOS. 3. UPNP. Make a great, free UPNP server. People will install it and eventually realize that native Squeeze-products will give them more than the stock UPNE-ones. 4. Marketing. Sell the damn stuff. Its actually good products. Afordable whole house audio ranging from cheap bathroom quality audio to audiophile quality-gear. That is unique. But Logitech chooses to just show a boring list of anonomous porducts on their website. 5. If the Touch cannot support the server decently, sell a server. Something like squeezeplug. Plug it in: network, usb-disk and power, ready to go. Logitech-branded!! Easy way to point to a network share is of course also mandatory, but it adds to the geekyness. Plug and play is the way to go. Ok, that was more than three ;) Someone could also suggest that this i a good time for Logitech to sell off the productline to some other company to develop it further. But to who, and what direction should they take it? -- Muele BR Mogens 2 Radios (1 battery), 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Squeezeplay. Re: [slim] Time for a speculation thread...
I think they should put their money on UPNP/DNLA support on the serverside. And make the Touch support network-drives, with just the DB stored on usb/memorycard. Regarding new models, there must be something coming up pretty soon or there never will IMHO. If we look back at the rate of release of new products. The next product has always been well under development when a product was released.(Edit: at least as far back as I know the history og Squeeze.) The Touch was greatly delayed, so the HW developers has had lots of time finishing their part of the new product(s). I haven't really been following beta lately, so I have no idea what big issues could keep the new product(s) from appearing (if software is the reason for them not to have been released yet). I agree with those that think The Boom is next in line to be replaced. However, then what about the work being done on Onebrowser? wouldn't that generally be wasted? Sorry if I overlook something important in Onebrowser. As mentioned I haven't been following beta since 7.5.0 or 7.5.1 I personally would like to see a touch with amplifier capabilities and OEM licensing. -- Muele BR Mogens 2 Radios (1 battery), 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Squeezeplay. Hooray, I got it to work finally. I suspect it was a combination of different things. I think the router was the problem at some point. After fidling around for some time, I sort of got through. but not really. The next problem was squeezeplay. (I had long stopped playing around with the Radio) It was a really old build and turned out to be stuck on a long-gone server, even though it allowed me to enter the IP of the remote server. Now all that remains is to see if the company firewall allows me through. I think it does. Thanks for all input. Ps. As for Amazon etc dumping the price. I really don't think Logitech minds that. The gross price is set so that Logitech can cover hardware and support and still have some profit. The more devices that are pushed to the consumer the better for the business. I think I have stated it before in another thread. But I think Logitech's main problem in relation to the Squeezebox product line, is that it is so different in comparison to most of their other product lines. If they are unable to supply mouse X, they still have 10 other mouse-models that are apealing to the same customers. Hence they don't care too much about having enough stock and order product-runs in due time. Re: [slim] What If Logitech Partnered with VortexBox?
Hehe All this talk about the Vortexbox appliance makes me wonder if I should buy one... I installed the image on a laptop and it worked like a charm. But my music is currently on a usb-disk, and that made the vortexbox so not-an-appliance-at-all that I ended up quitting and going back to the win-xp installation I had before (actually a fresh install, but whatever...) But I'm sure it's another story when running as it's supposed to. And at less than 400$ it's probably close to unbeatable. And yes, Logitech should definately link to Vortexbox.org the same way it links to the iPeng site. but a closer relationship than that is probalby not a good idea. -- Muele BR Mogens 2 Radios (1 battery), 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Squeezeplay. Re: [slim] Synced Players
I often sync my two Recievers and Radio. I have one spot where I can hear all three players. I cannot hear any delay or echo, ever. During the last year or so I have an issue once. The radio what ~ ½ second out of sync. It was so from the beginning and two presses on pause solved it. However they way you set up the sync from either an IR remote or a Controller is Less than optimal. If you have more than two players and want to switch sync on and off at a regular basis you simply *must* look at third party plugins or even thirdparty hardware (iPhone or other smartphone). Which is fair enough given the Slim-design-philosophy. Logitech provides the core functionality and if you want something more fancy, look for 3rd party software. Re: [slim] SlimCtrl 1.3 out now
Thank you. I have tried 1.33 a bit. The timeout issue in albums has been solved. But there are some issues. It still shows the artist, when it's Various artists. It never loads the artist at a later time. I hade the impression that it would load that infomation later just like the album artwork. Year is load loaded at all. (I don't care much about that) New music is still using the old query and times out. The album-list in artist X still times out. All tracks from artist X also times out after approx. 180 tracks. I don't understand the need for a 10 second timeout for the indexing. As long as I can see the counter going up, I'm content. And it's only on the first listing. Subsequently the lists are there instantly Idea: Make indexing start in the background as soon as SlimCtrl starts. Or make it possible to trigger a reindexing without timeout from the settings-pane. Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience
I guess it depends very much on how many live and use the system. We are 5 in the household of which 3 are old enough to be using the system actively. Usually nothing is synced and noone but me has been able to manage sync. When I'm home alone I like to sync everything and listen to music at a decent level across the house. I normally keep one controller with me in that usecase. I don't sync volume. But being able to do so would be really great. The way it's done on Sonos (as far as I know at least) is that there is a master slider and individual sliders for each player. Great interface for a touch-device. But how can something similar be achieved on the button'n'knob interface? -- Muele BR Mogens 1 Radio, 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Squeezeplay. Served by an old 800 mhz IBM T21 Thinkpad. And thereby I introduce a third version of yours two possibilities where you first choose the player you want to sync with another. I think thats a pretty good idea. Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience
So basically what is requested is something like The Synchronizer plugin. I have now installed it. It works, gets the job done. I will now replace SB's own sync on my main menu. But I really think it should be core functionality. Sync is a main differentiator and shouldn't rely on users fiddling about with third party stuff, let alone the less advanced users that are never going to install plugins that are not part of the core. Also I think it should be posible to administrate on the device as well as the web-ui. Is this all that is need to get the Sync-experience up to level? (Besides the technical issues some still experience.) What about semi-attached volume control. How can that be managed on a non-touch device? Re: [slim] Boom or Radio for childrens room
For preschool operation album art is the killer feature that should make you choose the Radio IMO. If you can get a combo of plugins to allow all albums of genre:Children be shown by the click of a preset-button, the kid can choose his music based on the way the album cover looks like. I know my 3½ year old knows lots of albums by the look of the cover. By the way, if you get that working, please post the method here. [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience
The squeezebox system always gets bashed for it's poor user interface when it comes to managing synchronisation. Can we as a community come up with some good ideas that can the developers can use to improve on this? Could we as a community come up with constructive ideas how the developers can improve it? Not so much on the touch. They can get plenty of inspiration from iPeng, Sonos, Slimcontrol etc. But for the spinning-wheel/knob devices, Radio and controller. Maybe also leave out the VFD based devices as their limited visualization makes it hard to do the massive improvement that is needed. I don't own one, so I may be wrong. But my own focus will be on squeezeplay devices with a wheel/knob. I will start out with a couple of ideas: 1. Let users define sync-groups that the system remembers. I.e. which players are in the group and which playlist should take over. 2. Easier stopping of multi-sync. If I e.g. sync 3 devices I need to switch between players to get the players to play individually. The party has finished, I just want to kill all sync with one click. -- Muele BR Mogens 1 Radio, 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Squeezeplay. Served by an old 800 mhz IBM T21 Thinkpad.
