Did Logitech pull the plug?

I didn't notice. I'm happily running 7.7.2 without any issues at all.

Of course I'm kidding, I did know that Logitech pulled the plug. But
except for devices only being available second hand, there really is no
difference. Says something about how poorly Logitech did handle things.

I have no involvement in this project (But I think it's exiting), so my
vote doesn't really count.

But I think Jubarend's work is really good. I caught the cassette
reference right away. It works well both in the small and big versions.
Looks friendly. Has both the musical reference of the cassette and the
passion of the heart.

Maybe if the cassette included a couple of black dots in the top where
the little holes are suppoed to be, the reference would be more obvious.
If people don't like the orange, maybe tone it a little more greyish?

Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'

2011-11-15 Thread Muele

Mediamonkey and the Squeeze-ecosystem obviously fill two different
needs.

The one thing were they can easily be compared is the scanning. And MM
is far ahead. Both in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and fault
tolerance. Logitech could learn from that.

Btw I'm very pleased to here that Logitech is devoted to Squeezebox.
Lets just hope it is not too late and they have a (couple of) new
model(s) up their sleeve, so they have something new and shiny to focus
their (renewed?)marketing around.

Btw, what's up with the Touch/Radio placement in all their powerpoints
and marketing? Radio everywhere, Touch nowhere. I do realize the Radio
is very important and sells well, but it seems they are trying to hide
the touch away.

If you ask me: Yes, we are at the end.

Now that the Revue and Squeezebox are getting fused together via
Squeezebox-server/LMS, Logitech will kill Squeeze the day that they
pull the plug on Revue. And that day is just around the corner.

The only positive sign I see is that the few software developers still
left are still working hard.

But hey, the squeezeboxes still work, and will do long time after
Logitech stops supporting them.

I don't think SBS was playing, but it's hard to know exactly happened. I
miss both the tools and skills to analyse it.
Probably a reboot of the pc could have solved it.

Two small things: It is really hard to find the PDF and that is crucial
in getting it to work. Try to flash it directly in the user's face. Put
it on the desktop, provide a button in the config window. Whatever
makes sense.

The other is that what you call Squeezeplayer is actually called
Squeezeplay. Squeezeplayer is an app for Android.

Actually there is nothing keeping me from buying more squeezeboxes

It's really cool and I will use it. At least when adding batches of

One suggestion: In the MonkeySqueeze tab of tools-options you could add
a test server-button.

The instructions works, but if it is possible to make an automatic

Re: [slim] So, what exactly is the future of streaming audio going to be?

2011-08-04 Thread Muele

I think the initial question has been answered pretty good. So I will
continue the slightly off topic comparison between Sonos and SB.

I think one of the biggest differences is that Sonos is pretty much
plug'n'play that just works out of the box for most people. You can
hardly say the same about Squeezeboxen.

On the negative side, Sonos has a limit on the size of the library
supported. Around 65.000 tracks, depending on how they're tagged.

I must say it is not getting any easier to recommend SB over Sonos
especially now that they released the small (and almost affordable)
Play:3. Still SB is more affordable and flexible. But at what cost?

Other than that I think Erlands comparison sums it up pretty well.

Edit: Just came to think on one very important missing feature of
Sonos: New music Bummer.

Question: Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

- Its excellent audio quality
- Best price/performance on the market
- Excellent hardware/software quality of the whole solution
- Great support for online streaming services
- Great support for browsing and playing local music
- The possiblity to extend it to multiple rooms later on
- Its support for third party plugins
- The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new
  features/bugs
- This community and forum
- I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone

One killer feature for me is local control: Touch-screen,
hardwarebuttons, IR remote. To some degree even the controller.
Basically you can do stuff on the SBs without fidling around with an
app on your smartphone/tablet.

Yes I use Squeezecommander most of the time, but for just putting on a
radio in the kitchen or bedroom, nothing beats the preset-buttons.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: Why do you continue to use Squeezebox ?

- I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox system, why change something that
  works good ?
- I have already invested too much in Squeezebox devices, would cost
  too much to switch
- I have just purchased a new Squeezebox and won't switch to
  something else anytime soon
- I love the 3rd party plugin/app model and would only switch to
  something else that supports this
- I would consider switching if someone offered something with
  similar functionality
- I have already started to look for something else but haven't found
  anything interesting yet
- I have already started or completed the transition to something
  else

Besides local control that I mention in the other thread, one thing is
really great for me:

It solves (or at least is part of the solution to) ALL of my music
needs. Hmmm.. come to think of it, the cars are the exeption (so far).

Music in just about every room at home. Outside when needed,
batterypowered. Remotely: on work on I stream to my pc with
softsqueeze. On camping earlier this summer I brought a Radio and
enabled the wifi-access point on my phone, and BAM all my music
available. I can stream to my phone, but mostly I just use
Squeezecommander to download the albums I want to listen to via Wifi
before leaving. If my local neighbourghood had better mobile coverage I
probalby wouldn't bother downloading it but just stream.

I sincerely believe there exists no alternative that can do all this.

I know Sonos can't. Recently a Sonos-user on a Danish AV-site wanted to
stream his music while on vacation. He ended up enabling SBS on his NAS
and accessing it remotely with iPeng for iPad. I think he was pretty
happy about it.

Regarding space: E.g Squeezecommander is about 3 MB, so it is one of
the bigger apps. But even on the tiny X10 mini space is not an issue.
Whatever space the cache uses, can be put on the SD card if needed.

The current release version of SqueezeCommander is only ~1MB big.
The Beta is much bigger (~3MB) because I now include optimized bitmaps

But you are right, you can move SqueezeCommander (the App itself) to SD

SqueezeCommander stores its (artwork) cache in

How about a 1x2, 2x2 or 3x3 layout for low resolution devices/fat

Re: [slim] Possibility to build dedicated controller based on Android?

2011-04-11 Thread Muele

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86926

Question: Dedicated controller necessary?

- Go on, just buy a Sonos then!
- Are the two extra clicks really that bad?
- The original Controller works well!
- Yes, such a controller would be the icing on the cake!

Go on, just buy a Sonos then!
You could do that, but you would probably miss the flexibility
Squeezebox gives over Sonos.

Are the two extra clicks really that bad?
In squeezecommander you can set the phone to keep the screen on=0
clicks (will cost some battery-time) or diable the lock-mechnanism = 1
click.

The original Controller works well!
You can do some things to improve the controller, e.g. disable the
powersaving features. And there's a setting somewhere to allow you to
scroll one letter at a time instead of one album/artist at a time.

Yes, such a controller would be the icing on the cake!
Sure, if it came from Logitech, maybe it would generate a few extra
sales but probably not enough to justify the effort. For existing
customers I think aftersales of such a controller would be close to 0.
Based on the expected pricetag of such a device, compared to what
alternatives are out there.

All in all I think there are plenty of existing choices. Posting a
thread like this could perhaps inspire some of the 3rd party
app-developers to add the functionality you are missing. As I see it
there are two issues: Keep the users from exiting the app by mistake,
and allow the screen to shut off and be awakened by the accelerometer.
For an existing app, the extra development could be worth the effort.
(Third issue is ofcourse setup of the Receiver, but there are also 3rd
party solutions for that)

Take a look at what options there already are for iThings and Android,
and I'm sure you'll find something with a satisfactory FAF (Family
acceptance factor).

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

2011-03-22 Thread Muele

At first, when I saw the announcement, I thought uh thats a shame for
Flatterman and the developer of SqueezeControl. Now they will have a
hard time getting a return for their time and effort.

But now I have tried it on both a HTC Desire and a SE XPmini. And it
cannnot compete with SqueezeCommander. IT doesn't run smooth at all,
scrolling requires care to do it just right, scrolling stutters on both
devices, Sync-handling doesn't benefit from the touch screen at all. But
the real showstopper for me is that you cannot connect to your home
server across the internet. That is my usecase 95% of the time. I
cannot be bothered to turn on wifi just to access my music when at
home, and when at work, it is ofcourse not an option.

But I think it is a good thing that Logitech have released an
Android-port of squeezeplay. And I'm sure it will be developed further.
Seems kind of the obvious thing to do. Squeezeboxes run some flavour of
Linux and Android is another flavour of linux, so it should be a small
deal porting it. Obviously it wasn't.

I think Logitech will sell some devices for having an
in-house-supported controller-app. And I think Flatterman will sell
some SqueezeCommanders because it is better :-)

And this inspires some amount of confidence in the future of the
productline.

Re: [slim] Stream music from squeezebox server to smartphone

Try connecting any netradio player to server:9000/stream.mp3. You can
now select a device called mozilla-something (or maybe other
browsername?)

It will play, but with considerable delay due to the way stream.mp3
buffers on the device.

If you need playback and cannot live with the delay of stream.mp3 there
is no other choice than iPhone.

I _think_ playback in Squeezecommander for Android is under
development. But it is not there yet.

Re: [slim] Time for a speculation thread...

2011-03-01 Thread Muele

I think we have covered what devices might or might not appear.

What do you think Logitech should do to keep the product alive and
profitable?

I think we need to realize that in order for the Squeeze-product-line
to give us audio-pleasure, it needs to prosper. And mass market is
where the money is for a company like Logitech. If the line prospers,
there can be ressources for good sound quality and advanced features.

To me there are three important things:
1. Make it work as stand alone player. The touch has a server built in.
But it's hardly good enough. It should also support files that are on
the network as well as directly attached. Having to have a
server/(Powerfull-)NAS/PC of some sort running to listen to music keeps
a lot of people away. Streaming services ofcourse help this a lot.
2. Make it easy to set up. Setting up a wired stand alone Touch should
be no more difficult than setting up a SONOS.
3. UPNP. Make a great, free UPNP server. People will install it and
eventually realize that native Squeeze-products will give them more
than the stock UPNE-ones.
4. Marketing. Sell the damn stuff. Its actually good products.
Afordable whole house audio ranging from cheap bathroom quality audio
to audiophile quality-gear. That is unique. But Logitech chooses to
just show a boring list of anonomous porducts on their website.
5. If the Touch cannot support the server decently, sell a server.
Something like squeezeplug. Plug it in: network, usb-disk and power,
ready to go. Logitech-branded!! Easy way to point to a network share is
of course also mandatory, but it adds to the geekyness. Plug and play is
the way to go.

Ok, that was more than three ;)

Someone could also suggest that this i a good time for Logitech to sell
off the productline to some other company to develop it further. But to
who, and what direction should they take it?

Re: [slim] Time for a speculation thread...

2011-02-28 Thread Muele

I think they should put their money on UPNP/DNLA support on the
serverside.
And make the Touch support network-drives, with just the DB stored on
usb/memorycard.

Regarding new models, there must be something coming up pretty soon or
there never will IMHO.

If we look back at the rate of release of new products. The next
product has always been well under development when a product was
released.(Edit: at least as far back as I know the history og Squeeze.)
The Touch was greatly delayed, so the HW developers has had lots of time
finishing their part of the new product(s). I haven't really been
following beta lately, so I have no idea what big issues could keep the
new product(s) from appearing (if software is the reason for them not to
have been released yet).

I agree with those that think The Boom is next in line to be replaced.
However, then what about the work being done on Onebrowser? wouldn't
that generally be wasted? Sorry if I overlook something important in
Onebrowser. As mentioned I haven't been following beta since 7.5.0 or
7.5.1

I personally would like to see a touch with amplifier capabilities and
OEM licensing.

Re: [slim] Wonder why I can't connect remotely

2010-11-12 Thread Muele

Hooray, I got it to work finally.

I suspect it was a combination of different things. I think the router
was the problem at some point. After fidling around for some time, I
sort of got through. but not really.

The next problem was squeezeplay. (I had long stopped playing around
with the Radio) It was a really old build and turned out to be stuck on
a long-gone server, even though it allowed me to enter the IP of the
remote server.

Now all that remains is to see if the company firewall allows me
through. I think it does.

Thanks for all input.

Ps. I currently sit listening to Volbeat, synced on two radios, one on
my new home network, and the other on the old internet connection. The
delay is almost unnoticeable and could probably be tweaked away
entirely.

[slim] Wonder why I can't connect remotely

2010-11-11 Thread Muele

I can't connect my player to my squeezebox server across the web.

I have set up port forwarding of ports 9000, 9090 (shouldn't be
necessary, actually) and 3483 in the router.

I can connect remotely with Squeezecommander on my phone. And with my
webbrowser (http::9000) and ...:9000/stream.mp3 on the pc.

But I cannot get any squeezebox player to connect. I have tried with a
Radio, Softsqueeze and Squeezeplay.

I guess the difference is port 3483, but that is also forwarded (both
protocols)

Any ideas what can be wrong?

For me, a very simple partymode would suffice: Change behavior of

should be just a little more advanced, have the Play now do a [play

That would do it for 99% of all mistakes done.

[slim] I want partymode

2010-10-31 Thread Muele

Yesterday evening we held a party and as usual squeeze is a great
success. Except for the five or seven times our ad-hoc-built playlist
was wiped despite me vigorously explaining how to use the more
button.

I hate touch-to-play. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.

Please bring back partymode.

Re: [slim] Touch - exclusive to Logitech website?

Mnyb;569710 Wrote:
Can the exclusive ploy be a way to not run out of them, before the

My guess is that you are spot on! This way Logitech can run out of
stock without having to admit it to the retailers and at the same time
perhaps preserve stock a bit longer. Better hurry out and buy now if
you want a Touch.

As for Amazon etc dumping the price. I really don't think Logitech
minds that. The gross price is set so that Logitech can cover hardware
and support and still have some profit. The more devices that are
pushed to the consumer the better for the business.

I think I have stated it before in another thread. But I think
Logitech's main problem in relation to the Squeezebox product line, is
that it is so different in comparison to most of their other product
lines. If they are unable to supply mouse X, they still have 10 other
mouse-models that are apealing to the same customers. Hence they don't
care too much about having enough stock and order product-runs in due
time. If the Touch and Receiver goes out of stock on the other hand,
they are pretty much out of business until new stock is produced. I
think management at some level has not realised that yet.

I have two problems:
1. from the Logitech.dk/com site I am unable to find these forums. At
some point (a few months ago) I found another squeezebox forum.
Probably it was just a subforum under logitech's main forum. But I'm
not even able to browse to that now. The link may exist, but I can find
it, even when I know what I am looking for.

2. I can't find the beta software. Going through logitechsqueezebox.com
you can through a step where you could go to the beta-stuff, including
changelog etc. That step is not there when coming through
logitech.dk/com

Re: [slim] What If Logitech Partnered with VortexBox?

2010-04-23 Thread Muele

Hehe

All this talk about the Vortexbox appliance makes me wonder if I should
buy one...

I installed the image on a laptop and it worked like a charm. But my
music is currently on a usb-disk, and that made the vortexbox so
not-an-appliance-at-all that I ended up quitting and going back to the
win-xp installation I had before (actually a fresh install, but
whatever...)

But I'm sure it's another story when running as it's supposed to. And
at less than 400$ it's probably close to unbeatable.

And yes, Logitech should definately link to Vortexbox.org the same way
it links to the iPeng site. but a closer relationship than that is
probalby not a good idea.

Re: [slim] Synced Players

2010-03-12 Thread Muele

I often sync my two Recievers and Radio.

I have one spot where I can hear all three players. I cannot hear any
delay or echo, ever.

During the last year or so I have an issue once. The radio what ~ ½
second out of sync. It was so from the beginning and two presses on
pause solved it.

However they way you set up the sync from either an IR remote or a
Controller is Less than optimal. If you have more than two players and
want to switch sync on and off at a regular basis you simply *must* look
at third party plugins or even thirdparty hardware (iPhone or other
smartphone).
Which is fair enough given the Slim-design-philosophy. Logitech
provides the core functionality and if you want something more fancy,
look for 3rd party software. (3rd party plugins that I know are worth
looking at: OtherPlayers and the Synchronizer)

https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15848
has already been killed as a duplicate of
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6806
A bug from January 2008 with status Future. EDIT. I think that is a
shame, since some new ideas came up in the thread, which are not in the
old bug.

and
Bug 15850 - Improve synchronization user experience #8211; Alarm
handling
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15850
Marked duplicate of
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8593 which is Status
Wontfix. I guess I knew that would happen, but I filed the request
anyway out of loyality to the forum-thread

Apparently Logitech thinks this part of the UI is best left to 3rd
party devs to cope with.

Anyway: going through this exercise showed me the way to a plugin, The
Synchronizer, which basically solves my needs for Sync-UI although it
could be done both more pretty and intuitive. Thanks to Eric Koldinger
for writing it.

I wont bother adding to the old request as it is already overloaded

that I think it matters. Its a 25 months old bug with no assignee...

Anyway with The Synchronizer and SlimCtrl for my phone I have the

Re: [slim] SlimCtrl 1.3 out now

2010-03-05 Thread Muele

Thank you.
I have tried 1.33 a bit.

The timeout issue in albums has been solved.

But there are some issues.

It still shows the artist, when it's Various artists.

It never loads the artist at a later time. I hade the impression that
it would load that infomation later just like the album artwork.

Year is load loaded at all. (I don't care much about that)

New music is still using the old query and times out.

The album-list in artist X still times out.

All tracks from artist X also times out after approx. 180 tracks.

I don't understand the need for a 10 second timeout for the indexing.
As long as I can see the counter going up, I'm content. And it's only on
the first listing. Subsequently the lists are there instantly

Idea: Make indexing start in the background as soon as SlimCtrl starts.
Or make it possible to trigger a reindexing without timeout from the
settings-pane.

I think it's performing fully acceptable on the SBC and Radio almost all

What about a 50.000 track collection running on a decent server? Will

Re: [slim] SlimCtrl 1.3 out now

2010-03-03 Thread Muele

Locuth;522088 Wrote:
I'll check the all tracks query for performance too.

Maybe I can collect the album artist information incrementally.

 Like so:
When the complete album list is loaded (initially) I'll skip the
 artist information.
And when individual albums or groups of albums (artist-query) are
 loaded at a later time,
I query the artist information along and add it to the complete album
 list.

As it is now, your NAS cannot deliver 20 albums in 10 seconds
 (timeout).

Thats unacceptable for a complete list of e.g. 500 albums (=4 minutes)
But it might be permissable for 10 albums of a single artist.

Well, it's not exactly a NAS. In some respects it's even worse ;) A
slow pc with limited ram (384mb) with the data on a usb 1.1 device. But
it actually performs resonably well (good enough that I wont cash out
for a new one until I know if the touch will satisfy my needs).

I think i will try enabling the SB server on the desktop pc at home and
connect to that to see how performance compares. Still not a state of
the art machine, but comparable to a typical netbook.

For load-comparison, the largest artist in my library has 21 albums,
which loads flawlessly every time.

Ps, you should get to bed earlier :)

There is also the SlimCtrl for Windows Mobile phones.

I have no idea how it compares to the other apps for smartphones. But
it beats the crap out of the browserinterface. http://sc.sciatec.de/

The browserinterface is nice for letting your guests access the
squeezeboxes. They get quite impressed by that. But for everyday use,
its not really an alternative IMO.

Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience

I guess it depends very much on how many live and use the system.

We are 5 in the household of which 3 are old enough to be using the
system actively.

Usually nothing is synced and noone but me has been able to manage
sync.

When I'm home alone I like to sync everything and listen to music at a
decent level across the house. I normally keep one controller with me in
that usecase. I don't sync volume. But being able to do so would be
really great.
The way it's done on Sonos (as far as I know at least) is that there is
a master slider and individual sliders for each player. Great interface
for a touch-device.

But how can something similar be achieved on the button'n'knob
interface?

Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience

So basically what is requested is something like The Synchronizer
plugin.
I have now installed it. It works, gets the job done. I will now
replace SB's own sync on my main menu. But I really think it should be
core functionality. Sync is a main differentiator and shouldn't rely on
users fiddling about with third party stuff, let alone the less advanced
users that are never going to install plugins that are not part of the
core.

Also I think it should be posible to administrate on the device as well
as the web-ui.

Is this all that is need to get the Sync-experience up to level?
(Besides the technical issues some still experience.)

What about semi-attached volume control. How can that be managed on a
non-touch device?

Other stuff?

[slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience

2010-02-17 Thread Muele

The squeezebox system always gets bashed for it's poor user interface
when it comes to managing synchronisation.

Can we as a community come up with some good ideas that can the
developers can use to improve on this?

Could we as a community come up with constructive ideas how the
developers can improve it?
Not so much on the touch. They can get plenty of inspiration from
iPeng, Sonos, Slimcontrol etc. But for the spinning-wheel/knob devices,
Radio and controller. Maybe also leave out the VFD based devices as
their limited visualization makes it hard to do the massive improvement
that is needed. I don't own one, so I may be wrong. But my own focus
will be on squeezeplay devices with a wheel/knob.

I will start out with a couple of ideas:

1. Let users define sync-groups that the system remembers. I.e. which
players are in the group and which playlist should take over.

2. Easier stopping of multi-sync. If I e.g. sync 3 devices I need to
switch between players to get the players to play individually. The
party has finished, I just want to kill all sync with one click.
